Abstract

The idea of nationalism cannot be universalized, proven by Hans Kohn’s framework on Civic and Ethnic nationalism. Applying Hans Kohn’s framework on nationalism, this study examines the act of nationalism reflected in Walt Whitman’s “Song of Myself” (1855) and Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things (1997). This study uses qualitative research method by employing three steps in interpreting the data; describing, analysing, and deriving a conclusion. This study finds out that first, Whitman’s “Song of Myself” (1855) glorifies individual journey and struggle in uniting the whole members of the nation. Second, Roy’s The God of Small Things (1997) highlights the collective cultural identity as a form of rejection to colonial supremacy. Due to the controversy of Hans Kohn’s framework on nationalism, the contextualization of the writer’s background and social history of the works is needed.

Abstract

The theory of genetic structuralism appears as a theory with a broad scope because it considers aspects outside the text. This breadth of coverage is often considered a problem in studying genetic structuralism, especially in the practice of studying prose in universities. However, the theory of genetic structuralism can be operated more simply, while still taking into account the limitations given by Goldmann. It was this simplification idea that prompted the preparation of the teaching material "Understanding Genetic Structuralism: An Overview of Okky Madasari's Short Stories" as a guide that students can use in studying the theory of genetic structuralism more practically. In carrying out this research, Borg & Gall's Research & Development method was applied by taking into account the theoretical principles of genetic structuralism as the main content in the prepared teaching materials. This research was conducted in 10 stages as follows: (1) analysis of potential problems; (2) preliminary study; (3) data collection in the form of higher education curriculum analysis and literature study; (4) preparation of teaching materials; (5) design of teaching materials; (6) validation of teaching materials; (7) testing of teaching materials in the form of small and large scale trials; (8) final product; (9) calculation of the feasibility of teaching materials in its application in tertiary institutions. The result achieved based on this research is the compilation of genetic structuralism teaching materials for the study of prose in universities. The attractiveness aspect of the two product test locations got an average score of 89,05, the ease of use aspect got an average score of 89.15, and the usability aspect got an average score of 89,04, so the overall average score was 89,01. Based on this percentage, it can be concluded that the genetic structuralism teaching materials designed have been appropriate to be applied in the study of literature in universities.

Abstract

This research was conducted due to the rampant use of Javanese language that is not right among elementary school students. The purpose of this study is to find out the existence of Javanese language towards the character education of students in elementary school era society 5.o as well as the factors that influence it. The research method used is a case study with a qualitative approach. The population is all students and teachers of elementary schools on the island of Java, while the sample includes 2 teachers and 51 high-class students in two elementary schools in Blitar Regency, one favorite school in the lowlands and another school that is less desirable in mountainous areas. Data collection techniques use observation, questionnaires, and interviews. Data analysis techniques use percentages for questionnaires and coding for interview results. Based on the results of research, the existence of Javanese language towards elementary school students in Blitar Regency is still low. Almost all respondents mixed Krama language with Ngoko language, both Ngoko Lugu and Ngoko Alus in speaking with parents, even some of whom still mix it with Indonesian. This affects the character that students have. Factors that affect this condition are the assistance of parents and families, the uptake of other languages from the environment, and the school that pays less attention to the mastery of Javanese language to students.

Abstract

This study examines the code-mixing in a podcast from Mr. D's YouTube channel. It was chosen because code-mixing is very important for everyone, especially for people who live in a multilingual society. Sometimes they need multiple languages to talk to other people around them. Some of them replace or mix their mother tongue with their foreign or second language. This phenomenon occurs on the Podcast on Mr. D's Youtube channel. Qualitative methods are used to describe and explain the phenomenon of code-mixing in Mr. D's Podcast. The researcher is primarily an instrument for collecting and analyzing data. The results showed that the types of code-mixing are classified as intra sentential code-mixing, inter lexical code-mixing, and involving a change in pronunciation. The levels of code-mixing are classified as word level, phrase, baster, repetition, idiom, and clause level. Using code-mixing is to look more prestigious and make it easier for the speaker when it is difficult to find words in other languages. Finally, the affective functions of code-mixing are serving quotes, marking personalization and objectification, qualifying and clarifying messages, and determining recipients.
