Abstract

Water quality in Maninjau Lake has been thereatened by organic and inorganicmatters that are flown into the lake. The pollution sources arc many activitiesaround the lake such as residential area, husbandry, agriculture, an fish culture onthe lake (floating net cage). These activities result in huge pollution laods and thetrends are predicted to increase. Understending on the pollution loads, polluitonsources and asssimilativc capacity are important in formulating pollution controltechniques in lake waters. The objectives of the research was to determine level ofpollution waters of Maninjau Lake. The results of this research showed thatpollution load parameter susch as Total Suspended Solid (TSS), ChemicalOxygen Demand (COD), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and TotalPhosphorus were very high. All parameters of pollution loads have ciceded itsasssimilative capacity. The level of pollution in the study site is classified asmedium category.

Abstract

A study on the relationship between meiofauna community structure with seagrassdensity and environmental parameters has been carried out in the Dompak Straitwaters, Riau Archipelago. This study were investigated on four different seasonsthroughout a year, from May 2005 to April 2006. Three sampling site, i.e.., Al, A2and A3 were chosen to represent research sites. The sediment samples were tekenby PVC cores, in which six layers were separated (i.e. 0-5 cm, 5-10 cm, 10-15 cm,15-20 cm, 20-25 cm and 25-30 cm). The environmental parameters, such ascurrent velocity, the sediment composition, total organic carbon (TOO, totalorganic matter (TOM), pH and redox potential (Eh), were also observed. The dataon meiofauna, seagrass density and environmental parameters were analyzedstatistically by a regression analyisis. This analysis was run using a SPSS softwareversion 11.5 for Windows. The meiofauna was dominated by Nematodes,Copepods, Polychaetes, Foraniiniferans and Turbellarians. The results areshowing that the meiofaunal community structure would depend on severalconditions such as seagrass density, environmental factors and hydrologicalcharacteristics. The regression results are showing that the meiofaunal communitystructure patterns was significantly correlated with seagrass density and to theenvironmental parameters. Vertically, the meiofaunal community structurepatterns seems to be more affected by TOC and TOM. While the horizontally, itseems to he more affected by current velocity, TOM and pH.

Abstract

In order to increase the fishing production, several efforts have been conductedand one of them is using the chemically attracted bait. To understand theeffectiveness of bait odor in attracting the fish, a study on the response ofPangusius sutchi and (lands hatracus Linn toward various bait odors has beenconducted in Pekanbaru, from 12 to 19 July 2005. This study aims to understandthe ability of fishes in detecting the odors. Three treatments were applied. The fishwere feed on chicken intestine with 3 decayed levels, namely fresh intestine, intestine that was kept for I day period and intestine that was kept for 2 daysperiod. Position/distance between the fish and the bait were noted. Result shownthat fresh chicken (U1) intestine was the most preferred by cat fish (P. sulchi),while intestine that was kept for I day period (U2) was the most preferred by catfish (C. hatracus). Chicken intestine that was kept for 2 days period (U3),however, was not preferred by both type of fishes. Based on the data obtained, itcan be concluded that cat fish (P. suichi), and cat fish (C. Indiums) are able todetect bait with different odors.

Abstract

This study was conducted to find out the health status of humpback grouper fish(('hrtmtileptes altiverts) that are fed on inorganic-iron supplement. Both, thetreatment and the control was tested in anoxia condition. The fish (average weight4.18±0.13 g/ind) was cultured in 60x40x50 cm3 aquarium and stocked by 10indJaquarium. The fish was reared for 10 weeks: and they were fed threetimes/day at satiation. Results shown that the fish fed by non-iron supplement wasmore susceptible than the normal condition; base on the index of leucocytes, nionocytes. phagocytic and MCHC distribution. However, 25 mg Fe/kgsupplement in the diet was increased concentration of Fe by 35% - 100% in liver, intestine, body tissue and enhance fish vitality at anoxia condition. The survivalrate of fish increased by 1.3 times compare to the non-iron supplementation.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to observe the biological aspects such as length, weight, length weight correlation and sex ratio. The study was done in October 2006.There were 199 females rays and 166 males rays on the observation, thus theywere measured as length and weight. Therefore, it intended to achieve the weightlength connection of those rays. The result of the observation was that the value ofmales b and females was not differ obviously by 3 or b = 3. It showed that thegrowth figure of male and female's Himantura gerrardi was isometric, whichmeans that the growing of the length was balanced from the growing of theweight. The sex ratio between males and females is 1:1.2. After testing of Test X2,it had been found that there were not significant differences between male andfemale. It also emphasized that the capture had been done for the observation wason the breeding season, thus the males and females were altogether.

Abstract

Study on the effects of oil content on the macrozoobenthic community in thecoastal waters receiving oil refinery effluents has been conducted. Samples ofwater and sediment were collected in August 2006 from three stations in oilrefinery and one control station in far distance from the oil refinery area. Waterquality parameters measured in the present study were still in the tolerable levelfor the aquatic biota. Oil content in the stations close to the oil refinery (10.17 -12.17 ppm and 11.17 - 15.42 ppm) was higher than the control station (6.92 and6.17 ppm) at high and low tide respectively. The abundance of macrozoobenthicat the control station (333.23 id/m2) was higher that the oil refinery (151.50 -281.25 ind/m2). Simple linear regression showed that macrozoobenthic abundancewas negatively correlated with oil content in the water column (Y = 431.92 -17.81 X; r = 0.64) and it was positively correlated with total organic matter in thesediment (V = -174.55 + 27.23X: r = 0.69). This study showed that the oil refineryand its related activities have significant contribution to the elevated oil contentand the decreasing water quality which finally affect the macrozoobenthiccommunity structure in the surrounding aquatic environments.

Abstract

Recently, raw water pollutions in big cities in Indonesia have become seriousproblems, especially in Pekanbaru, the capital of Riau Province. According to thisreason, it is important to develop appropriate low cost technology to solve thisproblem such as developing pretreatment using biological process such assubmerged biofilter. The present study describes the removal organic matter in theriver of Siak water using submerged biofilter with honeycomb tube plastic media. In this method, the removal efficiency of organic matter were affected byhydraulic retention time of the water in the reactor. The shorter hydraulic retentiontime, the less removal efficiency of organic matter.
