Abstract

Effects of health facility ownership and type of providers on contraception discontinuation: an analysis of 2012 Indonesian demographic health surveyPurposeThis study aimed to examine the role of source of family planning services and types of providers on the discontinuity pattern of modern contraceptive use in women of childbearing age.MethodsThis study analyzed the longitudinal data using secondary data of the IDHS 2012. The sample criteria were: women ever married, aged 15-49, who have ever used modern contraception (pills, injections, IUDs and implants). Stratified Cox models were used to assess the effect of predictors toward contraceptive discontinuation.ResultsKaplan-Meier curves showed higher discontinuity in the short-term contraceptive methods such as injections and pills. Multivariable analysis showed the influence of method source to discontinuation after controlling for other factors, namely age, number of children, education level and place of residence. The risk of discontinuation was greater in government source than private, with HR 1.14 95% CI (1.06 to 1.23). Sub-sample analysis of private services showed a greater chance of discontinuity in physician, with HR 1.28 95% CI (1.06 to 1.54).ConclusionContraceptive discontinuation rate was lower among women using private source and midwives. Women with older age had greater number of children, and the factor of low education levels also was associated with longer duration of contraceptive use.

Abstract

Pattern of concurrent infection of dengue virus serotype in the regional study areas of Yogyakarta Center for Environmental Health and Diseases Control: an analysis of  2013-2015 dataPurposeThis study aimed to determine the pattern in the spread of infection rates with dengue viral serotypes.MethodsThe study was a descriptive research with spatial mapping methods. Data of 132 respondents were collected based on RT-PCR in 2013-2015. The complete address of the village-level patient from the dengue arbovirosis surveillance data of the Center for Environmental Health and Diseases Control Yogyakarta were used to determine the coordinate points with utilization of RBI and Google Earth maps in searching addresses for distribution of case coordinate points. ResultsThere were similarities with the most complex quadruple joint infection rates of DEN in Semarang and Yogjakarta, while Kebumen obtained double DEN level. Three patterns of infection with DEN-1 and DEN-3 have p-value < 0.05 in Semarang in 2014, Sragen in 2015 and Semarang 2013 and 2 patterns in Gunung Kidul 2014 and Kulon Progo 2015. The patterns of infection with DEN-1, DEN-2 and DEN-3 in 2015 were covering Sragen and Semarang in 2013.ConclusionThe most complex areas of infection were Semarang and Yogyakarta. The pattern of most likely cluster infection with DEN-1 and DEN-3 and DEN-1, DEN-2 and DEN-3 allegedly was a result of two infected patients, different serotypes of different mosquitoes or infection of more than one serotype of Ae. aegypti or Ae. albopictus as the main vector.

Management commitment, occupational safety and health knowledge and behavior, and work accidents among nurses in a private hospital in YogyakartaPurposeThis study aimed to determine the relationship between management commitment, knowledge and behavior of occupational safety and health on nursing work accidents in RS PKU Muhammadiyah. MethodsThis cross-sectional study involved 73 nurses as research subjects. Data were analyzed using simple and multiple linear regression tests. ResultsThere was a significant negative relationship between each variable of management commitment, safety and health knowledge, safety and health behavior, and occupational accidents. When analyzed collectively there was a strong relationship between management commitment, knowledge and behavior of occupational safety and health and occupational accidents. ConclusionThis study suggests that the management of PKU Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta hospital can maintain the results achieved in the prevention of occupational accidents, increase supervision of hazard factors that may occur in the workplace, incorporate aspects of occupational safety and health in each Standard Operating Procedure, and post written rules of occupational safety and health in each work area. Abstract

What do MPH student theses tell us? Experience from Universitas Gadjah MadaPuposeThis study aimed to evaluate MPH professional performance through thesis writing. MethodWe review 103 MPH student theses in health policy and management tract from data library of Faculty of Medicine Universitas Gadjah Mada since 2013 to 2015. We extract topic and reference from each thesis with a questionnaire.ResultsSeventy percent of students choose subject relevant to health policy and management tract. Sixty percent of theses are located in quadrant 3 because they have relevant topic but weak on use of appropriate reference. Only several journals in health policy and management are cited in theses such as health policy and planning, health policy, BMC health services research and human resources for health. More references related to other multidisciplines and published over 5 years. ConclusionMPH students are in need of clear understanding of the domain and scope of work they are interested in. Their theses showed limited evidence about references focus that has practical relevance to their future work or to the job they currently have.
