Abstract

In his multiple intelligence theory, Gardner (1993) sought to extend the capacity of human potential beyond the frame of the IQ score. Moreover, Gardner has grouped the capabilities into eight categories or intelligences. Those ntelligences are linguistic intelligences, logicalmathematical intelligences, spatial intelligences, bodily-kinesthetic intelligence, musical intelligence, interpersonal intelligence, intrapersonal intelligence and the last one is naturalistic intelligence (Amstrong, 2002:2). According to Campbell’s experiences above, the writer is interested to investigate the Multiple Intelligences theory as teaching model especially in teaching basics English to children. All people posses all intelligences at varying levels, it is helpful for teachers to present content material through a variety of intelligences to make the information comprehensible to all learners.

Abstract

Commonly, a good student equals good academic achievement. General people tend to associate good students with only excellence in academics. But in reality, another attribute will come up when people stated the definition of a good student. To make a clearer concept of a good student, finding another supporting attribute is needed. This present study aims to identify other attributes as a good student as perceive by the teacher. The teacher’s perspective is chosen because students first acquaint and the first observer is their teacher. Teachers’ perspectives such as teacher’s beliefs, opinions, and concerns are compiled as the source and obtained using interviews with semi- structured questions. Fifteen available teachers from different school levels and ages from 25 to 56 years old involved using convenience sampling in this study. The result of this study showed that teachers define a good student into four aspects or categories. The first is seeing from their academic skill, the second is dependent on the students’ personality, the third is their proficiencies and the last category is from the reflection. A surprising fact, teachers’ experiences, ages, and levels didn’t much influence their perspectives. Meanwhile, teachers’ gender affected their perspectives to define a good student.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the significant different about video and audio in students’ listening practices. This research employed a comparative research design with two group pretest and post-test design. There were two variables: independent variable was video and audio and the dependent variable was the students’ listening practices. Population of this study research was 64 students and the samples were 30 students. In collecting the data, the researcher used listening test. Based on the finding of the research, the conclusions can be explained that the first and the second test has different topic and both test has different result of hypothesis testing, which in the first test that discussed the topic about some dialogues and conversations, the t-test value was 13.00 and t-table for n = 58 in level of significant α = 0.05 was 2.00. Because of t-test > t-table (13.15 > 2.00), it means that there is a significant difference between the students listening comprehension by using video and audio. Meanwhile in the second test which discussed the topic from cut movie, the t-test value was -10.15 and t-table was 2.00. Because of t-test < t-table (-10.15 < 2.00), it means that there is not a significant difference between the students listening comprehension by using video and audio. The result of this research shows that video is a better media than audio to be applied on student listening comprehension, therefore the implementation of this research expects the teachers/ lecturers to use video as learning media in teaching listening especially in listening comprehension.
