Abstract

In the previous years, the students at the place where the present study was conducted were taught the English connected speech through drill. This used to bring about students’ poor attitudes and unsatisfactory achievement. This study was aimed at examining if selected songs would improve the students’ connected speech performance. Nonequivalent Control Group Design was used in this experimental study. It involved six intact groups of students attending Pronunciation course – three were randomly assigned to the experimental group and the remaining three assigned to the control group. Both groups were pre-tested. The results were equal. After 3 sessions of connected speech lesson both groups were tested again. The post-test results of these two groups were then compared to see if the sample means were significantly different. As the study also aimed to find out the students’ perception towards the teaching practice implemented, a questionnaire was employed. The t-test showed that the difference of the sample means was not significantly large. Nevertheless, based on the feedbacks that were elicited through the questionnaire, the use of songs for teaching the English connected speech seemed to remain promising. Overall, the study showed that the use of songs for teaching the English connected speech tended to indicate a prospective better learning outcome. As the experiment took only 3 sessions, the chance for such treatment to be effective is increased if period of study is extended.

Abstract

Integrating Islamic values in non-religion subjects at masdrasah has been crucial to do. This study outlines the teachers’ beliefs and practices on integrating Islamic values in English lesson at Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs) Jawa Timur. By using qualitative approach, this study involved 6 English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers from Surabaya, Malang, and Pasuruan representing the demography of the city as metropolitan city, education city, and santri city. Data were taken from classroom observation and interview which then those were analysed by firsly categorizing into some dimensions. The teachers’ beliefs were categorized into their knowledge on integration, the important of integration, and integration in English lesson as well as the supporting policy from the school. The teachers believed that the integration of Islamic values is significant in English lesson as the manifestation of K-13 focusing on KI 1 and KI 2, and school policy. The beliefs influence the teachers’ practices in which they have been trying to insert Islamic values in their teaching activities. The level of integration was still at integrating religious routines such as ‘doa bersama’, ‘reciting some Surah’, ‘warning praying time’. The integration in the content of English lesson was still not strongly practiced even some teachers have done it by giving added values when explaining a particular material. The situation was mostly influenced by inability to operationalize the values into the teaching materials and the lack of model for integration. Further study on how to operationalize the integration, and on developing the model of integration will be worth investigating.

Abstract

The using of HOTS questions to stimulate the learners’ thinking skills is essential to meet the challenge of 21st century. However, we know little about to what extent and what particular aspects of HOTS implemented in Indonesia English National Examination. Therefore, in order to fulfil the gap, the present study attempts to identify the use of HOTS-based questions and what particular skills appearing under HOTS category in English National Examination. We examine one package of each English National Examination from 2013 until 2018. We analyse 210 multiple-choice items in which each examination contain 35 items of reading comprehension. The items are analyzed quantitatively through content analysis based on the aspects of HOTS in Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy.  The researchers find that there is insufficient amount of HOTS questions in English National Examination. 157 items classified into the LOTS and only 53 (25.23%) items are classified into HOTS. The second finding is that the level of HOTS included in English National Examination 2013-2018 is only the level of Analyze. The Differentiating and Organizing are the subskills of the aspect of Analyze that are mostly included in all examinations. There is strong evidence for encouraging the test developers to provide adequate portions of HOTS-based items in English National Examination.

Abstract

Feedback is needed in writing since feedback informs learners about their actual state of learning performance through offering guidance on the knowledge that they seize (Narciss, 2008 and Bijami et.al, 2013). Traditionally, feedback performs the role of teacher to help students improving their writing. Since, it takes time and class size constraint into consideration and alters the writing approach from product into process; peer feedback takes an essential part in writing. This study proposes ?Teacher and Guided Multiple Peer Reviewers in Enhancing EFL Students? Writing as there were some researches complaining that peer review may fail to identify some of the mistakes. Therefore, I propose multiple peer reviewers that will work in each stage. The frst stage (1st reviewer) will deal with unifed, well-developed, and coherent paragraph. Next, the second stage (2nd reviewer) will deal with sentences problem and pictures use and the third stage (3rd reviewer) will concern on the pattern of paragraph. The students will obtain teacher feedback after they have seen three peer reviewers. The feedback given focus on two sides; criterion-based and reader-based feedbacks to reduce students? anxiety since both of criteria support each other. The feedbacks clarify how well students? work meets the criteria on scoring rubric while they also will get a sense of how well their writing achieves the intended communicative purpose to the reader.
