Abstract

Abstract: This study aimed to analyze the correlation between the habit of watching preaching videos on YouTube and the rhetorical skills of Indonesian Language Education students at the graduate school of Universitas Muhammadiyah Prof. Dr. Hamka (UHAMKA). A quantitative method with univariate-bivariate analysis was employed. The results showed that p-value (0.251) was bigger than alpha (0.05), hence H0 was accepted. These figures indicated that there was no significant correlation between the habit of watching preaching videos and the graduate students’ rhetorical skills. The odds ratio (OP) value of 0.381 within the range of 0.103-1.410 also suggested that the habit of watching preaching videos on YouTube had a power potential of 0-1 against rhetorical skills, which is categorized as low. The conclusion of this study is that while observing sermon videos does not directly enhance rhetorical skills, graduate students still need to focus on intensive training and continuous practice to improve their public speaking abilities because it will be beneficial to support their academic career. Keywords: preaching videos, rhetoric, graduate students.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v14.i1.202422

Abstract

Abstract: Students' Conjectures on Open Classical Analogy Problem: Expanding or Narrowing?. Objectives: This study aims to describe students' mathematical conjecture in the context of open classical analogy problem. Methods: This descriptive research describes students' conjectural profiles using open classical analogies. Data were collected from the responses of 68 students. Data analyzed using constructor example, process, and quality of the conjecture. Findings: Results show that the example of constructing the conjecture has not paid attention to all possible cases, while the process of the conjecture used by students was from simple to more expanding or narrowing. Some of the proposed conjecture quality does not include the necessary constraints, and some include unnecessary limitations. Students can add to statements that sharpen the conjecture proposed previously. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that in the construction of conjectures in the context of an open classical analogy, students involve their critical thinking skills. Keywords: conjecture, example, open classical analogy, process, quality of conjecture.  DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v14.i1.202419

Abstract

Abstract: Incorporating Gamified Elements into Mobile Learning to Enhance Critical Thinking Skills. Objective: This study explores the potential of gamified mobile learning in fostering critical thinking skills among learners. The objective is to investigate how gamified learning environments can provide engaging challenges, opportunities for decision-making, constructive feedback, collaborative experiences, adaptive pathways, and immersive narratives to promote the development of critical thinking skills.  Methods: The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach to explore how gamified learning environments influence the development of critical thinking skills. This method aimed to express experiences, perceptions, and behaviors within their natural context. It was informed by a review of existing literature on gamified learning and critical thinking, establishing a theoretical framework and grounding the research in established theories and findings. Thematic analysis was used to identify patterns and themes in the data, which were then integrated with relevant literature to gain comprehensive insights into the relationship between gamified learning and critical thinking. Findings: The findings suggest that gamified mobile learning can indeed be a powerful tool for fostering critical thinking skills. By harnessing the motivational power of games, educators can create dynamic learning environments that inspire learners to think critically, solve problems, and achieve deeper understanding. Gamified challenges, decision-making scenarios, collaborative experiences, adaptive pathways, and immersive narratives provide learners with meaningful learning experiences that promote active engagement and reflection. Conclusion: Overall, gamified mobile learning has the potential to revolutionize education by cultivating the skills and dispositions necessary for success in the 21st century. Keywords: critical thinking skills, education, gamified learning, thematic analysis.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v14.i1.202418

Objectives: Within the ongoing process of globalization, intercultural communication has been identified as one of the key competences of the 21st century. In the context of Primary Education, intercultural communication can be defined as the “ability to communicate effectively and appropriately in intercultural situations based on one’s intercultural knowledge, skills, and attitudes” (Deardorff, 2006).  Methods: The design of this research is Research and Development (R D) by using 4D (Define, Design, Develop and Disseminate. There are two kinds of questionnaire that will be used in the Define step, they are: (1) needs analysis questionnaire, and (2) expert judgment questionnaire. Findings:  The needs analysis questionnaire is distributed to the English teachers in Primary Education to identify the target needs and the learning needs of the students. The expert judgment questionnaire is used to evaluate the Dialogic Reading material. The data from the needs analysis questionnaire will be analyzed using frequency and percentage and the results are then will be used as the basis to design and develop the materials, while the data from the expert judgment questionnaire were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Conclusion: The integration of intercultural contents with dialogic reading with CROWD questions formula is good online material that can boost primary school students to learn English better. It is recommended that further researcher can create another topic of Dialogic Reading which is more up to date, interesting in its’ illustration or pictures and more advance in the digital technology, for example in the form of 3 or 4-dimensional animation.   Keywords: intercultural communication, dialogic reading, english for young learners.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v14.i1.202425
