ELITE: English and Literature Journal (Print ISSN: 2355-0821, Online ISSN: 2580-5215) is a peer-reviewed journal devoted specifically to the studies of English linguistics and literature and other literatures with a special emphasis on local culture, wisdom, philosophy and identity. Published twice a year in June and December, the first edition of ELITE was published in 2013. The journal contents are managed by the English and Literature Department, Faculty of Adab and Humanities, Alauddin State Islamic University of Makassar, Indonesia. The primary objective of the journal is to provide a productive forum for lecturers, researchers, authors, graduate students, and practitioners to present results of their recent studies in the areas of English linguistics and literature and other literary traditions. The journal is also intended to help disseminate recent developments in theories, concepts, and ideas in the areas concerned to the academic community of language and literature studies in Indonesia in particular and worldwide in general.

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to find and to compare (similarities and differences)  values of character Education in literary works those are Falsafah Hidup by Hamka and The Prophet by Khalil Gibran. This study reveals values of character education beyond a literary work in order to give contribution to build human character. This study also gives information that literary work is not only display a beautiful string of word but it contains life  meaning, so literary work can be an alternative source for building human character. This study uses content analysis technique and comparative approach with coding sheet as the instrument.Falsafah Hidupand The Prophet as object of study. Data analysis starts from preparing data, defining unit of analysis, building coding sheet, coding, comparing, making conclusion, and reporting. Result of study shows there are 13 values of char4acter education in Falsafah Hidupand 11 values of character education in The Prophet. There are some same and different in value and both of these works focus on humanistic and social value. But some values in Falsafah Hidup are not found in The Prophet. The value is character toward nation. Values of character education in The Prophet are not refer to certain religion or faith. Differ than Falsafah Hidup, the values always relies on Al Qur’an and Hadits.Abstrak Nilai Pendidikan Karakter pada Karya Sastra. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memperoleh dan membandingkan nilai pendidikan karakter pada karya sastra Falsafah Hidup oleh Hamka dan The Prophet oleh Khalil Gibran. Penelitian ini dapat memberikan kontribusi pada pembentukan karakter manusia serta memberikan pengetahuan bahwa karya sastra bukan hanya menampilkan rangkaian kata-kata indah, namun juga makna hidup. Dengan demikian, karya sastra juga berfungsi untuk membangun karakter manusia. Penelitian ini menggunakan, teknik analisis isi dan pendekatan komparatif dengan lembar pengkodean sebagai instrumennya. Falsafah Hidup dan The Prophet sebagai objek penelitian dimana analisis data dimulai dari mempersiapkan data, mendefinisikan, membuat lembar pengkodean, pengkodean, membandingkan, membuat kesimpulan, dan pelaporan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan ada 13 nilai-nilai pendidikan karakter di Falsafah Hidup dan 11 nilai-nilai pendidikan karakter dalam The Prophet. Kedua karya ini fokus pada nilai humanistik dan sosial, tapi beberapa nilai dalam falsafah Hidup tidak ditemukan dalam The Prophet, yaitu nilai karakter bangsa. Nilai-nilai pendidikan karakter dalam The Prophet tidak mengacu pada agama atau kepercayaan tertentu. Berbeda dari Falsafah Hidup yang nilai-nilainya selalu bergantung pada Al Qur'an dan Hadits.

Abstract

Abstract In EFL learning, among all the skills: listening, reading, and writing, speaking seems to be one of the most important skills. However, to master speaking is not an easy thing. And as a matter of fact, there are still many learners who have learned English for some years have not been able to speak fluently. Brown (2007) states that the difficulties the learners find in speaking are due to the fact that they have to focus on forms and function of the language. Further, Ellis (1994) also states that speaking has two sequential phases: planning and execution. Planning is done when speakers think of what utterance to produce to impact the listeners and execution is the realization of planning into words, phrases and sentences. To cope with the difficulties in speaking and to speak fluently, learners need to understand well about Communication Strategies. Thus, this paper tries to share ideas on the importance of the use of Communication Strategies to improve EFL learners’ speaking skill.  It includes the nature of speaking, learners’ proficiency, communicative competence, communication strategies, and the research supports on Communication strategies. Strategi Komunikasi dalam Bercakap pada Pembelajar Bahasa Inggris sebagai Bahasa Asing. Dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing, diantara semua keterampilan menyimak, membaca, menulis, dan bercakap; kemampuan bercakap merupakan salah satu kemampuan yang terpenting. Namun demikian, bukan hal yang mudah untuk menguasai kemampuan ini. Beberapa fakta memperlihatkan bahwa banyak pembelajar bahasa Inggris yang telah belajar selama beberapa tahun namun belum dapat bercakap lancar. Brown (2007) menyatakan bahwa kesulitan yang ditemukan oleh pembelajar dalam bercakap adalah dimana mereka harus fokus pada bentuk dan fungsi bahasa. Lebih lanjut, Ellis (1994) juga mengemukakan bahwa terdapat dua langkah berkelanjutan dalam bercakap, yaitu perencanaan dan eksekusi. Perencanaan dilakukan saat pembicara berpikir ujaran apa yang harus diucapkan untuk memberikan dampak pada pendengar, dan eksekusi adalah realisasi perencanaan dalam kata-kata, frase dan kalimat. Untuk mengatasi kesulitan dalam bercakap lancar, pembelajar harus memahami tentang strategi komunikasi. Olehkarenanya, tulisan ini mencoba untuk berbagi ide tentang pentingnya penggunaan Strategi Komunikasi untuk meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara pembelajar bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing. Strategi ini termasuk sifat berbicara, kemampuan peserta didik, kompetensi komunikatif, strategi komunikasi.

