Abstract

Learner autonomy is essential in order to make the students become responsible for their own learning. However, it does not mean that the students are fully independent of their own learning. The teacher’s roles and presence are important to introduce the students to the concept of autonomous learning as well as to promote strategies to foster learner autonomy. This study aims to find out the teachers’ perceptions of the concept of learner autonomy and to find out the strategies used by the experienced and the novice English teacher to implement learner autonomy. This qualitative study was conducted in public senior high schools in Bandung. An experienced and a novice English teacher were involved in this study. The data in this study were collected through observation, interview and questionnaire. The study revealed that experienced and novice teacher hold almost the same perceptions that autonomy means the students’ active role in managing their own learning. The teachers pointed out that autonomous learning gives benefits to students’ learning. However, the experienced teacher was more optimist than the novice teacher regarding the possibility to promote learner autonomy which affects their classroom practices to promote learner autonomy. It is proved that the experienced teacher offers more strategies since she believed that learner autonomy is applicable for all language learners despite students' ages, levels of proficiency and cultures. It was found that the teachers used blogs, self-journal, videoconference and collaboration as strategies to promote learner autonomy.

Abstract

This research is aimed at finding out the effectiveness on applying flipped classroom to enhance learning autonomy and how its impact on gender based students’ learning autonomy. The researchers was applied convergent parallel mixed methods design. The populations of this study were senior high school in Pangandaran and the researchers selected a particular class. The class which participated is X MIPA 4 which consist of 11 male and 19 female as the experimental group and X MIPA 1 as the control one which consist of 12 male and 18 female. The totals of participants are 60 students. The data collected from pre-post Learning Autonomy Questionnaire (LAQ) and pretest-posttest as quantitative data and interview as qualitative data. The questionnaire was analyzed by using SPSS 16.0 for Windows. The result showed there is a significant difference in students’ learning autonomy between students who are taught by means of flipped classroom and those who are not. Moreover, female indicates more autonomy than male in both class even before or after the treatment. Pretest-posttest indicated although the score of autonomy is increased, it does not have significant impact on their narrative reading comprehension test. On the other hand, based on the interview both female and male students respond positively about applying flipped classroom to enhace their learning autonomy even though there is no huge difference for male. In conclusion, flipped classroom has given a good impact in students’ learning autonomy even for female or male students although not give significant impact in students’ learning outcomes especially in narrative reading comprehension.

Abstract

This paper seeks to explore the undergraduates’ experiences when reading journal articles as references for their thesis composition through a narrative inquiry. Four undergraduates of English Language Education program at UIN Mataram were interviewed to analyze  what they encountered when reading such genre. The findings suggest that their experiences mostly circulated around their motivation and challenges, therefore the narratives were focused on these facets. In terms of motivation, these students seemed to be strongly driven by controlled motivation that entailed the need for a model, accessibility and currency, as well as demands from supervisors and institutions. Furthermore, these students also encountered challenges in terms of unfamiliar academic technical terms and vocabulary, boredom due to text complexities, and failed reading strategies. These findings imply the need of scaffolding the reading of journal articles for undergraduates in their final year of study.

Abstract

There have been many studies on English grammar, but a dearth of studies has been conducted in the cross-sectional fields such as seeking how the field of grammar makes contributions to reading comprehension. Accordingly, the current study sought to find out the impacts of explicit and implicit instructions of English connectors on EFL students’ reading comprehension. 50 third semester students from an English department at a university in Bengkulu were incorporated as the samples. Adopting a quasi-experimental method, those 50 students were split into two classes, the so-called experimental and control classes. Students in the experimental class were taught English connectors explicitly, and those of the control class were taught English connectors implicitly. Before eight times of treatments in the form of the two ways of instructions, students of the two group were given a valid and reliable reading comprehension pre-test, and a similar construct of post-test was given after the eighth treatments ended. The data of the current study were analyzed by deploying paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test. The present study revealed that explicit and implicit instructions of English connectors had positive impacts on EFL students’ reading comprehension. However, the explicit instruction of English connectors enhanced EFL students’ reading comprehension more significantly and more effectively. It is recommended that further studies be conducted to replicate the present study in different contexts for the sake of providing rich data to confirm the current study’s results.

Abstract

Motivation has been long believed to be an essential contributor to students’ success in learning English. Many studies (e.g., Gbollie & Keamu, 2017; Wang, 2008; Zhang & Xiao, 2006) have been dedicated to investigating the relationship between motivation and success in learning English. While these studies have contributed to shedding light on the importance of motivation on students’ achievement in learning English, insufficient research has been conducted to address the concept of motivation itself, how the concept has evolved since the first time it was developed, and to what extent motivation affects both teachers and students’ performances at school. Owing to this fact, the present article seeks to discuss the notion and conceptualization of motivation by following several steps. First, the present paper took on arguments from prominent figures on the field of motivation to explore the essence of motivation and why it is essential for English as second or foreign language (ESL/EFL) learning. The conversation then built on the current theoretical framework of types and factors influencing student and teacher motivation. Following that, a plethora of discussions on the possible ways to increase student and teacher enthusiasm and motivation inside EFL classrooms were elaborated.

Abstract

This research aims at analyzing the first language interference toward students’ English speaking as foreign language made by sixth semester students in course design subject, such as phonological interference (pronunciation), grammatical (morphological and lexical), and lexical interference (vocabulary), and the factors that caused interference of the first language. This research is descriptive qualitative. The findings of the research explained that students made three types of interference categorized as phonological interference such as pronounce the word incorrectly (vowel, diphthong, consonan, and allophonic variation), grammatical interference such as in morphological (singular-plural agreement) and syntactical (subject-verb agreement, phrase, comparative adjective, possessive adjective, and parallel structure),  and lexical interference such as in vocabulary (combining between Indonesian and the English language). The data showed that students often make error in phonological aspect. The factors that caused first language interference are lack of knowledge, Indonesian transfer, and lack of vocabularies of foreign language that mastered by students or respondents.

Abstract

This is a case study that aims at analyzing students' English proficiency as reflected in students' TOEFL-Like scores at Universitas Sains Alqur'an Central Java in Wonosobo, Indonesia particularly years 2017, 2018, and 2019. The study focuses on students' achievement of English proficiency embedded in TOEFL-Like scores which consist of three sections, namely Listening, Structure and Written Expression, and comprehension of Reading. Considering the huge number of the data (2811 participants), to do the research, the data are conducted statistically using the SPSS application. In detail, the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to find mean (to know students proficiency achievement), minimum, maximum and standard deviation values (to know the variance of students' English proficiency levels). Categorization of the proficiency levels is referred to Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) standard. The study revealed that structure and written expression is the most difficult test faced then consecutively reading and listening. Then, the lowest and the highest scores were 217 and 567 with a standard deviation 31, 4. Furthermore, the mean of the total TOEFL-Like score achieved was 369, 09. Therefore, the students were mostly categorized as basic users (A2). The study suggests that an appropriate module can be considered to help the students to reach better proficiency, especially in a matter of structure and written expression section.
