<![CDATA[Grammar is very important in learning and using languages so that using correct grammar will indicate clearly what the writer says. The objective of this research is to find out if the correlation between simple present tense mastery and writing ability in self-introduction texts of the tenth grade students of SMK N 1 Kalinyamatan Jepara is 1) significant for female students, and 2) not significant for male students. This correlational research was conducted in SMKN 1 Kalinyamatan Jepara with 30 students from Class X Tata Boga 2 (BG 2) for female and 30 students from Class X Teknik Elektronika Industri 1 (EI 1) for male as the samples. Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used to analyze the data. The findings show that the correlation of simple present tense mastery and writing ability in self-introduction texts of female students is significant while that of male students is not significant.]]>

<![CDATA[Abstract. The objective of this research is to find out whether there is a significant difference between students’ writing recount text before and after being taught by using Instagram as a media or not. In this research, the researcher used quantitative method and used quasi-experiment as the design of the research. The number of sample is 36 students from X MIPA 4 which are taken by using cluster random sampling technique. The researcher uses test as the instrument of the research. The test is in the form of writing test to know the students’ writing ability before and after being taught by using Instagram as a media. The result of the research shows that the students’ mean score have an improvement from 6.8 to 8.8 and from good categorize to excellent categorize. And the standard deviation from the students score has decreased from 0.89 to 0.83 which means that the students’ post-test score is well distributed than the pre-test score. The calculation of t-test shows that the Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. It is because the to (t obtain) falls in the critical region and to (t obtain) is more than tt (t critical). The to (t obtain) is 5.3 while the tt (t critical) is 2.042. In conclusion, there is a significant difference between students’ writing recount text before and after being taught by using Instagram as a media. <![CDATA[The investigation in fact aimed mainly to analyze the theory of conversational implicature proposed by austin and later on extended by grice’s principle maxim which can be universal and applied to all languages of the world, including java language art show of ketoprak entitled “joko kendil”. The study is expected to be beneficial to the world of literature. In addition, the writer hopes that the result of the study will also give additional information to the reader and contribute to the development of literary study particularly among students who are interested in the literary study. Twenty-three minutes recorded video conversation of all participants of the show data were transcribed into written form and translated into english. Needless to say, the analysis of the data has been based on both austin’s and grice’s principles of pragmatics, conversational implicature theory. Illustrative examples for flouting the four maxims of speech were introduced and analyzed pragmatically. Particularly the research was objected to find out the violation of maxims of quantity, quality, manner and relation flouted and an implicature from each generated. From the analysis, it was found that the claim of “ketoprak” speech can be systematized and it has implicatures in one way but not in another is to some extent true. Thus, this theory can be applied to other java language idiolects.]]>

The objective of the research is to find out the kinds of social media used by fourth semester students of English Education Department of Universitas Muria Kudus for learning English. The researchers used descriptive qualitative research and the data was collected by the use of questionnaire. <![CDATA[Due to the global era, bachelor thesis abstracts written by non-native English speakers (Indonesians) from non-English departments in Indonesia are usually written in two languages, i.e. Indonesian and English. The English bachelor thesis abstracts are mostly the translated ones from Indonesian and do not always follow the features of abstract genre. This study aims at examining the rhetorical moves of English bachelor thesis abstracts written by students from non-English departments. The data consisted of twenty abstracts selected randomly from hard and social science departments of Universitas Muria Kudus. The analysis employed Hyland’s five rhetorical move model. The study reveals that most English bachelor thesis abstracts did not follow the five rhetorical moves. The absence of some rhetorical moves in the English bachelor thesis abstracts may lead to the communicative purposes not achieved and thus might cause difficulty for readers to understand the study.Keywords: move, English bachelor thesis abstract, Indonesians]]>

<![CDATA[The internationalization of institutions proclaimed by Universitas Negeri Semarang has led to the emergence of bilingual class program in every study program. The challenge faced when there are bilingual classes is the ability of lecturers in several majors to provide courses in both English and Bahasa. This study aims at answering the challenges currently faced by UNNES when providing a bilingual class. Then, it is to illustrate and describe the implementation of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) on the tennis class at the Faculty of Sport Science. The result show that combination of CLIL and SFL was chosen because CLIL teaching method has two simultaneous focuses on content and language while SFL is a teaching method emphasizing the deconstruction of academic genres texts as well as explicit teaching on text features. It is expected that the combination of the two can produce teaching methods that emphasize course material and mastery of English as a medium of instruction in a balance and easier to understand due to the explicit deconstruction of academic texts. ]]>

Song is taken into consideration as it offers exciting learning experience, and that song lyrics is beneficial to carry information, elicit memory and activate thought and ideas. <![CDATA[This research explained how listening comprehension by Short Story Gap Fill improved students’ listening comprehension achievement, observed students’ behavior during listening comprehension class and described the teacher’s Gap Fill technique along with the research. It used Classroom Action Research (CAR) with quantitatively data then analyzed into qualitative. The qualitative data were about students’ interview, while the quantitative data was their scores in pre-test and post-test on listening comprehension. Short Story Gap Fill contained listening comprehension exercises which tend to prove the missing words or phrases on a script of a story or a dialog; they were “pre, while and post-listening which focused on students’ ability to carry out the gap on the listening exercises. This research consisted of two cycles. The findings involved, the third-semester students of the English Department were fascinated by Short Story Gap Fill and immersed in listening comprehension well. However, during the first cycle, there were still 3 from 31 incompletely fulfill the gap in listening comprehension because they could not catch the vocabulary well and less focus. Ultimately, on the second cycle, the students' accomplishment in listening comprehension through this technique improved dramatically on their score of using the same technique. <![CDATA[A serious challenge which is faced by teachers is educating character and bringing norms being practiced by the society into the classrooom, and English teacher is no exception. The challenge makes IndonesianEducation is very dynamic as everything dealing with normsis always thethe concern and developed by scholars, parents as well as the government. Some scholars propose to foster English teachers as models of practicing norms, while some others think to integrate norms into teaching materials. The second thought invites curriousity on how the writer of English textbook supports the recent concern on norms, and the research on it becomes very important to do. Therefore the research dealing with several reading passages in the English Textbook was done. The design was descriptive qualitative which aimed at investigating whether the writer of English textbook integrates norms in reading passages he/ she wrote. The data was norms, while the data sources were reading passages in the 2015-English Textbook developed by The Ministry of Education and Culture. The result describes that norms of trust, discipline, respect to others and self-confidence were found in reading passages. It can be then concluded that the writer of English textbook integratesnorms in the text he/ she writes. The results of the research implies not only the seriousness of scholars, parents and government in fostering character education, but also the support and care of textbook writer in succeeding the education.It is therefore suggested to teachers, scholars as well as book writer to always concern with the society’s need in developing education, especially in sharing the existed and practiced norms.]]>