Abstract

AbstractThis research analyzed the perception of Makassar’s teenagers toward Korean drama and music and their influences to them. Interviews and digital recorder were provided as instruments of the research to ten respondents who are members of Makassar Korean Lover Community. Then, in analyzing data the researchers used descriptive qualitative method that aimed to get deep information about Korean wave in Makassar. The Results of the study found that Makassar’s teenagers put enormous interest in Korean culture especially Korean drama and music. However, most respondents also realize that the presence of Korean culture has a great negative impact to them and their environments. Korean culture itself gives effect in several aspects such as the influence on behavior, Influence on the taste and Influence on the environment as well. AbstrakPersepsi Remaja Makassar terhadap Drama dan Musik Korea (Studi Kasus pada Komunitas Pecinta Korea di Makassar). Penelitian ini mengkaji persepsi remaja di kota Makassar terhadap drama dan musik Korea serta pengaruhnya terhadap remaja tersebut. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah interview melalui alat perekam kepada (10) sepuluh responden yang tergabung dalam Komunitas Pencinta Korea kota Makassar. Dalam penelitian ini, digunakan metode deskrptif kualitatif yang bertujuan untuk memperoleh informasi lengkap tentang pengaruh budaya Korea di kota Makassar. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa remaja di Kota Makassar menaruh perhatian yang sangat besar terhadap budaya Korea khususnya drama dan musik Korea. Tetapi, hampir semua responden berpendapat bahwa kehadiran budaya Korea membawa dampak negatif terhadap mereka dan lingkungannya. Budaya Korea juga berpengaruh besar terhadap kebiasaan/tingkah laku remaja, kecenderungan menyukai dan menggunakan produk-produk Korea dan berpengaruh terhadap lingkungan remaja Makassar.

Abstract

Abstract The objectives of this research were to find out the kinds of polite expressions used  by  teachers  in  teaching  English  in  the  classroom  and  effects  of  polite expressions  used  by  teachers  to  students.  The researcher applied descriptive qualitative research and used purposive sampling in getting the data. The subject of this research was one English teacher of SMP 24 Makassar.  The researcher did classroom observation by recording the teacher’s activities and analyzed it through Brown  and  Levinson’s theory of politeness strategies. The researcher found  that  some  polite  expressions  of  strategies  that  the  teacher  used is divided  into  two  types.  First,  Positive  Politeness  (PP) such as  greetings, notice and attend the  hearer, exaggerate, intensify interest of hearer, use in-group identity makers, seeking agreement,  presuppose/  raise/  assert  common  ground,  include  both  speaker and  hearer  in  the  activity,  giving  or  asking  reasons,  assume  or  assert reciprocity and giving gifts to hearer (goods, sympathy); and Negative Politeness (NP)  such  as  Being conventionally indirect, Questions, Minimize the imposition, Giving deference, Apologize,  Nominalize.  The effects to students are:  being motivated in their study, student’s attitude (affective), respect to teacher, self-confidence, being active and attending in teaching learning process, and honest.Abstrak Ekspresi Kesopanan yang Digunakan oleh Guru dalam Mengajar Bahasa Inggris di Kelas. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui jenis ekspresi kesopanan yang digunakan oleh guru dalam mengajar bahasa Inggris di kelas dan efek dari ekspresi kesopanan yang digunakan oleh guru kepada siswa. Ini adalah penelitian deskriptif kualitatif yang menggunakan purposive sampling untuk mendapatkan data. Subjek penelitian ini adalah salah seorang guru Bahasa Inggris SMP 24 Makassar. Peneliti melakukan observasi kelas dengan merekam aktivitas guru dan dianalisis meggunakan teori strategi kesantunan Brown dan Levinson. Peneliti menemukan bahwa ekspresi kesopanan yang digunakan guru dibagi menjadi dua jenis. Pertama, Kesopanan Positif (KP) seperti salam, pemberitahuan dan menyapa pendengar, membesar-besarkan, mengintensifkan kepentingan pendengar, gunakan pembuat identitas dalam kelompok, mencari kesepakatan, mengandaikan / angkat / menegaskan, mengikutsertakan pembicara dan pendengar dalam kegiatan, memberi atau meminta alasan, mengasumsikan atau menegaskan timbal balik dan memberikan hadiah kepada pendengar (barang, simpati); dan kesopanan negatif (np) seperti menjadi konvensional tidak langsung, pertanyaan, minimalkan pembebanan, memberikan rasa hormat, minta maaf, nominalize. Efek untuk siswa: termotivasi dalam pelajaran mereka, sikap siswa (afektif), sehubungan dengan guru, kepercayaan diri, aktif dan menghadiri proses belajar mengajar, serta jujur.

