Abstract

This study aims to analyze the level of techincal production efficiency of smallholder dairy farming at Lembang, West Java Province. Data were collected from selected 60 farmers by using proportionate stratified judgemental sampling method. The respondents were categorized into two groups based on lactating cow : category 1 = 1-5 lactating cows, and category 2 = 6-10 lactating cows. Each category comprised of 30 respondents. The data analysis in this study used stochastic frontier production. The result of the analysis of category 2 indicated that the presence of technical inefficiency had effects in milk production by the significant estimated gamma coefficient, the likelihood ratio test and the predicted technical within farmers. The estimated gamma parameter (ɣ) of model for production function was 0.99, indicating about 99 percent of variation in output milk among farmers was due to differences in their technical efficiencies. The result indicated that smallholder dairy farming in Lembang is efficient with an average of technical efficiency of 91 percent. Factors influencing production efficiency are farmer's age, farming experience, and livestock ownership.Keywords : dairy farms, technical efficiency, stochastic frontier analysis

Abstract

Added value of curing treatment, askip drying and storing are used for knowing the benefit of shallot postharvest process. Postharvest technique of shallot makes longer shelflife but adds cost. The method adopted in the study relied on informal interview with key informants and a number of participants at different stages of postharvest chain including the producers of shallot. Data was calculated by Hayami method. The results of the study showed that curing process has losses up to 20% and margin at Rp 1.050. The storage of shallot showed different margin between conventional and cold storage. There is higher margin of cold storage than conventional. Loss at cold-storage is only 15%for 2 months. Cold-storage margin is Rp 4.025 per kg, higher than the conventional one, which is only Rp 725 per kg.Keywords : added value analysis, Hayami method, postharvest of shallot

Abstract

Development of organic vegetables in Bogor is still having problems. One is the failure to maintain market confidence. Failure  is reflected in the behavior of consumers who are reluctant to buy organic product prevent consumers to buy back the organic products. This shows people confidence to attributes and benefits of organic products (organic vegetables) are not able to meet theor needs and create satisfaction in the minds of consumers so that customer loyalty can be realized. This study aimed to asses the effect of organic vegetable product quality to customer satisfaction and customer loyalty, and customer satisfaction to customer loyalty in Bogor city. The results of this study indicate that the quality of organic vegetable products directly gives positive and significant effect to customer satisfaction, customer satisfaction directly gives positive and significant effect to customer loyalty; and the quality of organic vegetable product through customer satisfaction indirectly gives positive and significant effect to customer loyalty. The quality of the product directly gives positive effect to customer loyalty, but it's not significant.Keywords : customer loyalty  customer satisfaction, organic vegetables, product quality, Structural Equation Modeling

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to establish tbe relationship between knowledge management (KM) and organizational learning (OL), and their impacts on product innovation in SMEs food processing. 60 SMEs in food processing industry were selected in Bogor, and structural equation modeling (SEM) SMART PLS was applied to test the hypotheses in this research model. The result showed that the knowledge manangement (KM) and organization learning (OL) have a positive relationship. Knowledge manahement does not have positive effect on product innovation, while the organizational learning gives positive effect on product innovation.Keywords : Knowledge  Management, Organizational Learning, Product Innovation, Small Medium  Enterprise (SME)

Abstract

Agricultural policy in any country causes intended and unintended impact on related sectors. Essentially, introduction of new commodity policy changes incentive structure to participating farmers of the sector. Policy analysis matrix (PAM) provides a framework and tools of analysis regarding the impact of policy change in simple but quantitative measure. This PAM analysis concerned mainly on the potato sector at sample area, Banjarnegara. The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of policies on the competitiveness of potatoes in Banjarnegara district, Central Java. Location of the research conducted in Banjarnegara district, the analysis method that used in this study are qualitative and quantitative analysis. Qualitative method is used to study the location decribe general description while quantitative method is used to analyze the competitiveness of the potato and the impact of government policies that analyzes the Policy Analysis Matrix. The analysis showed that potato farming in Central Java Banjarnegara district competitiveness, however, a policy that protects the price of potato output needs to be done so that the domestic potato can compete with the price of imported potatoes.Keywords : Competitiveness, Potatoes, Policy Analysis Matrix (PAM)

