Abstract

A recent natural disasters that gained extensive news coverage and public concern in Indonesia is the earthquake that occurred in Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara Province, in early August. Initially, local authorities stated that the earthquake on Lombok Island on 5 August 2018 was at an M 6.8 scale. However, the scale was later revised to M 7.0. This research used descriptive-qualitative case study method. Research result proved that the technological advances that have brought human civilisation to Industry 4.0 have a significant contribution to disaster mitigation. In the disaster that occurred in West Nusa Tenggara, researchers found that the government, disaster mitigation and recovery agencies, journalists, and the public used internet chat-based digital technology to conduct effective coordination. However, Industry 4.0 technology still has limitations in terms of disaster mitigation. Researchers suggest that the issues be addressed using industry 5.0, a technology based on the internet of things.

Abstract

Hashtag #GejayanMemanggil (Gejayan is Calling) became a trending topic on social media one day before the protest against several problematic laws, and the bills that were going to be passed. At that time, activists had successfully circulated the issues to the public through social media. As a result, at least 5000 protesters had joined in the protest in Yogyakarta. This phenomenon showed activeness of Indonesia’s civil society in the movement by involving digital media technologies. The author argued that social media allows the citizens, either communal or individual, to disseminate the issue and encourage others to join the protest in such short notice. This article aims to describe the role of social media and the impact of mobilisation through social media through the hashtag #GejayanMemanggil in the Yogyakarta movement. The qualitative method was employed to examine the phenomenon of the protests and to describe the role of social media. The data in this study was taken from online news, the official account of the movement, and blog posts. The results indicated that social media has the potential to trigger Indonesians to express their willingness and participate in activism.

Abstract

Breastfeeding coverage in Indonesia is under government target. Several works of literature illustrate that mothers in Indonesia face three classic problems. First, inadequate regulation to protect breastfeeding practices, second, the massive promotion of infant formula and breast-milk substitutes, and third, discrepancies in health services. This article aimed to explore the experiences of breastfeeding mothers and to relate it to broader discourse. The study was conducted in two metropolitan cities in Indonesia, Jakarta, and Surabaya. Both locations were chosen because the two cities share similar characteristics, namely urban communities with dense, heterogeneous populations and rapid changes. The study is a critical discourse analysis using the Foucauldian perspective to help examine the discourse and the social practices of breastfeeding. Data were collected with semi-structured interviews on 36 research subjects. The results confirmed that all subjects recognised the benefits of breastfeeding discourse. However, the practice of infant feeding was not always related to health recommendations. The study also found three issues concerning breastfeeding practice, namely: discourse on breastmilk and biopower, failed mothers, and mothers’ negotiation. The discourse on breastfeeding is recognised as a biopower discourse which is an extension of affected mothers’ identities. Mothers who fail to breastfeed feel guilt, frustration and shame. They tried to negotiate this condition by asking health workers for help and arguing that the identity of the mother is not only influenced by the practice of breastfeeding. Therefore, a constructive biopower discourse is needed to implement breastfeeding practices and discourses to normalise breastfeeding practices.

Abstract

Tanean Lanjhang (the long yard) is a large yard with traditional Madurese houses built in a row and facing each other. ‘Tanean’ means the distance between one house and another. Meanwhile, ‘Lanjhang’ is the area of the yard that extends along the Tanean. The group that inhabits the Tanean Lanjhang is a genealogical group from one lineage, usually from the maternal (matrilineal) line. These social phenomena happened in Sanatengah Village, Pasean District, Pamekasan Regency. The current research used descriptive qualitative methodology and studied the people of Sanatengah Village, Pasean Subdistrict, Pamekasan Regency and all its community components. The results of this study indicated that the Tanean Lanjhang community is a social order that maintains the influence of relatives in life. Communication between relatives exists because of the role of Pangaseppo, or the eldest person of the family; Oreng Toah (parents), or mother and father; and Taretan, or siblings. Those were the three relatives who have the highest position in Madurese society and must be obeyed by every household members. In maintaining kinship, marriage is also arranged within close relatives, such as between cousins, uncles, and nieces. This study concluded that the Tanean Lanjhang upholds the values of kinship. Furthermore, kinship is not only built based on traditional houses but also the tradition of marriage between close relatives.

Abstract

Radio is an audio medium used to fulfil the needs the audience's need, both for information and entertainment. Radio provides a variety of information content and a choice of music. Amid technological developments, the presence of many choices of media to access news, entertainment, music, and other information has become a challenge for radio broadcasting. Now people have various choices of media to get information and listen to music. This research aimed to look at the choice of media, especially radio, from the audience and find out what makes radio remains the audience's choice for information, entertainment and listening to music compared to other new media, including the reasons and motivations of audiences to listen to the radio. The results showed that audiences tended to prefer radio over other media because radio offered unique things, for example, the element of 'surprise' in selecting songs that give different sensations. In addition, the presence of radio broadcasters is also considered entertaining and can be a companion to the audience, especially when travelling. These results indicate that radio offers a uniqueness that cannot be found in other media, and the audience is free to choose the media based on their motivations, the greatest of which is listening to the radio for music, entertainment, and information.
