Abstract

Species of entomopathogenic fungi, i.e. Metarhizium anisopliae (Metsch.) Sorokin, Metarhizium brunneum Petch, Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuillemin, Fusarium oxysporum Link and Aspergillus flavus Link were tested their effectiveness as bio-control against to subterranean termite Coptotermes gestroi Wasmann. Pure culture of each fungal species was stored in 40C. Before used, those fungi were recultured in Sabouraud Dextrose Agar with Yeast Extract (SDAY) media and incubated in 240C and RH 95% for 3 weeks. The series of conidial density has been used (0, 107, 5x106, 106, 5x105 and 105 conidia/ml) for pathogenicity test. The LC95 of M. brunneum was used for contact and baiting methods and the bioassay was repeated four times. The data was analyzed using ANOVA and with DNMRT. The lethal concentration (LC) and lethal time (LT) were calculated using probit analysis. The results revealed that increase of conidial density of each fungi species caused more mortality of C. gestroi. All fungi species could cause mortality of C. gestroi more than 80% even with the density of 5x106 conidia/ml, however M. brunneum could causing mortality more than 80% at density of conidia as low as 5x105 conidia/ml. Based on the probit analysis, the value of LC50 and LT50 with contact method were calculated at 1.8 x 105 conidia/ml and 2.01 (1.52 ~ 2.40) days respectively.

Abstract

The total plywood production depends on veneer production due to log consumption. The ratio of veneer volume to log volume was stated as veneer recovery. The veneer recovery was affected by wood species and log diameter. Three wood species of Shorea selanica, Terminalia catapa and Duabanga moluccana were used in this experiment with four levels of log diameters. This experiment used the split block design and orthogonal polynomial analyses for equal space. The statistical analysis shows that wood species, log diameter and their interaction gave significance to highly significant effects on veneer recovery. The regression model for effect of log diameter (X) on veneer recovery (Y) by orthogonal polynomial analysis was Y = 34.373+ 0.429 X, with R2 = 0.7366

Abstract

Utilization of fungal entomopathogen as biological control agent has been developed in several country, but not in Indonesia. Therefore, the use of biological control agent to control termite need to be done in order that diminish chemical insecticide hazard. In this research, the ability of fungal entomopathogen (Hyphomycetes) identified as Metarhizium anisopliae, Beauveria sp. and Humicola sp. to infect Subterranean termite will be evaluated. The fungi were isolated from Indonesia. The research methods are (i) to sporulate fungi in rice culture media; (ii) to formulate fungal entomopathogen being infection materials; (iii) bioassay of fungal entomopathogen against Subterranean termite by contact method. The result of bioassay show that the three fungi (Humicola, M. anisopliae and Beauveria) are able to kill termite in 14 days of observation day. Primarily, M. anisopliae has generate termite’s mortality almost similar to Humicola sp. i.e higher than 60 %, in other side Beauveria just affect termite’s mortality lower than 60 %.

Abstract

This study was aimed to investigate the drying properties and schedules of five wood species from West Papua, i.e. Tarua (Antiaris toxicaria), Sonokembang (Pterocarpus indicus), Merbau (Intsia bijuga), Mangium (Acacia mangium) and Mendarahan (Myristica longipes). Modified Terazawa Method was used for the drying properties tests. The physical properties measured were airdry density and green moisture content. The determination of drying schedule was carried out by examining the wood drying properties at 100ºC.Results indicated that the drying properties were not affected by density but by wood anatomical structure. One of 5 wood species (i.e. Merbau wood) was resistant to high temperature although its density is the highest. Based on drying properties, all samples of 5 wood species could be classified into 5 drying schedule groups.

Abstract

The aim of the research is to determine chemical compound in Kulilawang (Cinnamomum culilawane Bl.) and Masoi (Cryptocaria massoia) woods. All chemical compounds were determined by GC-MS. Results shown that Ethanol extract from the heartwood of Kulilawang contains eugenol and safrol. While, massoilactone was isolated from the ethanol extract of Masoi’s heartwood.

Abstract

The development of paper and pulp industry cause waste handling problem. A kind of waste that needs serious attention is sludge. Sludge handling by burning causes air pollution problem, while land filling need much more infestations and areas. Therefore, composting believed as the most effective way to handle sludge. The objective of this research is to increase sludge product utility and to know quality of compost charcoal from sludge. The materials used are sludge from PT Indah Kiat Pulp and Paper Tangerang, Banten, saw dust, saw dust charcoal, and particular bio- activators called OrgaDec were used to stimulate the decomposition of those materials. The methods used are total carbon, nitrogen, phosphor (P2O5), kalium (K2O), magnesium (MgO), cation exchange capacity (CEC) and total Calcium (CaO). The best composting pH and temperature is treatment without charcoal addition. The treatment made pH and temperature goes down by charcoal addition. Analysis quality of compost charcoal show that charcoal addition will cause increasing of CEC and decreasing C/N ratio.
