Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out whether the use of Project-Based Learning is effective in improving the eighth grade students’ ability in reading comprehension or not. The research was conducted at SMP Berea Tondano. The class consists of twenty students as the subject of the study. This research is quantitative research with one group pre-test and post-test design. Pre-test was given before the treatment. After giving the treatment, the writer collected the data for post-test. The test that used in this test was multiple choice. In this research, the maximum score of the students is 9 and minimum score is 3. The result of this research showed that the mean score of pre-test is 5.00 and post-test is 7.25. This means that the result of post-test is higher than pre-test. This result may lead to conclusion that using Project-Based Learning was considered effective to improve students’ ability in reading comprehension.

Abstract

In Indonesian, English has been decided as a first foreign language by the    national education which can be learned started from elementary school up to        university  level, but there are some students who are not interested in learning English. One way to find out the reasons for students’ disinterest in English learning arises from the data is from their own perceptions. The purpose of this study was to describe students’ perceptions/opinions on English learning in SMP Katolik St. Theresia Tanawangko. Since it dealt with students’ perceptions/opinions, this study was categorized as a survey research. The sample of this study was ninth students at SMP Katolik St. Theresia Tanawangko in the academic year 2019-2020. Since students’ perceptions were the focus of this survey, the data were collected using a questionnaire. It focused on four indicators and the questionnaire itself consisted of 20 items with 5 items per indicator. Result of the data analysis leads the researcher to arrive at the following conclusions: (1) majority of the sampling students (87%) had positive attitudes toward English learning, (2) 90%  were strongly motivated to learn English or love learning English, and (3) 93% learn English because it is a compulsory subject. They learned the language for the following purposes: to have internet access (89%), get job in the future (95%), and widen their knowledge of the world (91%). After knowing students’ perceptions, it is important for English teacher to further increase motivation and foster a sense of courage in students at school, especially in English learning.

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to find out the kinds of errors made by students in pronouncing English and To find out the factors that causes these errors to occur. The researcher used qualitative research as method to analyze the data. The data were found from the students’ pronunciation of English Department at Universitas Negeri Manado in academic year 2020/2021. In analysis the data, the researcher used error analysis method by Corder as quoted by Ellis (1994: 48). There were some steps in applying the error analysis to analyze the data. The steps were 1) Collection of samples of learner language, 2) Identification of errors, 3) Classification of Error, 4) Explaining the Errors, 5) Evaluation of errors. Based on the result, researcher found 39 pronunciation errors made by the third semester student of English Education Department at Universitas Negeri Manado. The researcher also found out the factors that caused these errors to occur. The errors were caused by L1 native language disorder and the errors also caused by a lack of knowledge of the language that is the goal of learnig

Abstract

This study was concerned the vocabulary teaching which aims at determining whether or not students’ English vocabulary can be improved by using pictures. The subjects of this study consisted of 21 students at the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 1 Siau Timur Selatan. The writer used the quantitative method in analyzing while the data was collected through pretest and posttest. The writer used the mean score formula in analyzing the data. The type of test that would be given to students was multiple choice with a total fo 20 questions. The students are taught using pictures and there was about things in the classroom. Results of this study indicated a  significant improvement in students' English vocabulary after using media in the form of pictures in teaching vocabulary. This can be proven by the average value of the pretest was 3.67 while the posttest was 7.81. It means that pictures is effectively considered to be used in improving students' English vocabulary.

