Abstract

Applied Linguistics is the academic discipline concerned with the relation of knowledge about language to decision making in the real world. It is used to reveal human language feature expression into language function. Poetry is one of literary world that emphasizes on individual performance and underlies the theory of elocution. Figurative language is a tool that an author employs (or uses) to help the reader visualize (or see) what is happening in a story or poem. There are three types of figurative language used in the application of poem. They are: Metaphore, allusion, and Imagery. ??The Garden of Love? is one best poem ever talking about a church. It is a kind of imagery that refers to a place of a private life of joys and happiness that is the church in a whole light. It is not easy to interpret poetry unless the readers have schematas in their mind.

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed at finding the answer to the following research questions: (1) What is the method used by English teacher to teach writing descriptive text at seventh grade of SMP Negeri 3 Klaten Academic Year 2016/2017? (2) What are the problems faced by the English teacher in teaching writing descriptive text at the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 3 Klaten Academic Year 2016/2017? The objectives of the research are divided into three, there are writing, descriptive text and the method used by English teacher. This study used descriptive qualitative research. The researcher as a non-participant observer. The researcher did three times observation in VII H and doing interview with one English teacher to know about the method used by English teacher to teach writing descriptive text. The subject of the observation consists of 37 students from VII H in SMP Negeri 3 Klaten academic year 2016 / 2017. The instruments used to collect the data were observation, interview and study document (lesson plan, syllabus and student work sheets). The researcher did three steps to analyze the data. There are the data reduction, the data display and the verify conclusion. The researcher use triangulations as a trustworthiness of the data.The finding of the research showed that the teacher did on the first and the second meeting was all in line to the frame work of task-based language teaching. There were three stages in implementing task-based language teaching in a classroom, which they were the pre task stage, the task cycle and the language focus. The problems were the student lack of vocabulary and did not know how to use the appropriate verb in the sentences. The teacher gave tasks to increase the student vocabulary and know how to use the appropriate verb in the sentences. The models of the tasks were matching, whether is it right or wrong. Beside this, the teacher taught step by step so that the students can understand about the lesson, especially writing descriptive text.

Abstract

This research is aimed to find out: (1) The students’ problem in learning Vocabulary and (2) The extend the use of Make a Match technique to increase students’ vocabulary mastery for the fourth grade students of SDN 4 Troso in the academic 2017/2018. The method in this research is Classroom Action Research. It was carried out in three cycles of actions. In each cycle consist of Planning, Action, Observation, and Action. The Research was done based on Kemmis and Mac Taggart Design. The technique for collecting data are observation, test, and interview. The data were analyzed by using quantitative data and qualitative data.The problem got in this research was the students feel tired and bored, because the teacher asked the students to write the vocabularies and to pronounce the vocabularies. After conducted of Make a Match Technique students enthusiastic in the lesson and looked enjoy during the implementation of Make a Match Technique . The result of this research showed that Make a Match Technique can improve students' vocabulary. It could be seen from the average in every cycle.The first cycle was 70.98, then the second cycle was 73.7, and the third cycle was 76.1, which stated that Make a Match Technique was effective to taught vocabulary mastery at Fourth Grade of SD Negeri 4 Troso.

Abstract

This paper aims to descibe a concept how to help students master the irregular verb forms. While there are so many students who are getting difficulties in mastering them. It is proposed to be applied for junior high school students. Meanwhile, there are some students like playing Rubik??s cube. Rubik??s is a kind of scramble game that was discovered by Prof. Erno Rubik in 1974 from Hungaria. The writer would like to use the students?? hobby in order to help them master the irregular verb forms. It is assumed that by using their hobby can help them master the forms while enjoying the game. This paper uses experimental research by a control class. The students would be given pre-test before getting treatment and post-test after being treated. The control class students are not able to play Rubik??s cube and the treatment class students are able to play it. The problem of applying this concept is a researcher need to work twice for students who are not able to play Rubik??s cube.

Abstract

            Penelitian ini menjelaskan teknik penerjemahan yang digunakan dalam acara TV National Geographic. Teknik penerjemahan yang digunakan adalah teknik dari Molina dan Albir. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui penyesuaian budaya penerjemahan teks terjemahan dari bahasa sumber ke bahasa sasaran. Penelitian ini diawali dengan memilih acara, mentranskripsikan bahasa Inggris, dan menulis ulang teks terjemahan pada layar acara. Setelah itu, data diteliti mengenai penyesuaian budaya dalam menerjemahkan bahasa Inggris ke dalam bahasa Indonesia.  Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada penyesuaian budaya dalam menerjemahkan bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa sumber ke dalam bahasa Indonesia sebagai bahasa sasaran.

