Abstract

Tulisan ini bertujuan mendiskripsikan pentingnya inovasi media pembelajaran bahasa asing dengan lagu. Dalam meningkatkan pengayaan kosa kata bahasa asing, metode menghafal tanpa ada bantuan media saja tidak cukup. Maka perlu ada inovasi media yang menarik,mudah diingat, dan menyenangkan. Penelitian ini dilakukan di SMPUT Bumi Kartini Jepara. Peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa inovasi media pembelajaran untuk meningkatkan kosakata bahasa asing peserta didik menggunakan media flashcard dan lagu.  Flashcard dirancang sesuai karakteristik peserta didik yaitu flashcard yang dilengkapi kosakata bahasa asing, gambar, dan materi serta diterapkan dengan nada dan secara berpasangan.

Abstract

In millennial era, many young generations use social media for various purposes. One of them is for improving their English quality. This study aims to know the social media applications mostly used by the students, the English skills can be improved and the reasons why they use social media for improving English quality in millennial era. The participants are30 students of Class B, second semester of English Education Department in IAIN Kudus. In collecting data, this qualitative research used observation, interview and documentation. Based on the data, there are three results. First, the social media applications mostly used by the students are youtube, instagram, facebook, and line. Second, the students’ English skills can be improved by social media in order are listening, speaking, writing and reading. And, they use social media for improving English quality in millennial era because it isfun, interesting, easy to use/access, effective, simple and informative.

Abstract

The objective of the research is: to find how effective is the use of comic strip to improve students’ ability in writing recount text at the eighth grade of MTs. Al Muttaqin. The research used was quasi-experimental research which carrie out two classes, one for experimental class and the other for controlled class. The population of this research was the eighth grade students, there were 8A for experimental class and 8B for controlled class. The result of the research showed that the used of comic strip in teching writing of recount text was effective. It could be seen from the result of calculating that the students’ gained score in experimental class was higher (22,59) than the students’ gained score in controlled class (18,41). Based on the statistic calculting with significance level of 5%, it showed that to was higher than tt, that was 2,000 > 1,990. Therefore, it prove the alternative hypothesis (Ha), which stated that there was significant diffference between the students’ gained score in learning writing recount text by using comic strip and the students’ gained score in learning writing recount text without using comic strip at the eighth grade of MTs Al Muttaqin.

Abstract

International Maritime Organization (IMO) clearly requires adequate communication skills in the English language for Maritime Academy level. Often the resources allocated for teaching english are minimal and the acquisition of speaking and writing skills are subordinated to the acquisition of technical maritime expertise. The aims of this paper is to find out the problems faced by nautical cadets of  STIMART “AMNI” Semarang in Maritime English class and to investigates the needs of the Nautical cadets in order to develop good syllabus and appropriate to their need. The present research finds that the language abilities that the maritime cadets mostly need are speaking, listening and writing skills. This paper also explain some current problems that faced by cadets toward Martime English course. They should be communicate well to the other crew when they do their apprentice on board of a ship. The findings are unequivocal signals for language educators to adapt new approaches to teaching English for specific purposes that suitable for the cadets.

Abstract

The assessment of oral production and good English speaking ability can be success indicators for students of English study program at UNISNU Jepara University to be qualified teachers. However, students of fourth semester still found weaknesses to acheive. This research was conducted to improve their learning achievement in speaking skill and assessment. It made use a classroom action research design through communicative approach type academic debate and oral production test. The initial condition of students speaking skill was categorized as poor level because the mean score of pretest was 50. The application of cyclic process, which consisted of two cycles, involved four steps: planning, action, observation and reflection. The increasing ability in each cycle could be seen from their scores either individual or team. The individual score of each session for three aspects of debate had gradually increased. The mean score of cycle I was 72 which can be categorized as sufficient level and cycle two was 83 which meant at very good level. The students’ responses were also positive after this learning model was applied. They also admitted that they had learned many things which were related to their skill in controlling emotion, practicing speaking ability, enriching vocabularies, and arguing in positive attitude.  Based  on  the  finding  and  discussion,  the  type academic  debate  and  oral  production  assessment  can  improve  students’  ability in speaking English.

Abstract

This research was discussed about error analysis on using simple past tense in writing recount text. The objective of the study were to find out the types of errors, to describe the students error, and to find out the difficulties of students on using simple past tense in writing recount text. The approach of this research is qualitative research. The instrument of this research were writing a recount text, choose the right sentence or word from a recount text, and interview. The subjects of this research were 25 students of eighth grade students of SMP BINA BERSAUDARA 1 Medan. The data was collected by students’ answer sheet. The collected data was identified, calssified, analysed and interpreted based on the types of errors using theory corder’s were 237 errors. The finding revealed that there are 4 types of errors. They are omission, addition,selection, and ordering. Selection was the dominant errors with 151 errors (64%), followed by ordering with 37 errors (16%), addition with 31 errors (13%), and the last was addition wirh 18 errors (7%). Based on the data analysis above, the most of students’ errors was selection and the least of students’ errors was addition.

