Abstract

Symmetry analysis of textile patterns, which appear in the Patan Patola and Geringsing textiles produced by the double ikat technique in India and Indonesia, can provide information about the cultural relationship between ethnic groups. Symmetry is categorized into classes according to the Symmetry Group Theory. This article is based on a study in which eight textile samples were used: four Patan Patola textiles and four Geringsing textiles collected from an exhibition catalog. Each sample was examined based on the Symmetry Group Theory and divided into three class categories: point symmetry, one-dimensional, and two-dimensional classes. The results indicate high similarities among the symmetry classes of samples from these two ethnic groups, thereby suggesting that the patterns possess a common connection. Patan Patola and Geringsing textile patterns admitted pmm2 and d4in all samples, indicating intense interactions.

Abstract

Applying the theory of Bali Creative Art, this paper looks at the theatre directing elements, concept, and method applied by Leon Rubin when he directed Shakespeare’s Cymbeline. Invited by the Head of the Bali Province Cultural Directorate to showcase a cross-cultural theatrical production, Leon selected and integrated twenty-five artists (actors/actresses, costume and lighting designers) from Bali, Indonesia; Malaysia, Mexico, Brazil, China, and England in a new work for the 38th Bali Arts Festival in 2016. Most of the actors were able to stay in Bali for three weeks to rehearse; the piece was also shown in limited seating venues in the villages of Ubud and Abian Semal for three nights in a row from 25 to 27 June 2016. Despite the great challenge for the non-Indonesian actors and director, all were finally able to collaborate under Leon’s direction and perform the Indonesian language translation of the original Shakespearian text. Although the local artists informed Leon that the Cymbeline play would be competing with sounds from loud speakers in several nearby performance venues and the stage crew offered the actors microphones—Leon did not allow sound amplification of the actors, musicians, narrator, or the singer. Surprising yet amusing local audiences with several uncommon features, the Cymbeline show was considered to be the best collaborative production among the nearly 350 performances presented during the month-long festival.

Abstract

This article presents the process of commencing inter-cultural interactions and artistic collaboration between Balinese and western photographers through photography. In the beginning, the photography project only showed visual record of the Kings, the royal family along with the royal government apparatus in Bali. Beginning with Gregor Krause, a colonial doctor who practiced photography, the others photographers then began exploring nature, culture, art and Balinese society into recording their photographic works. The activity then continued to be an artistic collaboration between westerners as photographers and Balinese as photo models. Not only that, the collaboration also extends to the incorporation of many western cultural elements into photography properties. In addition, the models that appear in photographic works are not only from the royal community, but begin to spread to ordinary residents, artists and their environment. Through the bridge of photography, many western artists combine their ideas with Balinese artists to design and create works of art in the needs of photographic documentation. The collaborative work then attracted tourists to Bali to enjoy the exotica of Bali which was first collaborated by western photographers and writers.
