Abstract

This research aimed to find out the strategies used by students in completing TOEFL reading comprehension test, types of reading comprehension in TOEFL test that was difficult to be answered by students, the greatest challenges factor for students in completing reading comprehension in TOEFL test, and the score of the 2nd semester students of STTIKOM Insan Unggul Cilegon-Banten. This is a descriptive qualitative study based on observation, interview, questionnaire and test as the instruments of collecting data.The sample is 20 advanced STTIKOM undergraduate students at Cilegon-Banten in Academic year 2018/2019 who were asked to do a PBT TOEFL reading comprehension test.The result showed that inference (33%), vocabulary (40%) and unstated details (50%) questions are the most difficult types to be answered by students. Related to the strategy, three of the strategies (skimming and scanning, top down and guess meaning ) are used by students in answering reading comprehension in TOEFL test. The greatest challenges for students in answering TOEFL reading comprehension in TOEFL test are less motivation in reading a text, less practice and they did not mastering vocabulary well. In addition, the TOEFL score of STTIKOM Insan Unggul Cilegon-Banten was insufficient to achieve standardize test or low.

Abstract

Music is one of the communication media to convey implied messages. Music is also a cultural means that is present in society as a construction of social reality as outlined in the form of song lyrics. The most prominent social music functions are found in the lyrics. An ideal song lyrics do not only contain ideas to entertain but also have moral or idealistic messages and have the power of constructive social criticism. One of the musicians who dared to create songs about social problems was the band Shaggydog who released a song titled Putra Nusantara. The purpose of this study was to determine the meaning of social criticism on the song Putra Nusantara using the Teun A. Van Djik approach covering the dimensions of the text, dimensions of social cognition and dimensions of social context. The text dimension will analyze the macro structure, superstructure and micro structure, then discuss it into the dimensions of social cognition and social context dimensions to find the meaning of criticism of the song. After analyzing the micro structure, which is based on syntactic, semantic, stylistic and rhetorical structures, it turns out that there are many clauses that are incoherent with one another or based on the superstructure, in the temple scheme many meanings are even lost. However, based on the overall meaning, the song implies to state officials who do not pay attention to proper education for children. However, based on social cognition, the song cannot be proven true if the school is expensive. Macro structure can be seen from the relationship of the text with what is in the minds of listeners. Then, in the social context, there are a lot of satirical expressions that can be known meaning based on the social context.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the translation strategy at the word level used in the translation of the song in the animated movie "Let it go" from English into Bahasa Indonesia. The frequency with which each translation strategy is measured. The translation strategy for addressing disparate words at Word level proposed by Baker (1992) is applied as a framework for data analysis. The data for this study is the lyrics of the original song "Let it go" sung by Idina Menzel in the original movie produced by Walt Disney "Frozen" with a translation version of Indonesian. The result shows that the seven strategies proposed by Baker (1992), identified as used in this study. Translation strategiesare translated by disappearances, translated by paraphrasing using unrelated words, and translations by cultural substitution.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to know English lexical loanwords into Indonesian languages in tourism magazine. In this research, the writer uses descriptive qualitative method where she describes the corpus of English lexical loanwords into Indonesian languages in tourism magazine, suc as 9 loanwords from three tourism magazines of English lexical such as Intisari, Tamasya and Jalan-Jalan. The loanword of English lexical is not entirely derived from English itself but from French, Dutch, Latin and others. In tourism magazines use the loanword of English because of prestige. The English loanword made in Indonesian has more prestige.

Abstract

The aims of this study were: (1) to discover the target needs of higher education students, (2) to discover the learning needs of higher education students, and (3) to build-up a suitable digital story of Banten Folktales for higher education students. This was a Research and Development (R&D) study. The research procedure, adjusted from ADDIE model proposed by Taylor (2004), comprised of conducting the needs analysis, designing a course grid and a storyboard, developing the first draft of the digital story, evaluating the first draft, and producing the final draft. The instruments to collect the data were needs analysis questionnaire and correspondent survey questionnaires. The information from the needs analysis was analyzed quantitatively using frequency and rate, and after that the comes about were utilized as the premise to create the course grid and storyboard. The quantitative data from the correspondent survey was analyzed through descriptive statistics while the comments and suggestions were used to revise the first draft to be the final product of the digital story. The developed product was valid and appropriate after being evaluated in correspondent review phase in terms of its content and design with the average score 4.69 categorized as very highly valid.

Abstract

This paper is intended to understand how translation ideology occurs on students’ translation text of English Master Program at Postgraduate of University of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa. The problem is formulated as follows; how does translation ideology occur on students’ translation text of English Master Program at Postgraduate of University of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa. Data of the research resulted from the students’ translation text from English (SL) to Indonesian Language (TL). The result shows that the translation ideology of domestication is commonly occurred to avoid the awkwardness of the target text readers. This also makes the target texts have their readability and adjustability to TL culture and situation. On the contrary, the translation ideology of foreignization is mainly occurred to keep the relevance of the source text’s linguistic and cultural values.

