Abstract

The process of conveying meaning between two languages is called translation. This qualitative research study aims to depict changes in form and meaning during the translation of subtitles from the Korean variety show "Battle Trip (배틀 트립) episode 14," titled "Trip to Bandung," as it transitions from Korean to Indonesian. Additionally, this study delves into the underlying factors that contribute to these translation shifts. This research used a theory of translation shift and translation meaning shift. The data were collected by jotting down the phrases, clauses, or sentences in the subtitles that contained form and meaning shifts and classifying them into an analysis table, based on the type of translation shift. The results showed that from 147 units of analysis, there were 167 translation shifts. Almost all types of form shifts were found in this study. The most commonly occurring type of translation shift was category shifts, especially the structure and unit shifts. This was due to the differences in grammatical rules, sentence structure, and language units between the Korean and Indonesian languages. Meanwhile, the concept of meaning shift is categorized into two distinct groups: generic-to-specific transitions and shifts stemming from divergent cultural perspectives. The most dominant meaning shift was the generic-to-specific category because the translator used equivalents that were not too close but the meaning conveyed did not change. In addition, the difficulties in finding the close equivalents due to the differences in the cultural background were another factor in the occurrences of translation shifts.

Abstract

Korean society, to this day, generally still applies Confucian principles  in its discourse. Confucian principles in speech are expressed through the use of politeness in language This research conducted to determine how the Korean honorific system is used in the family-themed K-POP (Korean Pop) song lyrics and the factors that influence such use. This research was designed as a qualitative study. The data were collected by using a document analysis technique. Meanwhile, the data analyzed by using a linguistic data analysis technique, with reference to Kang, et al.’s (2005) Korean honorific system theory and Lee’s (2002) theory of social factors that influence the application of the Korean honorific system. This research resulted in 38 Korean honorific system expressions. The most commonly used Korean honorific system type is, namely, the honorific vocabulary. Because songwriters often used vocabulary in the form of honorifics, where the vocabulary was a pronoun to mention the characters in the lyrics of the song. The use of the Korean honorific system was influenced by various factors, including age, social status, intimacy, and context. While the gender factor was not found, this is likely due to the speaker and the addressee having different ages and social status.

Abstract

In 1757, Crown Prince Hyojang, son of King Yeongjo, suffered from a severe anxiety disorder. This illness can be seen in the movie Sado by Lee Jeon-ik released in 2015. The main character of the movie Sado is a representative of Prince Hyojang, who is described as experiencing anxiety which puts pressure on his father. Therefore, this study explores why they implement defense mechanisms against anxiety experienced by individuals. Driven by these problems, this research through literature focuses on two problems; how anxiety is shown by Hyojang's character in the movie Sado and how the defense mechanism is shown by Hyojang's character in the movie Sado. This research is qualitative research using descriptive methods with a literature psychology approach and psychoanalytic theory developed by Freud. The results of this research are as follows; First, the main character Hyojang in the movie Sado experiences three forms of anxiety which are realistic anxiety, neurotic anxiety, and moral anxiety; Second, Hyojang’s subconsciousness is described as carrying out three forms of defense mechanisms that are displacement, reaction formation, and repression.

Abstract

Various challenges arose since the learning process in universities was carried out online due to the COVID-19 pandemic that hit the whole world. In order to have speaking and writing skills which are included as productive skills in language, students should do a lot of activities in the classroom directly by interacting a lot with both lecturers and other students. Korean Speaking and Writing course which must be carried out online without much time for preparation beforehand causes lecturers and students to experience difficulties at the beginning of online lectures. Therefore, this research was conducted to find out how Korean Speaking and Writing learning is carried out online, how students' perspectives on online learning take place, and what challenges students face when studying Korean Speaking and Writing online. This research is a qualitative descriptive study conducted at the Korean Language Education Study Program, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, focusing on second-year students. Through this research, it can be seen that: 1) Lecturers are quite good at teaching online by holding classes asynchronously using Google Classroom and synchronously with the Zoom application; 2) Students are of the view that online learning has its own advantages and disadvantages; 3) The challenges that arise from online Korean Speaking and Writing learning are the lack of self-motivation to study independently, external challenges in the form of a bad internet network, and difficulties in producing texts that are in accordance with Korean language rules.

Abstract

The language style is prominently showcased within advertising slogans. They can deliver meaningful messages by captivating the viewers. Therefore, this research discusses the language style and the semantic meaning contained in the Korean language tourism advertising slogans on a YouTube channel. This research aims to find out how language style and semantic meaning are manifested in Korean tourism advertising slogans. The research object was the Korean tourism advertisement based on the main components of tourism aired through YouTube channels in 2014-2021. The research variables were the language and semantic meaning manifested on the Korean tourism advertising slogans. This research used a qualitative descriptive method through observation technique to obtain the data, particularly involving listening and note-taking techniques. The data were analyzed by using interactive and referential techniques. This research used Jang and Kim’s language style theory and Leech’s semantic meaning theory. The results showed that there were twelve types of language styles found in Korean language tourism advertising slogans. The most common language style was personification. The purpose of personification was to make the advertising slogan much more live and more beautiful so that it can be easier to remember. Moreover, the results revealed that there were 25 connotative meanings and 25 denotative meanings in the Korean tourism advertising slogans. Denotative meaning could convince consumers with the actual facts. Connotative could attract the consumers’ attention with eloquent words without reducing the value of the products offered.