Abstract

This essay has distinguished perspective in its purpose although there are many research on ??What??s in a name??. It tries to identify the prime signifier of drama Romeo and Juliet. There must be one statement could be inferred as the drama??s prime signifier. After being read couple times, the writer concluded that drama Romeo and Juliet??s prime signifier is in popular statement ??What??s in a name??. The inference is based on sign analysis. The conclusion has been got is that ??name? is the index for anything being the obstacles of Romeo and Juliet?? love. This name ignorance was proved by their decision of daring to die. Besides, this statement can be the miniature of all themes talked in the drama.

Abstract

The main purpose of English learning is to develop four skills of the students. Unfortunately, the students got difficulties in reading. The reading comprehension on Hortatory Exposition text of the eleventh grade students of MA Darul Hikmah Menganti Kedung Jepara is low. The subject of this research were 68 students. The objective of this research is to know whether there is a significant difference between the reading comprehension on Hortatory Exposition text of the eleventh-grade students of MA Darul Hikmah Menganti taught by using Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) Technique and those who are taught by using Three Phase Technique in academic year 2017/2018. This research is a true experimental research which takes the eleventh grade students of MA Darul Hikmah Menganti Kedung Jepara as the population. The instrument of the research was test. The data were gathered through only post-test.  The result of the research showed that the student’s reading comprehension on Hortatory exposition text of the eleventh grade students of MA Darul Hikmah by using CIRC Technique was more sigificant difference. The post-test score of the experimental group (82.4) is higher than the control group (71.4). from the result of statistic calculation, it was obtained that the value of t-observation () is 5.39 and degree of freedom (df) is 66. In the table of significance 5%, the value of degree of significance is 1.99. comparing those values, the result is 5.39 > 1.99 which means that t-observation () score was higher than t-table () score. In the other words, the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the Null Hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Therefore, teaching reading comprehension on hortatory exposition text by using CIRC technique is effective than Three Phase technique.

Abstract

Assessment of learning outcomes is one of the important activities in the world of education as explained in Permendikbud No. 23 of 2016, assessment is the collection and processing of information to measure the achievement of student learning outcomes. This research produces a product in the form of blog media as a guide to improve the ability to write and create web. Blog. Blogs can be accessed anywhere and anytime, as long as they are connected to the internet network. The material in this blog is tailored to the needs of written material for middle school students. Blog material is also validated through three aspects. These three aspects were validated by material experts, trainers, and participants in writing activities. The first aspect is the clarity of the material delivered. The validation results show an 80% number which means that the material delivered is clear. The second aspect is communicative language and ease of understanding. The validation results show 81% which means that the language on the blog is very communicative, making it easy for users to understand. The last aspect is the suitability of the material with the aim of journalistic extracurricular guidance. The validation results show 77% which means that the material is in accordance with the purpose of writing skills.

Abstract

This study was aimed at enhancing the ability of the thirty-six EFL students of the English Study Program at IAIN Jember in reading comprehension by exploiting the SQ4R method. To achieve the purpose, a collaborative classroom action research design was employed by following four stages: planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. This study was implemented in two cycles, in which both the first cycle and the second cycle were carried out in two meetings. This method consists of five stages; survey, question, read, reflect, recite, and review. The steps of surveying and questioning were implemented in pre-reading, the steps of reading and reflecting were implemented in whilst-reading, while the steps of recite and review were implemented in post-reading. Overall, the study has revealed that the SQ4R method enhanced students’ reading comprehension as well as students’ participation in the classroom. Keywords: SQ4R, reading comprehension, classroom action research

Abstract

This thesis is entitled The Effect of the Four Square Strategy on Students’ Vocabulary Mastery (a-quasi experimental research at the eighth grade students of MTs. Hasyim Asy’ari Bangsri in the academic year 2018/2019). This study is to know the effect of the four square strategy on student’s vocabulary mastery. The researcher used a quasi-experiment research. This research design consists of some steps; pre-test, treatment and post-test. The sample of this study was the eighth grade students of MTs. Hasyim Asy’ari with the total was 68 students. There were three classes (8B, 8C and 8D) as participant in this study. Students of 8B was the trying out participant, then students of 8C was chosen as the Control Class and students of 8D was chosen as the Experimental Class. The Experimental Class taught by using the four square strategy. Meanwhile, the Control Class taught by conventional method. The result showed that the Experimental Class was Better than Control Class. In the pre-test, the mean score of Experimental Class was 49,058 and the Control Class was 48,588. Both of groups had increase in the mean score of post-test, the Experimental Class was higher than Control Class with the score of Experimental  class was  63,058 and the Control Class was  59,764. Moreover, the result of t-test calculation showed that the t-observe was higher than t-table at 5 % significance level or 2,465> 1,66827. It means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the nul hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. It could  be interpreted that  there was significant different between students who were taught by using the four square strategy in students’ vocabulary mastery than who were not taught using the four square strategy.