Abstract

Thematic learning is being promoted where in one learning is interrelated. The purpose of this study is first, to find out how much students respond to the use of bilingual modules in thematic learning, and to find out how much thematic learning achievement using bilingual modules. This research was conducted at SDIT Widya Cendekia, Serang, Banten, using quantitative writers. The writers used a bilingual module on thematic learning therefore students were more interested and easier to learn. The activities of students who pay attention to the lessons explained by the teacher was still a few, therefore the subject matter delivered is poorly understood by students. Used of bilingual modules is one alternative that can be used thematic concepts it could be better understood by students. Learning media is used a bilingual module. In general students stated that they agreed to learn thematic using bilingual modules in class. This can be seen from the student response seen from the results of the questionnaire that as many as 77.1% of students gave a high response and 22.9% of students gave a low response. This means that bilingual modules are very effective in learning and their achievement.

Abstract

The objective of the study were (1) To know the process of teaching writing skill in narrative text at tenth grade of SMK PGRI 3 Kota Serang (2) To find out the result of students writing skill in narrative text by using dispersion imagination at tenth grade of SMK PGRI 3 Kota Serang. This research is used a mixed method research design, classroom action research. The result of the research were (1) the process of teaching narrative text using dispersion imagination in writing skills of two steps; pre-cycle and cycle. The result of research showed that the research in cycle 1, the writer used the move picture, the students to listen and look at the move picture in slide at the Power Point about the material. The students write narrative text from the story by using dispersion imagination. In cycle 2, the use of film is able to improve students writing skill in narrative text and develop idea to write well. While the role of teachers who are not just as facilitators, but also as a motivator and inspirator are also able to provide new supported in the learning process. There is improvement in writing skill of the students after the treatment. It can be seen from their main score of pre-test and post-test. (2) There was improvement in the pre-test main score (41.00), the first post-test mean score (45.00), and the second post-test main score (76.00). The achievement of writing in post-test is 76,00%. In conclusion, there was significant improvement of the students in writing skill in narrative text by using dispersion imagination.

Abstract

This research is mainly purposed to find out whether there is influence of using pronunciation bingo game to improve students’ pronunciation at first grade in MTs Alkhaeriyah Kepandean Ciruas Serang. The game is applied by experiment class and control class. The method of this research is true-experiment research. The population in this research is the first grade in MTs Alkhaeriyah Ciruas Serang. The writer took three classes with total number of the first grade are 132 Students. They are three classes, 44 Students from class VIIA and 44 Students from class VIIB and 44 Students from class VIIC. The writer took 60 students as sample and uses random sampling because the writer uses true-experiment method. To analyze this research the writer uses T-test method and to get the data the writer uses observation technique, and test as instrument of research. The observation is to know the students’ pronunciation at the first grade in MTs Alkhaeriyah Keoandean Ciruas Serang, while, test is to know the influence use of pronunciation bingo game to improve students’ pronunciation at the first grade in MTs Alkheriyah Kepandean Ciruas Serang. After having analysis data, there is influence using of pronunciation bingo game to improve students’ pronunciation between experiment class and control class, based on the calculation is know that t table with level significance 5 % = 2,00 and with level significance 1% = 2,65 so tobservation n = 20,34 > t table = 2,00 or tobservation n = 20,34 > t table = 2,65.the conclusion is that the writer reject H0 : to < tt . It means there is no influence the use of pronunciation bingo game to improve students’ pronunciation at the first grade in MTs Alkhaeriyah Kepandean Serang and receive Ha : to > tt. it means there is influence the use of pronunciation bingo game to improve students’ pronunciation at the first grade in MTs Alkhaeriyah Kepandean Ciruas Serang.

Abstract

This study is focused on analysis of the politeness expressed by the main characters and supporting characters in “Beauty and the Beast” Movie. The objective of this study are to know the politeness expressed by the main characters; Beauty (Belle) and the Beast (Prince) and to know the politeness expressed by the supporting characters in “Beauty and the Beast” movie. This Study is qualitative research that used content analysis method. Technique of data analysis in this study is using descriptive qualitative. The result of analysis are the sum of expression of politeness in saying thank you are 8 expressions, in saying hello are 7 expression, in answer the saying hello are 2 expressions, in use ‘I’m sorry’ are 5 expression and of how to sound more polite are 5 expressions. The sum of all expression of politeness that expressed by the characters in “Beauty and the Beast” movie are 27 expressions. Based on the discussion of the result of analysis, It can be concluded that expression of politeness is important in communication and it usually use in conversation when people in saying hello or greeting, when people answer the saying hello or greeting from others, when people ask with the sound more polite, and the last when people saying use ‘I’m sorry’ to refused and ignore something and ask to forgiven by other people. This study can be applied to conduct the learning material in teaching about the English expression in conversation, especially expression of politeness.
