Abstract

The aims of this study are to find the similarities and differences of politeness in Balinese and English. Based on the discussion there are some similarities and also differences between Balinese and English. Balinese language is used mostly in Bali Island. It has the same characteristics with Javanese language. It is used in daily conversation and adat (social organization in Bali) meeting among Balinese people. Balinese people are popular for being polite, friendly, and helpful. They have principles of menyama braya (cooperative), asah, asih, asuh (understanding), ngendepang raga (good manners) in getting along with other people. Balinese speech varies depending on social context, using three levels of language called alus sor, alus madya and alus singgih. When one is speaking, he/she has to apply the principles of “nganutin catur wangsa” (using certain level of language based on his/her status of being superior or inferior) and ngendepang raga (good manners).

Abstract

The teacher often uses translation or mother tongue (L1) during the instructional process in EFL classroom. However, the use of translation is still going debated. In order to make the best use of translation in instructional process, it is necessary to know when and why the teacher uses it. Related to this present study, there were two aims of the study, namely to find out in what situations do the teacher use translation and to find out the teachers’ reasons for using translation in relating to the situation of classroom instructional process. This study followed qualitative interactive descriptive approach. There were three English teachers at the 7th grade classes at SMP Negeri 4 and SMP Negeri 5 Singaraja as the subjects of the study. The data was collected through observations and interviews. The data obtained were analyzed descriptively. The results of study showed that the teachers used translation (L1) in such situation, namely: (i) giving instruction, (ii) presentation, (iii) checking comprehension, (iv) language testing/language assessment, and (v) eliciting language. In addition, there were two reasons of using translation by the teachers namely, the students did not understand many vocabularies, sentences, and material given in English and the students felt uncomfortable if the teacher used English only in the classroom.

Abstract

There are two functions of language, namely commucative and expressive. As people listen to the music through its lyrics, language tends to be expressive since it is able to convey the meaning and background of the song. Figurative language is used to create a special effect ot the audiences. Figurative language carries non-literal meaning which helps the songwriters to convey the meaning of their songs.  Therefore, this study aimed at identifying and describing the type and the meanings of figurative language which were used in Eminem’s song lyrics and determining the dominant type of figurative language used in the songs lyrics. This research used descriptive qualitative as the method. In collecting the data, the researcher used library research (reading and noting), since the data were already existed in the form of documentation (song lyrics). After the data were collected, the data were analyzed by using Cresswell’s theory. From the analysis, the researcher found that there are 136 data containing figurative language and 12 types of figurative language which are used in the song lyrics. Simile type of figurative language is mostly used in the song lyrics. Therefore, it is suggested that the students keep learning to do figurative language analysis in literary works in order to enrich their insight about figure of speech.

Abstract

Even though codeswitching has become a natural phenomenon and occurred in regular basis during the teaching  and  learning  process  in  bilingual  classroom,  the  pedagogic  analysis  of  the  occurring  switches should  be  taken  into  account  to  figure  out  whether  the  switches  are  indeed  a  pedagogic  tool  used  by bilingual  teachers  for  the  comprehension  and  achievement  of  the  lesson  content.  Therefore,  the objective  of  this  study  is  to  figure  out  the  functions  of  teachers’  code‐switching  during  classroom teaching  and  learning  process  in  Garuda  Bilingual  Kindergarten.  This  study  was  conducted  using  a descriptive  qualitative  design.  The  data  were  collected  through  classroom  observation  and  recordings. The  obtained  data  were  analyzed  based  on  the  coding  categories  of  pedagogic  function  theory.  The findings  indicate  that  the  functions  of  the  occurring  code‐switching  are:  1)  instructional  for  content acquisition,  2)  reformulation  of content,  3)  facilitation,  and  4)  habitual.  The  result  of  this  study  is expected  to  be  useful  especially  for  teachers  to  know  the  role  of  code‐switching  in  supporting  the emergent  bilinguals  during  classroom  teaching  and learning  process  as  well  as  to  help  teachers  plan  a more effective language strategy.

Abstract

This study concerned with experimental research which investigated whether or not there was any effect of Generating Interaction between Schemata and Text (GIST) and beliefs about language learning on reading comprehension. This study was carried out in Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha 2nd semester students at English Education Department. ANOVA test indicated that the students who were taught using GIST outperformed the students who were taught using conventional reading technique, and there was interaction between kinds of strategy and students’ beliefs about language learning. In terms of beliefs about language learning, the result of Tuckey test showed that for the students who hold positive beliefs, GIST gave better contribution to reading comprehension than the conventional reading technique. While for those who hold negative beliefs, there was no significant difference in reading comprehension between the students who were taught using GIST and conventional reading technique.
