Abstract

This paper is a qualitaive case study regarding one of learning strategies in English as Foreign Language (EFL) writing, literally called “student’s diary”. The students’ diary can be defined as a brief narrative text created by students that might be a brief summary of what they have learnt, teachers’ feedback and evaluation, or even a general impression about their writing process. It aims to naturally encourage students to conduct a comprehensive reflection on their progress in EFL writing through “a diary” in each writing class they have. As what has been perceived among EFL scholars, the use of student’s diary is effective in enhanching student’s interest in writing and it can improve students’ writing as well. The participants of this study are 30 students of EFL classroom in the fourth semester at STKIP Muhammadiyah Bogor who have taken the various writing subjects in their previous semesters. The researcher tried to investigate how the typical of student’s diary for learning reflection is, how the real implementation of student’s diary is conducted in EFL learners’ learning process, and to what extent it can be effective related to the strengths and weaknesses involved in the implementation process. Advisory and suggestion on giving corrective feedback regarding linguistic aspects in students’ writing in the use of student’s diary as well is presented as the implication of this research for further related studies

Abstract

Communities with high literacy rates usually have low crime rates and high intelligence. This is precisely the responsibility of universities and schools in increasing reading interest and literacy skills in a country. From this context, it is hoped that the educational community will really apply it, especially in juxtaposing it with online learning and several applications. The purpose of this study was to collect information about the preferences of critical vocational students in their reading interests and reading skills. It is very useful to foster interest in reading and online learning to increase cultural values ​​and social literacy. The reading literacy development model used is the Plomp model: preliminary research, prototyping, and evaluation. The Evieta application, which is online learning belonging to the Vocational School of IPB University, is expected to fulfill these goals. Educators are expected to use related applications in their learning and lead reading and writing movements in schools. The results of the validation of teaching materials show that the Evieta IPB application is important and can be tested.

Abstract

Reading is one of the skills that should be improved by the students in learning English. The implementation of local wisdom based reading in this current research aimed to find out to what extent the effect of local wisdom based reading toward students’ reading comprehension at tenth grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Makassar. In this research, the researcher used experimental method with pre-experimental design. There were two kinds of test, namely pretest and posttest. Besides, the researcher administered the questionnaire to find out the students’ responds toward the effect of local wisdom based reading. The number of sample used in this research was 22 students. The result of this research shows that local wisdom based reading materials positively influenced the students’ reading comprehension. It is proved by the students’ mean score in pretest was 45.00 and posttest was 69.95. in addition, the result of the questionnaire shows that there were about 72.73% students give positive respond toward the material applied

Abstract

The objectives of research this research was to find out whether or not the CALL affects the students’ achievement and to find out the students’ attitude in learning English by using CALL. This research applied quasi-experimental method was used in this research by using non-equivalent control class design. The researcher chose and placed the experimental and control design randomly. The researcher took the first-year students of SMK Negeri 1 Pancarijang Kabupaten Sidrap in academic year 2019-2020 as a research subject. Based on the data found in this research, the researcher concludes that; 1) The use of CALL affected the achievement of the first year students of SMK Negeri 1 Pancarijang Kabupaten Sidrap in academic 2012/2013. It was proved by the mean score of pretest and posttest which was obtained from experimental class was 52.44 and 74.59. While the mean scores of pretest and posttest for the control class were 48.03 and 56.48. After analyzing using SPSS 22.0, the researcher found that (0.00<0.05) where the p-value (0.00) at the level of significance (0.05) and the degree of freedom 66. It indicated that the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted and, of course, the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. 2) The first-year students of SMK Negeri 1 Pancarijang Kabupaten Sidrap have a positive attitude in learning English through CALL. It was approved by the data that none of the student states negative statement to the use of CALL, 21 students (61.8%) was very favorable who get a score in interval 85-100 and 13 students (38.2%) were favorable in interval 69-84. From the data, the highest score of the students of the students is 100 which is categorized as very favorable, and the lowest score is 70 which is categorized favorable.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the extent to which processes and strategies can improve students' ability to write. In addition, this research is to determine students' ability to produce paragraphs. This type of research is classroom action research. The subjects consisted of 27 students who were class XI students of SMA 1 Gowa, a language program in the 2017/2018 academic year. The data of this study were collected using four types of instruments: observation sheets, field notes, portfolios, and the final composition of students in each cycle. The ability of students to write is analyzed using descriptive analysis and qualitative analysis. Descriptive analysis is used to analyze quantitative data consisting of percentages, averages, medians, modes, standard deviations, variants, frequencies, and tables. Qualitative analysis is used to analyze qualitative data which consists of the coding process of observations and field notes. The result shows that through process strategy, student’s writing ability can be improved, especially in writing paragraph.

