Abstract

Emha Ainun Najib, best known as Cak Nun, is a prominent writer, humanist, “dai” or “ulama”, and a preacher. Despite his profound concerns on social, political, cultural and religious issues, he expresses them in simple language and accordingly, is explicable to the lower-class society. He named it “Maiyah”, or “Maiyahan” as a forum to articulate and convey his views. It is a medium to critically discuss various social, cultural, political, or religious issues. As a medium of dawah (tabligh), it can be classified as non-formal education based on educational perspective. Supported by his populist style, and exceptional literary and rhetorical ability, he evokes the critical reason of his congregation and promotes a sociable and understandable tabligh. In contrast to the design of formal education, non-formal education has no time-constraint and the materials are miscellaneous. Unlike general tabligh, which is commonly a one-way communication and normative, Maiyah discusses actual issues in dialogic forum. It is closer to critical education model which aims to construct participants’ critical awareness towards a transformation of social structure.

Abstract

The institutionalization of Mohamad Djazman’s idea to provide intensive education for Muhammadiyah cadres has been realized in the establishment of Pondok Hajjah Nuriyah Shabran or commonly known as Pondok Shabran. The idea is discussed in the present qualitative research with descriptive analysis method. The establishment of Pondok Shabran has contributed to the creation of cadres who have resolute ideology, high militancy, moral characters, the capacity to perform Islamic propagation and the contribution in community life, simultaneously and integratively. Nevertheless, the current phenomenon indicates the re-emergence of caderization problems as the consequence of the sub-optimal implementation of Mohammad Djazman’s notion. Therefore, the corroboration of the initial idea is required since it is very appropriate and can be a solution for the current and future problems.

Abstract

This study discusses the prophetic discourse in the study of Islamic education. It is a library research focused on prophetic discourse and Islamic education. The prophetic theory developed by Kuntowijoyo was employed to reveal the prophetic dimension of Islamic education. The three prophetic dimensions of Islamic education are: humanization, liberation and transcendence. On this basis, this study affirms prophetic education as an alternative concept of Islamic education. However, prophetic education becomes a contextual education discourse of society change and seems to be less sensitive to the community development. Yet Islamic educational institutions can establish prophetic discourse as a form of ijtihad in the development of Islamic education.

It reveals that character education based on Manhaj of Salaf As-Saalih implemented in Salman Al-Farisi Boarding School is initiated since the acceptance of new students by identifying their ability and family background as the basis of development strategy for the internalization of values incorporated in each program of school activities. The methods of targhib and tarhib as the courtesy and morality control are the tool for students to motivate and practice their knowledge. In addition, the school stimulates and strengthens the characters through individual guidance by constructing good communication between teacher and students. The evaluation of learning output shows the achievement of cognitive or intellectual aspect in students, as well as affective aspect as indicated by several characters such as disciplined in attending the class and self-motivation to know and understand the conveyed material, which are closely related to the achievement of strengthening the student’s character. It can be concluded that character education based on Manhaj of the Salaf As-Saalih will contribute in realizing the goal of national education and in generating perfect humans who able to develop both themselves and the nation.

One of the problems that emerge today is the neglect of values and morals in each educational activity. Abstract

The 1980s is the starting point for the discourse of the transformative-critical pedagogy among Indonesian Muslim scholars. It is Paulo Freire, a Brazilian pedagogue and critical social thinker, who introduces the early idea of transformative-critical and attempts to understand Islam empirically, at once. Initially, this idea exclusively discussed by NGO activists and Catholic clergies. Subsequently, the struggle between transformative-critical pedagogy and transformative Islamic thought generates a new concept known as Transformative Islamic Education (TIE). From a restricted theme among the NGOs, it expands as a discourse among lecturers of higher education. This sociological-based expansion allows modernist Muslims to participate in this litigious intellectual discussion. Ahmad Syafii Maarif, Moeslim Abdurrahman, Abdul Malik Fadjar, Noeng Muhadjir, Mochtar Buchori, Amin Abdullah, Musa Asyari, Abdul Munir Mulkhan, and Said Tuhuleley, to mention some modernist Muslim pedagogues who are renowned in the discussion and implementation of critical pedagogy. Essentially, the discourse of critical pedagogy among modernist Muslims has prompted the possibility of different nuances in defining transformative Islamic education.

Abstract

This article is a philosophical reflection of KH. Ahmad Dahlan educational practice. Based on the historical fact that KH. Ahmad Dahlan undertook the character education contained in Surah Al-Ashr to his students for 7-9 months. This educational practice is manifested in the form of “Pengajian Wal-Ashri” for young women and “Wal-Ashri Cadre School” for male youth. This makes the spirit and ethos of al-Ashr embedded in young men and women, thus creating a "theology of pious charity" (amal shaleh). The theology encourages the spirit of praxis and activism of Muhammadiyah followers to perform humanitarian work in the fields of education, health, social, economics, community empowerment, philanthropy and others later known as " al-Maun theology" and "Al-‘Ashr theology ". Using the perspective of the philosophy of reconstructionist education of George Count and Bourdieus sociology approach to social practice, it can be concluded that Muhammadiyah education gave birth to a religious-transformative character inspired by Surah Al-Ashr.
