Abstract

Abstract

The representation of cultural values in textbooks is crucial to be examined because learning a foreign language is bound with the culture. Although previous research has quite extensively investigated this issue, much is yet to be explored in the context of Korean as a foreign language learning. This study aims to address the gap by investigating how cultural values are represented in the Korean as a foreign language (KFL) textbook, published by The Korea Foundation for Indonesians. A critical discourse analysis (CDA) approach was employed to analyze the data. The findings exhibited the representation of cultural values in four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The introduction to the Korean language could be given through cultural recognition. Among the identified cultural values in the textbook, the representation of showing respect to creative products or the results of local culture was more evident than the other categories, followed by showing respect to cultural differences from various ethnic or religious groups and merging with nature and life. However, the representation category of showing respect to indigenous people’s culture was not seen in the textbook. This suggests that the textbook is intended to foster the students’ multicultural awareness in learning Korean as a foreign language.

Abstract

Previous literature has articulated the contributing role of personality more than teaching competence to be an effective EFL teacher. However, the ideal qualities of an effective EFL teacher in a technology-enhanced flipped English classroom are not much revealed. This paper seeks to compare the ideal teacher’s attitudes and teaching styles with the teacher’s actual practices in a technology-enhanced flipped English classroom from the students’ perceptions. Eighty-three Indonesian undergraduate EFL students majoring in information technology participated in this research. A questionnaire with a checklist and open-ended items was filled out after the students accomplished a 16-week English course. The results showed that an effective EFL teacher in a technology-enhanced flipped English classroom should possess and exemplify the attitudes of patience, friendliness, and niceness, as perceived by the students. Most students also envisaged that an effective EFL teacher in such a learning context can use various, innovative, easy-to-follow methods and employ English and Indonesian alternately. The realities generally accorded with the students’ expectations. More students favored the use of various kinds of instructional technology by the teacher. However, the teacher was less favored for being too serious, not being open to students, giving unclear instructions for doing the assignments, and giving less guidance to use the educational technology

Abstract

This study was conducted to fulfill the need of students to understand linguistics courses in the Korean Language Education Study Program. The student’s understanding of linguistics starts from their ability to understand the linguistic terms. This study deals with the formation of linguistic terms in Korean language compared to their formation in Indonesian language. It is necessary to analyze Indonesian terms’ formation to find their equivalent terms. It is found that Korean linguistic terms are generally changed into Indonesian as a whole. Although some terms originate from foreign languages, the majority have undergone adaptation and adjustments to be more comprehensible. In contrast, Indonesian linguistic terms are influenced by their source language. Meanwhile, Indonesian linguistic terms are influenced by the language of origin. The formation of terms is also analyzed based on the word formation process by using morphological theory to determine the formation pattern. This research may answer the function of these terms in the process of understanding linguistics lectures at the Korean Language Education Study Program, FPBS, UPI.

Abstract

This study aims to assess the application of cognitive processing dimensions to the enrichment questions in the Korean book entitled 아하 한국어 2/Aha Hanguko 2 which contains 141 questions in 12 chapters. The cognitive process dimension is divided into six levels with two categories, namely lower order thinking skills and higher order thinking skills. The method used in this research is qualitative by using textual analysis. The results of the research in the book are that the enrichment questions do not yet contain all levels of cognitive process dimensions because there are no questions at the C5 - Evaluation level. However, there are still questions with other higher order thinking skills categories, namely levels C4 - Analysis and C6 - Creating. The enrichment questions are still dominated by the level C2 - Understanding which is a category of lower order thinking skills. Based on the results of the research, it can be seen that the book does not contain enrichment questions with the level of dimensions of cognitive processes that are included in the category of higher order thinking skills optimally. This can have an impact on the lack of sharpening of students' critical thinking skills.

Abstract

The ubiquitous presence of mobile devices has benefited the implementation of foreign language learning through Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL). Previous research highlights the portability aspect of mobile devices such as smartphones that can lead to spontaneous, flexible, and personalized learning activities. However, challenges remain; particularly the connectivity issues. The present study seeks to continue the discussion by investigating 79 Indonesian undergraduate students’ experiences and perceptions of MALL in their Korean language classes. The data were obtained by distributing a questionnaire to the students. The validity and reliability coefficients were also measured. Interview sessions were conducted afterward with eleven students to dig for further explanations. The results demonstrate that most students used smartphones for sending messages to peers, checking notifications, accessing materials, submitting their work, and sending messages to lecturers. Regarding the applications used, they frequently utilized smartphones for accessing Google Classroom, Zoom, and WhatsApp during their Korean classes. The results also revealed that while they perceived MALL as useful and flexible for learning Korean toward increased language skills, motivation, autonomy, and critical thinking, technical problems, and connectivity issues remain to be the main challenges. This study discusses some concerns in implementing MALL and its implications for future research.

Abstract

In August 2018, Indonesia hosted the Asian Games Jakarta – Palembang 2018. After hosting in 1962, Indonesia has had the theme "Asia's Energy", meaning that Indonesia is expected to be a source of energy support for some Asian countries on the world stage. The study aimed to discover the similarities and differences shown on the articles and how Indonesia is represented through lexicon, grammar, discourse practices, grammar, and discourse practices in online news articles written by the Korean Republic’s media. This study used a critical discourse analysis theory of Norman Fairclough with a descriptive qualitative method, developing critical discourse analysis based on formal-systemic linguistic assumptions. Based on the study results, it is observed that the published news articles during the opening were the articles giving a primary focus on Indonesia compared to the published articles during the event and closing, data was collected based on online news articles during the 2018 Jakarta Palembang Asian Games using a literature study of 15 articles. There is also a finding regarding text production in articles of Asian Games Jakarta-Palembang 2018 that were not influenced by outside intervention other than the media itself. Then, based on the text analysis results, it is discovered that Indonesian representations were divided into the viewpoint of a country and the viewpoint of the host of the Asian Games Jakarta Palembang 2018. In addition, the implications of this research are to find out Indonesia’s representation in the news media of the Republic of Korea during the 2018 Asian Games.