Abstract

Supreme Court of the United States ruled that the American Constitution guarantee the same-sex marriage in 2015. It is the syllabus of Same-Sex Marriage in the United States that become the object of the research. This research aims to identify the engagement devices and examines how engagement system in the syllabus of same-sex marriage legal document of the United States that indicates the meaning and relation with the readers. The theory proposed by Martin and White of engagement system (2005) based on appraisal system is used to support the analysis. From the analysis, the researcher found there are 116 heteroglossic and 37 monoglossic types from 153 clauses. The presence of heteroglossic as the most type indicates that the petitioners not only made themselves as references or data sources, but also they tried to add many references and other brackets as data and facts that strengthen their statements. In addition, the presence of 'pronounce' type as the most type in heteroglossic as contract shows that the petitioners made many straightforward and assertive statements. These statements are representative of the assured feeling of the petitioners after seeing the fact that the same-sex marriage was discriminated. The presence of 'entertain' type as the most type in heteroglossic as expand shows us that the petitioners support same-sex marriages so that their rights can be recognized in the United States. Petitioners attest the ideals life of same-sex marriages who will be peaceful and prosperous like the hetero-sex marriages. Because they believe that marriage is fundamental right for all citizen.

Abstract

Abstract. This paper talks about the women’s character formed in the society of patriarchy system portrayed in the play of Romeo and Juliet,represented the England culturedepiction in the middle of 14th century and in the play of DatuMuseng and Maipa Deapati, represented the Bugis Culture Depiction of South Sulawesi in the end of 18th century. The aim of this paper is to describe the image of women in the eyes of society of two different places and different countries represented in the two differentplays. The writer used the analytical approach of the sociology study by using theory of Allan G Johnson and designed this paper as a descriptive qualitative method by collected data from several articles that related to the topic. The result shows thatin the patriarchy system, men were given privilege by the society, while the women just seen as a lowest class in the society. According to Allan G Johnson, there are four elements of patriarchy system: Male dominance, Male Identification, Male centeredness, and Male obsession with control. From this elements, we can see the position of women, where women must follow the father’s rule, women must marry with her father’s choice, and women don’t have any right to take decision. Abstract

The research objectives were to find out whether (or not) the use of Project Based Learning can improve the reading comprehension of the second grade students of SMK Muhammadiyah 4 Tallo Makassar, and to know whether (or not) the use of Project Based Learning Strategy can improve the reading interest of the second grade students of SMK Muhammadiyah 4 Tallo Makassar. This research applied quasi experimental design. The population of this research was the second year students of SMK Muhammadiyah 4 Tallo Makassar in academic year 2015/2016. This research used cluster random sampling. The sample of this research consisted of 72 students belonging two classes, 36 students in experimental group and 36 students in control group. The instrument of the research was used to collect the data in this research, those are reading comprehension test and questionnaire. The data were analyzed by using independent samples test and inferetial statistics on SPSS version 20.0. The result of posttest of experimental group is more significantly improved than the students’ result of posttest of control group by the students’ mean score 83.22. >77.83. The difference of both scores is statistically significant it is based on the t-test value at significant level 0.05 in which the probability value is lower than the significant level (0.00 < 0.05). the students’ precentage responses from questionnaire show 38.9% very high interest and 52.8% high interest, and 8.3% moderate and the mean score is 81.06. It means, the students are interested in learning reading comprehension by using Project Based Learning strategy.

Abstract

This article analyzed of the ambivalence of the main character in the novel The Mistress of Spices by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni by using post colonial theory from Bhabha concept that ambivalence, mimicry and hybridity. The purposes of this research were describing the cause of ambivalence by the main character and also to describe mimicry and hybridity potrayed by Tilo as the main character in Divakaruni’s The Mistress of Spices. The method of this research was descriptive qualitative methods to described the answer from the problem formulation. The source of the data of this research was the novel The Mistress of Spices by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni which was published in 1997 and consists of 15 chapters and 317 pages. And, the instrument of this research was note taking. The technique of data analysis of this research was linked to the theory, concept and method. The result found that the main character face the ambivalence because of her rules and love. Living in America is greatly influenced her on the new culture of imitating and hybridizing about American culture.

Abstract

Man and woman are created by God in equality position, but in many aspects of life, man reveals domination and discrimination to woman. The aim of the study is to investigate Helen Garner’s work, Monkey Grip (1977). The researcher focuses on the issue of feminism that exists in the novel. The researcher identifies feminism issues based on the two ways, they are behavior and language. Behavior of feminism includes the idea and the action. The idea means a wish or concept of the woman character to get freedom, then action is implementation of the idea. Language of feminism means how the woman expresses sexual desire in the novel. Moreover, this research uses sociological approach to see relation between the novel and society. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. The primary data are taken by the novel Monkey Grip by Helen Garner and secondary data are taken by some journals, books, and articles. From the research, the researcher found that the woman character could stand without a husband. The woman character who gets discrimination by a man can leave her special friend. Furthermore, the woman character in this story talks about sexual desire freely and openly. The author of this novel tries to argue that it is not taboo to talk about sexual desire in the novel anymore. The research also reveals relation between the author and the novel where the author brings her experiences in her life into the novel, such as unhappy marriage. Moreover, this research is a kind of liberal feminism. Liberal feminism believe that woman have to be independent woman in private and public sphere.