Abstract

Abstract This research is about inter-cultural non-verbal communication strategies in Indonesian and Thailand students’ interaction which is included in the Kinesics of Novinger’s theory. The objectives of research are finding out the description of the kinds of non-verbal communication strategies used among students and the ways of non-verbal communication to the students. This research applies descriptive quantitative method. The research instruments are documentation and questionnaire. The data analysis showed that there were 39 kinds of non-verbal communication. There were 16 kinds of Gestures, 6 kinds of Eye Contact, 7 kinds of Facial Expressions, 6 kinds of Touch, and 4 kinds of Posture. The result of descriptive analysis showed the rate percentage of non-verbal communication strategies that have big roles in communication between Indonesian and Thailand students were 90% gesture and 10% eye contact. Abstract

Abstract In this article, the writer aimed to find out how the culture shapes character. The library research was used as the design of this study with the sources from personal and online library. The process of collecting the data is in many ways, the first was searching thesis and browsing some literatures. The other sources were books, articles and journals which have the same variable. Collecting and combining some theories was the last step. The result of this research is culture is one of many factors that influence a person's character. Culture affects perception, and perceptions drives behavior. Thus, the culture has a direct impact on our character. Moreover, our environment, which has cultural influences, shapes our character. AbstrakDalam artikel ini penulis bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana budaya membentuk karakter. Penelitian perpustakaan digunakan sebagai desain penelitian ini dengan sumber dari perpustakaan pribadi dan online. Proses pengumpulan data dalam banyak hal, yang pertama mencari tesis dan mecari beberapa literatur. Sumber lainnya adalah buku, artikel dan jurnal yang memiliki variabel yang sama. Mengumpulkan dan menggabungkan beberapa teori adalah langkah terakhir. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah Budaya adalah salah satu dari banyak faktor yang mempengaruhi karakter seseorang. Budaya mempengaruhi persepsi, dan persepsi mendorong perilaku. Dengan demikian, budaya memiliki dampak langsung pada karakter kita. Selain itu, lingkungan kita, yang memiliki pengaruh budaya, membentuk karakter kita.

Abstract

Abstract The Analysis of Syntactical Errors Made by the Students in Writing Thesis aimed to find out the types of syntactical errors made by the students in writing thesis and to find out the most frequent type of errors made by the students in writing thesis. The writer used Politzer and Romirez’s theory focusing on the Syntactical errors. This study found the errors made by students were in the term of noun phrase, verb, verb construction, and transformation. Then, the most frequent error found was in the noun phrase term with 48.7%. The researcher suggests the English teachers to give reinforcement for the students about the basic rules of constructing sentences.Abstrak Analisa Kesalahan Sintaksis oleh Mahasiswa dalam Penulisan Skripsi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memperoleh jenis kesalahan sintaksis yang dilakukan oleh siswa dalam menulis skripsi dan kesalahan sintaksis yang paling sering dilakukan. Penulis menggunakan teori Politzer dan Romirez mengenai kesalahan sintaksis. Hasil penelitian memperlihatkan bahwa kesalahan yang dilakukan mahasiswa adalah pada noun phrase, verb, verb construction, and transformation. Jenis kesalahan yang paling sering dilakukan adalah pada noun phrase (47.8%). Penulis menyarankan dosen bahasa Inggris untuk memberikan penguatan pada mahasiswa mengenai aturan dasar mengenai constructing sentences.