Abstract

Organizing ideas was one of the crucial problems in the millennial era faced by the first grade English department students at IAIN Kudus in English writing. To encounter that problem, the observer (who was also the English writing lecturer) proposed the students to use the innovation of graphic organizers techniques to organize their ideas on English writing. For that reason, this study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of graphic organizers innovation in organizing students' ideas on English writing ability as well as their attitudes towards this essential language skill. The sample of this study was composed of 10 first semesters of English department students at STAIN Kudus during the academic year 2017-2018. This study (within subject design) was conducted in three phases. Two main sources were used to generate data for the study: (1) samples of students' English writing before and after the graphic organizers intervention, and (2) a writing attitude survey which was administered twice before and after intervention. The writing scores of the participants before and after the graphic organizers' intervention were compared and analyzed quantitatively using the test of significance to see if there were any distinctions between means of the scores. The data generated through the writing attitude survey was analyzed qualitatively to identify any changes in students' attitudes. The results of this study proved that the innovation of the graphic organizers techniques had significantly enhanced the millennial students' ability to organize ideas on English writing and had positively impacted their attitudes towards this skill. These results suggest that graphic organizers innovation can be an effective support in teaching writing for EFL learners.

Abstract

The current study is aimed at investigating embedded characters that can be found in the English textbook entitled When English Rings a Bell for Eighth Grade of Junior High School. More specifically, this study is to analyze whether picture and utterance reflect the eighteen character building values. This study was qualitative approach using content analysis. The data used in this study were in the forms of utterances and pictures in the textbook. The primary instrument of the research was the researcher and the questionnaire was also employed as the second instrument. Some steps were undertaken during the data collection: reading utterances and regarding pictures carefully, understanding specific parts related to the research focus intensively, selecting the utterances and pictures related to the research questions, making a description of the data accompanied by a coding process and inserting the data into the table, analyzing the data with eighteen character, and distributing the questionnaire to the rater in order to validate the analysis of each data. The results related to the occurrence of characters, all 18 characters described by Kemendiknas were found in the pictures and utterances of an English textbook entitled When English Rings a Bell for eighth grade of junior high school. Friendliness/ communication character was the most dominant character found in the pictures and utterances with 38 data. It implied that the authors wanted to raise the students’ friendliness/ communication.

Abstract

AbstractThis article is aimed to find out how significant is the difference in students’ achievement of speaking skill on descriptive text who taught by using pair work technique and those who taught without using pair work technique. Pair work technique is a technique that requires students to completing task or work in pair. This study was quasi experimental research. The population was tenth grade students of MA Walisongo Pecangaan and 46 students were chosen as the sample. Tests were used as the instrument of data collection. Then, the data was analyzed by using t-test. The result showed that pair work technique is effective in improving students’ speaking skill on descriptive text. This was proven by the tvalue (2,391) was higher than ttable (2,021) (2,391 > 2,021). That calculation also had already proved by SPSS. It meant that hypothesis which stated that pair work technique is effective in improving students’ speaking skill on descriptive text was accepted. So, it could be concluded that pair work technique is effective to improve students speaking skill on descriptive at tenth grade students of MA Walisongo Pecangaan Jepara. Pair work technique also can be used by English teacher as a variety among the other technique because this technique is required students to be more active in completing their task.  AbstrakArtikel ini bertujuan untuk menemukan seberapa signifikan perbedaan pencapaian kemampuan berbicara siswa khususnya dalam teks deskriptif yang diajar menggunakan pair work technique dan mereka yang diajar tanpa menggunakan pair work technique. Pair work technique adalah teknik yang mengharuskan siswa untuk menyelesaikan pekerjaan secara berpasangan. Penilitian ini merupakan penelitian quasi eksperimental. Pupolasinya adalah siswa kelas 10 di MA Walisongo Pecangaan dan 46 siswa dipilih sebagai sample. Tes digunakan sebagai instrument pengumpulan data. Kemudian, data dianalisis menggunakan uji t. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa pair work technique efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa khususnya dalam teks deskriptif. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan thitung (2,391) lebih tinggi daripada ttable (2,021) (2,391 > 2,021). Perhitungan itu juga telah dibuktikan dengan SPSS. Artinya, hipotesis yang menyatakan bahwa pair work technique efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa terutama dalam teks deskriptif diterima. Jadi, dapat disimpulkan bahwa pair work technique efektif untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa kelas 10 MA Walisongo Pecangaan Jepara. Pair work technique juga dapat digunakan oleh guru Bahasa Inggris sebagai salah satu teknik di antara yang lain karena teknik ini mengharuskan siswa menjadi lebih aktif dalam menyelesaikan tugas mereka.

Abstract

Teaching vocabulary mastery means giving instruction to the students to learn about vocabulary in English so they will know or understand the vocabulary of songs. Vocabulary mastery should get more attention because there are many Tuna Grahita students’ who get information and difficulties in learning. The objective of the research is to find out if there is significant difference of the vocabulary mastery achievement of the eighth graders of SMPLB Negeri Jepara between before and after being taught by using English songs. The design of this research was pre-experimental research which used pre-test and post –test. The population of this research is the Tuna Grahita class which consist of 44 students. The samples are the students of eighth grade, the instruments of test is oral or speak, multiple choices test and colouring draw. The result of this research showed that the result of pre-test was categorized as sufficient. The score of mean and standard deviation were 60,5 and 21,39 meanwhile , the result of post test was categorized as good. The score of mean and standard deviation were 70,8 or 71 and 17,87. The calculation of t-test got 2,42 with the level of significant 0.05 or 5% and (df) 12. It was concluded that there is a significant difference between vocabulary mastery achievement for the eighth graders students of SMPLB Negeri Jepara before and after being taught by using English songs.
