Abstract

Speaking is a crucial part of the language learning process. However, many students find speaking as one of the most difficult skills in English. Therefore, the researcher wants to improve the students’ speaking ability through the suitable teaching method, in this case the debate. The objective of this research referring to the research problem is to find out how the debate method can improve speaking ability. Based on the research problem and the relevant theory, the hypothesis of this research is described as follows: Debate method improves the speaking ability of the fifth semester students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Jember in the 2017 / 2018 academic year by developing their activeness in expressing oral argument logically in a systematic way. The design of this research is classroom action research. The research subject is the fifth semester class consisting of 34 students. Test and observation are used to obtain the data. The data collection involved a number of instruments namely Test of Speaking English and Speaking Rubric. It was then evaluated by using speaking rubric covering fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar. Debate method improves the students’ speaking ability in two cycles from M = 61.84 in Cycle 1 to M = 70.34 in Cycle 2 and the percentage of students scored (E = 66.67%) in Cycle 1 to (E = 83.34%) in Cycle 2. The observation result from 56.15% students’ activeness in Cycle 1 to 85.29% students’ activeness in Cycle 2. Based on the data above, there was significant impact of Cycle 2 implementation on the students’ speaking ability. It can be concluded that debate method is able to improve the students’ speaking ability.

Abstract

This study is to know the use of Story Grammar strategy to improve reading skill at eight grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Giri. The design of the study is classroom action research. The researcher played two roles in this research; as a teacher and a researcher. During implementing the strategy in the classroom, the researcher was accompanied by teacher partner. This research was conducted in one cycle, which was divided into four main activities; planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The reflection was based on the findings during the observation and compared with criteria of success including: (1) students’ average score is 60 (passing grade for English lesson), and (2) students can participate actively in the class. The research findings showed that this strategy was effective to teach reading comprehension at eight grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Giri. It was indicated on the students’ average score of post test. The students’ average score in the pretest was 37. After applying Story Grammar strategy the score improved in the post test. The students’ average score in the post was 70,28. The improvement was also shown in the students’ performances in the class. In the first meeting, some students could not join the activity in the classroom well. Day by day, students performed increased during teaching learning process until the fourth meeting. They showed their motivation and participation well. Finally, it can be concluded that Story Grammar strategy could improve students’ reading comprehension skill. The researcher suggests for English teachers especially in teaching speaking to use Story Grammar strategy. Then for the future researchers can apply such technique more deliberately, so the reading comprehension problems could be solved well.

Abstract

Good writing is important aspect in teaching writing subject. But the students find some problems that they faced in their writing which is in generating and organizing the ideas. Besides, the teacher also has problems in applying the appropriate method and media in teaching writing. Based on the previous studies, four square writing method gave the positive effect for the students. This study was to examine the significant effect of four square writing method through Picture Series in Writing Narrative Text for Eleventh Grade at SMA Nusantara Balongpanggang. And the researcher uses quasi experimental design. The researcher chose eleventh grade at SMA Nusantara Balongpanggang which totally consisted of 31 students. The researcher used cluster sampling because the school has been determined the classification of the students. It was included 16 students of XI-IPA as the experimental group and 15 students of XI- IPS as the control group. The data was collected by using tests; pre-test and post- test about writing narrative text. After getting the data, the researcher analyzed the data using SPSS 16.0 and used Independent Sample T test. The research finding showed that there was a significant difference between experimental group that were taught by using four square writing method andcontrol group that were taught by think pair share. It was proven by the result of sig. (2-tailed) is .000. The sig. (2-tailed) is lower than 0.05 (0.00 < 0.05) so, null hypothesis (Ho) can be rejected. The researcher concluded that four square writing method gave positive effect on students’ writing skill. The students were motivated and independent in learningwriting especially in generating and organizing the ideas. Therefore, the researcher suggests to the English teacher forimplementing of four square writing method through Picture Series as an alternative method in English teaching learningprocess and hopes to use four square writing method in other skills and levels to make different with the previous study.

Abstract

English for Specific Purposes has grown to become one of the most prominent areas of EFL teaching. ESP provides learning of English skills such as: Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing. There are also assessment used in ESP for those four skills. In speaking skill, the instruction of the assessment should be given by the instructors based on the objectives of speaking skill itself. In developing speaking test, the instructors should consider on some aspects such as general objective of the test, specific objective of the test, the type of the test, time allotment and how to score the test. This research used qualitative research because the focuses of this research were to explain the assessment process implied by the instructors and to find the kind of assessment type, material, source and scoring used by the instructors in ESP Speaking Class at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. In this research, the writer used Observation, Interview, and Documents as the research instruments. The result of this research showed that the instructors used most of assessment types based on basic types of speaking assessment (Intensive, Responsive, Interactive, and Extensive) excluding (Imitative). The material and source sometimes can vary depending on the each objective of the syllabus. And in the scoring method, the instructors used analytic and holistic scoring.