Abstract

Abstract This article aims to describe the types of illocutionary acts of main character in “Midnight in Paris” movie. It also aims to describe the type of illocutionary acts which is mostly used by the main character. It is a content analysis where the source of data is the “Midnight in Paris” movie directed by Woody Allen in 2011 which consisted of 245 utterances. The data are in the form of   main character’s 44 utterances and categorized into types of illocutionary acts based on Searle’s theory. Based on data analysis, the finding shows five types of illocutionary acts in main character’s utterances, namely assertive, directive, commissive, declarative and expressive. Assertive is mostly used by the main character. Key words: illocutionary acts, utterances, pragmatics, Midnight in Paris movie Abstrak Artikel ini bertujuan untuk memberikan gambaran tentang jenis-jenis tindak ilokusi dari tokoh utama dalam film “Midnight in Paris” yang disutradarai oleh Woody Allen pada tahun 2011. Artikel ini juga menggambarkan jenis tindak ilokusi yang palingt banyak digunakan oleh tokoh utama. Dengan menggunakan analisis isi,data yang berupa 44 ujaran yang diungkapkan oleh tokoh utama dikategorikan ke dalam jenis-jenis tindak ilokusi berdasarkan teori yang dikemukakan oleh Searle. Hasil analisis data menunjukkan bahwa terdapat lima jenis tindak ilokusi dari tokoh utama film tersebut, yaitu assertive, directive, commissive, declarative dan expressive. Assertive merupakan tindak ilokusi yang paling banyak digunakan oleh tokoh utama.  Kata kunci: tindak ilokusi, ujaran, pragmatic, film Midnight in Paris

Abstract

Abstract This writing studied about analysis of love in Two Kisses for Maddy novel by Matthew Logelin.  The aim of this study is to find out the kinds of love and meaning of love in “Two Kisses for Maddy” novel by Matthew Logelin. The writer used descriptive qualitative method and structuralism approach in analyzing the kinds of love and meaning of love in the novel. In this study, the instrument that used by the writer was note taking. From the result, the writer found out that there are four kinds of love that contain maternal love, thirteen kinds of love that contain paternal love and nine kinds of love that contain love between husband and wife. And then the writer found the meaning of love in the novel. The implication of this study is to inform the public that a novel is not only use full as a reading at leisure or entertainment, but the novel can also be functioning as knowledge of love. Hopefully, this thesis can contribute to education as an analysis of literary work, especially for students of English and Literature Department.Abstrak                                                                                                                         Analisa Cinta dalam Novel Karya Matthew Logelin “Two Kisses For Maddy”. Tulisan ini merupakan penelitian yang menganalisa cinta dalam novel “Two Kisses for Maddy” karya Matthew Logelin. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui jenis-jenis cinta dan makna cinta yang terkandung dalam novel “Two Kisses for Maddy” karya Matthew Logelin. Penulis menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif dengan pendekatan strukturalisme dalam menganalisa jenis-jenis cinta dan makna cinta yang terkandung dalam novel. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah note taking. Dari hasil analisa, penulis menemukan tiga jenis cinta, yaitu 4 data mengandung cinta ibu, 13 data mengandung cinta ayah, dan 9 data yang mengandung cinta antara suami istri. Dan kemudian terdapat makna yang terkandung pada masing-masing jenis cinta yang ditemukan. Tulisan ini diharapkan dapat menginformasikan kepada masyarakat bahwa novel bukan hanya digunakan sebagai bacaan waktu senggang, namun juga dapat berfungsi sebagai pemberi pengetahuan tentang segala hal termasuk tentang cinta. Kemudian juga diharapkan tulisan ini dapat member kontribusi pada pendidikan khususnya dalam menganalisa karya sastra, khususnya untuk mahasiswa jurusan Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris.

Abstract

Abstract This is a study which focuses on processes and affects of culture shock by main character in Lauren Kate’s novel “Torment” when she enters to new country through U-curve theory (the psychology of culture shock) by Collen Ward. The result shows that the phases of culture shock experienced by the main character are honeymoon, crisis, recovery and adjustment phase. There are two affects that is appeared through the phases of culture shock, they are the positive effects includes amazement, excitement, self confidence, good social interaction and life changes and negative effects including nervousness, fearness, confusion, feeling isolated and homesick.Abstrak Culture Shock pada Pemeran Utama dalam  Novel “Torment” karya Lauren Kate dengan Menggunakan Teori Psikologi Culture Shock oleh Collen Ward. Penelitian ini berfokus pada proses dan dampak dari culture shock yang dialami pemeran utama saat ia memasuki negara baru dalam novel “Torment” karya Lauren Kate. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori U-curve (psikologi culture shock) oleh Collen Ward. Hasil penelitian mengungkapkan bahwa tahapan culture shock yang dialami pemeran utama adalah tahap  honeymoon, crisis, recovery dan adjustment. Kemudian ada dua dampak yang dialami, yaitu dampak positif terdiri atas amazement, excitement, self confidence, good social interaction and life changes; dan dampak negatif yang terdiri dari  nervousness, fearness, confusion, feeling isolated dan homesick.
