Abstract

The fictional narrative is a form of literature often found in everyday life, such as in novels or short stories, comic strips in newspapers, and in poetry. Reading fictional literature has a positive effect, however previous research had not as yet shown any conclusive evidence that such reading increases empathy. This research was aimed at testing the influence of reading fictional narratives on empathy, mediated by narrative engagement. The method used in the research was an experimental one, with a pre-test/post-test control group design. 194 undergraduate students were actively involved as the research participants. The results of the analysis of data, using a Wilcoxon signed-rank test and a causal step approach indicated that reading a fictional narrative may significantly increase the empathy of the reader, and that the relationship of these two variables were partially mediated by narrative engagement. This research provided supportive data to the idea that fictional narratives may raise levels of empathy and that that influence is mediated by the variable of narrative engagement. The public is enjoined to read fictional narratives, such as novels, comics, short stories and poetry of a variety of genres, to experience an increase in empathy.

Abstract

Teachers who have self-efficacy regarding their abilities play an important part in the educational process. The instrument “Teachers’ Sense of Efficacy Scale (TSES)”, which consists of 24 items, measures the self-efficacy of a teacher in conducting his or her role in the classroom. This research was aimed at testing the psychometric properties of the Indonesian language version of the TSES, using Rasch testing. 245 State Primary School teachers in the Special Capital District (Daerah Khusus Ibukota - DKI) of Jakarta, Indonesia, took part in the study. Analysis results indicated that the reliability index and the separation of item and person scales of the TSES fulfil the criteria well. In the study of the structure of the organisation of the instrument, tests of the unidimensional quality and accuracy of the items/models showed they fulfil the conditions for measurement by Rasch modelling. In the rating scale, data analysis indicated the necessity of simplification of the range of response choices, and also of the variation in the difficulty of the items, which is not very uniform, so that a large proportion of respondents were not easily measurable, via this instrument. The results of the research indicated two items which showed bias, when dealt with by different groups of respondents. Based upon the information resulting from this testing, this script discusses recommendations for the modification of the Indonesian language version of the TSES instrument, with the aim of producing an instrument having good psychometric qualities, to measure the self-efficacy of teachers.

Abstract

The Anchor Personality Inventory (API) is based on the Anchor personality theory. The objective of this study is to perform a comparative analysis between the internal structures of API and Big Five Personality. The data was collected from 333 students from a university of various faculties. The data analysis to examine the structure of API was an exploratory factor analysis. The result of the study shows that the API constructs fall into different factors, separated from the Big Five Personality constructs. Virtues is the strongest construct of API, followed by material, self, and others.

Abstract

Many tertiary students do not complete all the steps of their tertiary education because they encounter difficulties in adjusting themselves to university life. The aim of this research was to determine the role of upbringing (by both father and mother) and the “college self-efficacy” (the self-confidence of the students in completing their study obligations) regarding college adjustment (CA) [US term] of first-year students of the Faculty of Technology of University X [name concealed], in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. 139 students were involved in this research, and completed an instrument to measure the research variables. The research data was processed, using regression analysis, to determine the contributions of patterns of upbringing and self-efficacy of the students, regarding college adjustment. Based upon the analysis conducted in the research, the results indicated that the parenting style and college self-efficacy generally had a role in the college adjustment of the student. However, the results more especially indicated that a pattern of permissive maternal upbringing had a significant negative contribution to their CA, and that college self-efficacy had a significant positive contribution to that CA. This paper then discusses the magnitude of the role of the parent, compared to the self-efficacy of the student in his or her achievements, when undertaking tertiary education.