Abstract

In this study, fish feed supplemented by probiotic, prebiotic and synbiotic were applied to enhance the immune response and survival rate of the fish against Streptococcus agalactiae infection. Treatments used in this study, were as follows: feed containing 1% (v/v) of probiotic (C), feed containing 2% (v/v) of prebiotic (D) and feed containing mixed of 1% (v/v) of probiotic + 2% (v/v) of prebiotic (E, defined as synbiotic). Control fish (both positive, A; and negative, B; treatments) were fed by fish feed without containing neither probiotic nor prebiotic. In this study, test fish used monosex (all male) red tilapia with the average of body weight of 13,43±2,97 gram. The fish were fed by supplemented feed within first 30 days pre injection. After that, the treated fish were challenged by 109 CFU/ml of S. agalactiae. Nile tilapia fed by synbiotic (treatment E) had higher immune response (haemoglobin, neutrofil, and phagocyte indices) than control, but were not significantly different than those of treatment C, and D. After challenged test by S. agalactiae, treatment C, D and E resulted significantly higher resistance than that of control. The survival rate of fish fed by supplemented feed containing probiotic (C), prebiotic (D) and synbiotic (E) were 76%, 76% and 80%, respectively; higher than than positive control (50%). The results showed that addition of probiotic, prebiotic and synbiotic in fish feed could increase immune response and survival rate against S. agalactiae.Keywords : tilapia, probiotic, prebiotic, synbiotic, Streptococcus agalactiae

Abstract

Synthetic steroids are commonly used to sex-reverse tilapia to produce male tilapia commercially, but gradually feared a negative impact on food security and environmental sustainability. The use of new natural compound is a potential alternative to be explored, one of which is bull testes meal extract (BTME). This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of BTME immersion and optimal concentrations for sex-reverse tilapia to produce monosex male tilapia, and its influence on survival and growth of fish. The study consisted of 5 treatments with 3 replications: immersion treatment with BTME concentration of 1 ml l-1 (A), 3 ml l-1 (B), 5 ml l-1 (C), immersion treatment in 17α-methyltestosterone of 500 µg l-1 (K+) and without hormone immersion treatment (K-). Hormone immersion was performed on tilapia larvae aged 4 and 7 days after hatching.The fish were then maintained for 60 days. The parameters observed were: the percentage of male tilapia and intersex tilapia, survival rates, and growth rate of fish. BTME immersion for sex-reverse the tilapia larvae have significant effect on masculinization of tilapia. The highest percentage of male fish was obtained on treatment C (85.56%) and was not significantly different from K (+) (81.11 %). Immersion of tilapia in BTME or 17α-MT did not affect the survival and growth of tilapia fish.Keywords: sex reversal, bull testes meal extract (BTME), tilapia

Abstract

The main objective of this research was to to prolong the shelf life of beef meatball by using chitosan with the addition of garlic extract. Two methods of application, i.e. as preservative agent by mixing chitosan with meatball ingredients and as coating of meatball have been conducted. Prior to application, antimicrobial activities of chitosan and chitosan enriched with garlic extract were assessed by diffusion agar methods. It showed that chitosan solution of 1% (w/v) enriched with garlic extract 2% (v/v) could inhibit Pseudomonas aureginosa and Bacillus cereus.The application of chitosan enriched with garlic extract as preservative agent could extend the shelf-life of meatball only for 12 hours while its application as edible coating could extend the shelf life of beef meatball until 24 hours when stored at room temperature. This result revealed that the application of chitosan with garlic extract as edible coating were more effective in controlling microbiological growth in meatball than as preservative agent. The micrograph obtained by SEM showed that the surfaces of meatball coated with chitosan were more smooth and compact than those of meatball without coatings.Keywords: chitosan, antimicrobial film, preservative, meatball, edible coating

Abstract

Copolymerization of cellulose from rice straw with acrylic acid and acrylamide produce biopolymer superabsorbent. Cellulose was purified from fat content by extraction with toluene:ethanol (2:1). Hemicelluloses and lignin were removal by using potassium hydroxide 5% and hydrogen peroxide 2% at alkaline pH. Cellulose yield obtained was 21.56%. FTIR spectra of lignin showed a loss of absorption at 1728 cm-1. Copolymerization was carried out at 65 C under nitrogen athmosphere. Initiator and cross linking agent used were potassium peroxodisulfate and N'N-methylene bis acrylamide. Superbasorben resulted from this experiment showed the water swelling capacity after 24 hour for the water, solution of 100 ppm of ammonium chloride, and urea respectively 387,11 g/g ; 193,47 g/g and 400,17 g/g.Keywords : superabsorbent, rice straw, swelling capacity

Abstract

The process of making biodiesel made of palm oil produced as a by-product of glycerol with low purity levels, liquids, viscous blackish brown with a very alkaline pH (pH >10). Glycerol is often referred to as crude glycerol. The process of refining glycerol that is by adding phosphoric acid concentration range. The average value of the levels of glycerol from glycerol purification results on the phosphoric acid concentration of 2.5%, 5% and 7.5% (v/v) i.e. 81.2205%, 83.4609% and 80.7595%. Determination of the levels of glycerol results showed samples of glycerol rough after the addition of phosphoric acid with different concentrations of already existing standards. The result analysis of glycerol after purification by the addition of phosphoric acid at concentrations of 5% is most suitable for the process of improving  the purity of glycerol.Keywords: crude glycerol, purification, phosphate acid, glycerol content