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to describe whether using picture can improve students’ reading comprehension. This research involved the Eight-grade students of SMP N 1 Siau Timur Selatan were 22 students as the research subject. The design of this research is the pre-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test and the instrument used in collecting the data was a test. The data were analyzed by using the mean score. The finding shows that this research came out with finding that using picture is effective can improve students reading comprehension. The difference in student scores on T1 & T2 where the mean score of T1 was 64.54 and the mean score of T2 was 78.18. These results indicate that the use of picture in teaching reading comprehension is effective to improve students reading comprehension. This also shows that the use of picture in learning activities at SMP N 1 Siau Timur Selatan was effective to improve students reading comprehension. Therefore, it is suggested that teacher of English subject in SMP use picture in teaching reading comprehension to their students.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out the teachers’ strategy of implementing the online learning. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative and the technique sampling used in this research was semi-stucture interview, coding, and classifying. The researcher used semi structure interview to find the data by distributing questionnaire. The population of this research were 5 teachers at SMP N 2 Tondano. The results showed that the strategies used by the teacher to increase students' interest in learning were to provide students with 1) Self Preparation, 2) Preparing brief, clear, easy to understand, and interesting learning material, 3) Choosing a simple and attractive learning media, 4) Involving parents for helping teachers in online learning, 5) Conducting regular and continuous evaluations. Teaching and learning activities through online can work well when teachers, students and parents can work together and support each other.

Abstract

The language skills play a crucial role in overall development in English knowledge and even in academic success. This improvement can be seen from the progressively diverse learning methods used and various media to move forward the quality of learning outcomes. The implementation of E- learning has become alternative arrangement for teachers and students to undergo the teaching and learning process, especially in the pandemic situation. It is expected to increase students' retention of the material being taught, increase students' dynamic participation, progress students' independent learning capacities, move forward the quality of instruction and preparing materials, increase the capacity to show data with data innovation gadgets. The purpose of the study is to describe teacher’s perception towards E-Learning implementation in EFL class. This study is a descriptive quantitative research because this research is to find out the teacher’s perception toward E-Learning implementation in EFL class. The result of the study leads to the following result: in the data from the respondents’ answer related to the teachers’ perceptions on implementation E-Leaning activities. The highest score was a percentage of (24.5%) agree with the questionnaire, and lowest was (4.2%) of teachers strongly disagree with implementation E-Leaning in English class. The data from questionnaire can be concluded, E-Learning as the one of learning media that uses information and communication technology.

Abstract

This study aims to determine students' perceptions of social media to learn English. It was conducted at the Department of English Education, Faculty of Languages ​​and Arts, Universitas Negeri Manado. The method used in this study is qualitative method. The instrument for data collection was a questionnaire distributed 25 respondents of eight-semester students of the 2018 academic year. Students' reactions to each item in the spread questionnaire were examined and conferred by the researcher's understanding, opinion, experience, and outcome from hearing a song. As examples of all students, several questions were accepted positive. Based on the results, more than half of the students agree that YouTube song videos help them to improve their pronunciation skills because apart from being able to practice pronunciation, they also enhance their vocabulary. So, the results of this study indicate that learn through YouTube by using English songs video is more helps them to learn English. The research showed that YouTube songs video are a good learning source in learning English.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out whether the online learning can improve students reading skill by using WhatsApp applications or not. Online learning means learning that is done online, using a variety of learning applications and social networks. The researcher used pre-experimental research and the sample of this research is the eleventh grade students of SMA Swadharma Werdhi Agung which consist of 20 students. The technique of data collecting used was measurement technique and tool of data collecting was multiple choice, matching and true or false. As well as providing a questionnaire to see student’s opinions about the WhatsApp applications as a medium in online learning. The data were calculated with the result of students’ pre-test was 55 and post-test was 81. The students’ different score between pre-test and post-test was 26. As the result, taught online learning during pandemic by using WhatsApp applications by providing narrative text was highly effective in terms of increasing the students’ mean score of narrative text reading skill.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out type of students’ motivation in English Online Learning, whether they had integrative or instrumental motivation. The method used in this research was descriptive quantitative and the technique sampling used in this research was random sampling. The researcher used survey method to analyze the data by distributing questionnaire. The population of this research were 47 students of the grade 8th in SMP N 2 Tondano who have facilities such as handphone and internet quota. The result of the findings of the research showed that type of students’ motivation in English Online Learning that they had was integrative motivation. It was suggested for teacher is expected to grow and maintain students learning motivation to always enjoy, be earnest in learning, and keep improving their language skills.