Abstract

Online Learning requires teachers to think creatively and innovatively to attract students. Learning media becomes the main factor in helping teachers make it happen. This study aims to find out the perception of English teachers in the use of canva application as a virtual learning media creation in Loei Thailand.This research applies mixed method design that starts with collecting quantitative data. After analyzing quantitative data, qualitative data is then collected and analyzed. 20 teachers were asked to fill out a questionnaire to find out their perspective on the use of Canva. This research has proven that canva application can be used to create learning media. The result in this research was the function and benefit of canva divided into two, namely as sumplemen and subtitusi. The supplement function of canva is (1) Canva fasilitated teacher to make learning media, (2) Canva Application Improve online teaching process. The substitution function of canva is (1) Canva Application Improves learning media effectively, (2) Learning media of Canva is easy to distribute to students (3) Canva application can help the technology requirement. That is, the function of Canva obtained in this study.

Abstract

This study investigated the significant effect of small group discussion toward students’ presentation skill of hortatory exposition text. The design of the study was quasi experiment. The researcher chose the eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Kebomas which totally consist of 46 students. The sample was divided into two groups. XI-MIPA-1 was as the experiment group and XI-MIPA-2 was as the control group. The data was collected by using tests, pretest and posttest. The research finding showed that there was difference between experiment group who were taught by small group discussion method and control group who were taught by peer discussion. It is proven by the result of sig. (2tailed) is 0.039 and 0.038. The sig. (2tailed) is lower than 0.05 but it closer to 0.05. So, the null hypothesis can be rejected. It means that small group discussion gave positive effects on students’ presentation skill. The researcher concluded that small group discussion gave positive effect on students’ presentation skill. They were better in developing paragraph and better in word choices.

Abstract

This study purposed to develop language learning materials to support literacy skills of Seventh D grade students at SMPN 2 Wonoayu. Classroom Action Research design was employed in this study. The data were collected through document study, observation, questionnaire, and test. The findings show that the literacy coverage of English language learning for Seventh D grade students includes reading simple descriptive texts and writing simple and meaningful descriptive sentence. The rich language learning environment materials were developed in various texts such as topical vocabulary, grammar focus, everyday expression and language game, need to be developed. The quality of the developeddescriptive text material is good based on the result of the expert judgments and the result of questionnaires. The descriptive text material was effective to support Seventh D grade students’ literacy skills based on the result analysis on the literacy skills. The post-test result was significantly higher than the pre-test scores. Thus, the material is recommended to be used as supplementary material to support students’ literacy skills of seventh D grade at SMPN 2 Wonoayu.

Abstract

This research aimed to determine the correlation between students’ reading interest on short story and students’ translation ability. This is a quantitative research using the correlation method. Data were collected from online questionnaires and test. This research uses bivariate correlation analysis as a research design. Respondents in this research were 8th grade students of SMPIT Al-Ibrah of the 2020/2021 academic year in Gresik, East Java, Indonesia. This study found that students’ reading interest on short story had a positive and significant correlation to students’ translation ability with a rxy value of 0.969> 0.349 (rtable value) at the level of significance 0.05.

Abstract

Based on preliminary observation most students feel hesitate to continue English conversation when they lacked of vocabularies and structured grammatical sentences. The students prefer to stop speaking. Therefore they need strategies to keep the communication on. Dealing with the problems, the present study investigates the lexical and grammatical communication problems that can be managed by communication strategies. An observation was done to 60 students in different levels of proficiency. it was revealed that there was a significant difference in the frequency and percentage of learners’ solved lexical problems (72.2 %) and grammatical problems (27.8%). The results drawn from these items were that EFL students used communication strategies on lexical problems are more frequent than used communication strategies on grammatical problems. This strategy is one small step towards clarifying the balanced of using communication strategy on lexical and grammatical problems in communication.

Abstract

Writing is a productive skill that the students give their ideas, knowledge, and opinions about something into the text. Many students consider that writing is a complex skill. In addition, the teacher often spends much time to explain the materials, then it makes the students do not have enough time to finish their writing task to solve those problems, the researcher offers learning method of flipped learning to engage the students doing the activities of writing. Based on the previous studies, flipped learning was given the positive effect in language teaching and learning, such as grammatical performance, reading comprehension, students’ achievement and stress. Thus, making different from the previous study, the researcher applied flipped learning which combines with graphic organizers to teach writing skill. This study was to know the significant effect of flipped learning through graphic organizers toward writing skill. The design of this study was quasi experimental design with 11th grade of social students at MAN 2 Gresik as the subject. The researcher took two classes as the sample by cluster random sampling. They were XI.IPS-1 which consisted of 38 students as experimental group and XI.IPS-2 which consisted of 39 as control group. The data was collected by distributing pre-test and post-test, then researcher analyzed it using SPSS 16.0, independent sample t-test. The research finding showed that there was a significant difference between experimental group and control group. It was proven by the result of the sig. (2-tailed) was 0.012. The sig. (2-tailed) was lower than 0.05 (0.012 < 0.05), so the null hypothesis (H0) can be rejected. It means that flipped learning through graphic organizers had significantly affected toward writing skill. Further, it can be concluded that flipped learning through graphic organizers gave the positive effect toward writing skill at MAN 2 Gresik.The researcher suggests for English teacher to apply flipped learning as an active learning approach in language teaching and learning process. For further researchers, it is hoped to apply flipped learning to develop other skills with the different way.
