Abstract

Collocation is a natural order of words in which one word should be attached to another in a particular context. For students who learn English as a foreign language (EFL students), using collocations has been recognized to become a problem. This article is going to describe EFL college students’ skill in using collocations in writing essays. 42 students from the same class were selected. They were the 4th semester students of English Education Study Program at Teacher Training and Education Faculty of UMRAH who took Essay Writing course in the academic year 2019/ 2020. The students were given a take-home assignment to write essays. Then, the essays were analyzed to find out the students’ skill in using collocations. It was found that in using collocation in writing essays, 5 students had excellent skill, 14 students had good skill, and 23 students had low skill. The incorrect use of collocations consisted of lexical and grammatical collocations. Finally, it is hoped that these findings could be a useful input for future Essay Writing course.

Abstract

This study aimed to know how is the profile of students’ English linguistic intelligence of rhetoric at SMP Islam De Green Camp Tanjungpinang. The subject in this research is the eighth grade that consisted of 21 female students. This study is based on Gardner’s theory (1998). A research design in this research is descriptive qualitative research with analysis technique. The setting of place in this research is at SMP Islam De Green Camp Tanjungpinang. The instruments in collecting the data are interviews and speaking tests. Based on the instruments, the researcher assesses students’ answers by a rubric that consisted of grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The result shows that the total score is 61.9 and from the criteria of the rhetoric on speaking, the students’ English linguistic intelligence of rhetoric at SMP Islam De Green Camp Tanjungpinang is good.

Abstract

Speaking is one of the most important skills to be developed in education curriculum in Indonesia. It indicates communicative purposes involving authentic oral interaction material because students do not study the language as a subject but also using it for social communication. The purpose of the study was to investigate whether or not there is significant effect of using Information Gap on students’ speaking skill. The population of this research were tenth grade students at SMK Negeri 4 Tanjungpinang and chose randomly by using cluster sampling. The sample of this research were 30 students of X RPL 3 as the experimental group and X MM 1 as the control group consisted 30 students. This research employed Information Gap in experimental group as the source of ideas to make the students communicate. While in the control group were taught using Rote Learning. The instrument used in the study was oral test. The data were analyzed quantitative using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. The result showed, There is a significant effect of using Information Gap on students’ speaking skill, as tcount = 2.666 and sig = 0.010 < 0.05 and the mean score of post-test in experimental was higher (74.00) than control group (69.23). It can be concluded there is any effect of using Information Gap Technique on speaking skill at SMK Negeri 4 Tanjungpinang.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the instrument and the students’ responses of reading anxiety. The approach of this research is qualitative descriptive. The gathered data were analyzed qualitatively by using Rasch Model. A questionnaire was used as an instrument to get the data. 14 female students of SMP Islam De Green Camp were involved in this research. The FLRAS by Horwitz et al was used to create a questionnaire that contained 20 items. The study showed that the quality of the instrument and the students’ responses were not good enough to be used due to their small amount. Therefore, teachers must choose and creates a good instrument to know their students’ responses about reading anxiety. Then, students are recommended to read more English texts to minimize their reading anxiety.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out whether or not there was a correlation between the students’ willingness to communicate, and learning attitudes toward speaking skill. This research used a quantitative correlation to find the relationship between the variables. This study’s population consisted of 147 students. The purposive sampling method was used to obtain the sample for this study, which consisted of 25 students from XI IPS 2 and XI IPS 3 classes. The instruments used to obtain data were questionnaires and online test. The questionnaire utilizes a google form with 10 statements and five answers in each statement to assess students’ willingness to communicate, and learning attitudes. The second, test is to obtain the results of each student’s speaking skill, which are recorded. Normality test, homogeneity test, linearity test, bivariate test, multiple correlation equation, and hypothesis test are used to analyze data. Based on data analysis, the multiple regression equation obtained 1.14, implying that there is a very strong relationship between willingness to communicate, and learning attitudes toward speaking skills.

Abstract

The teaching and learning process is changed from offline learning became online learning due to Covid-19 outbreaks. The aimed of this study was to describe how is the pedagogical competence of English teachers at SMPN 7 Tanjungpinang. This research used qualitative research method which means that the researcher describes the result of the data about teacher’s pedagogical competence consists of understanding of the students, designing of the material, developing students’ potential and evaluation. Observation and interview were used as the instruments of this research. The result showed that the pedagogical competence of English teachers in online learning is on good categories with keep regard and adjust to the needs of students during online learning. Moreover, the teachers must always improve their pedagogical competence especially in online learning. Key Words: Pedagogic Competence, Online Learning, Google Classroom

Abstract

Due to the pandemic condition, we rely more on the technology usage. Technology presents us plentiful advantages and features in the teaching and learning. Specifically in smart phones, android nowadays offer numerous applications of language learning in Play Store. This article shows the benefits of Android applications namely Duolingo, Busuu, Rosetta Store, and Memrise in learning English language. These apps enhance the user’s four language skills mastery using games, riddles and other various ways. By learning language independently, students may also their cognitive, meta-cognitive and affective skills. It aids learners to gain their goals in a fun and enjoyable ways. Further, it is also beneficial in terms of improving students’ motivation and confidence, easy and simple, practical and entertaining, and sustainability.

Abstract

Abstract The case study or case-based technique has been widely employed in a variety of areas due to the tremendous benefits it provides for teaching and learning. The Indonesian government also encourages the use of the case method as one of the methods emphasized in the Key Performance Indicators of Higher Education (IKU) guidelines. This article presents a literature review of the case study by exploring the benefits and the challenges of implementing this method in the classroom. Besides, an alternative scenario of the case study implementation in English for Medical Purposes is also presented. It is hoped that this article will give insight into the implementation of the case method in a specific setting to help students learn English in a meaningful way. Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui jenis tuturan kesantunan positif yang digunakan guru dan siswa dalam melakukan interaksi di kelas dalam pembelajaran bahasa inggris. Penelitian ini termasuk dalam metode deskriptif-kualitatif. Peneliti melakukan penelitian pada kelas XI jurusan IPA dan PK. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada sembilan strategi kesantunan positif. Jumlah total data yang ditemukan adalah 49. Hasil analisis mengungkapkan bahwa Notice attend to hearer ada 6 data, Intensify interest to hearer 9 data, Identify Markers 2 data, Seek Agreement 16 data, Avoid Disagreement 5 data, Be Optmistic 2 data, Include both speaker and hearer 1 data, Give or ask reason 3 data dan Give gifts to hearer 4 data. Data yang paling banyak ditemukan adalah Seek Agreement dan data yang paling sedikit adalah Include both speaker and hearer.Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa sebagian besar siswa dan guru menggunakan strategi kesantunan positive dalam bertutur kata dalam diskusi dikelas.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe how small group discussions improved students' speaking skills in class VIII of SMPN 14 Bintan. The method used in this research is classroom action research (CAR). The population in this study were all class VIII C of SMPN 14 Bintan students in the 2021/2022 academic year, consisting of 28 students. The data was collected through pre-test and post-test. In the first test (pre-test), the number of students who met the minimum completeness criteria of 75 was 1 out of 28 students (5%). In the second test (post-test I), students who scored above 75 or met the minimum completeness criteria were 7 out of 28 students (25%). In the third test (post-test II), 16 of 28 students (57.14%) met the minimum completeness criteria of 75. The result shows that there are some improvements in the students' speaking skills quantitatively and qualitatively. Moreover, students were more active and participated in the teaching and learning process of speaking. To conclude, the SGD worked excellently and efficiently in helping students speak English in the eighth grade of SMPN 14 Bintan.
