Abstract

Abstract: The impacts of the great debate on early reading instruction, which was started in the late 1960 and early 1970s, remain until today. In our education system, curriculum change also brings about the change of teaching ideology. For teachers, the result sometimes is more threatening than encouraging because they cannot anticipate the quick and inevitable change. They become disempowered and deprived, and that innovation is often difficult to implement. This study aimed to explore the orientation of student teachers and experienced teachers towards reading instruction, namely phonic, skills, and whole language approach. This involved 30 primary student teachers of an Institute of Education in London and 30 experienced teachers teaching at Year 1 and 2 London inner city primary schools. Each of the respondents was sent a questionnaire, and asked to answer an open ended question concerning the best approach of teaching reading. The results revealed that in general there was no difference in teaching reading orientation between student teachers and experienced teachers. Both of them tend to believe that there was no single best method. The competing approaches are seen as complementary. Any approach chosen should take into account child development, the nature of reading and environmental support. The implications of these findings for teacher empowerment are discussed.

Abstract

In Indonesian Great Dictionary, both of the words “angry” and “hate” are more or less defined as something uneasy. This definition has actually aroused over- whelming question for in daily use the two words seem to be different. How differ- ent they are can be answered by using the reference of prototype theory which will be applied on the abstract concept for the characteristics of the two words. In this study, the respondents are 42 students of the eight semester of English Depart- ment, UPI. They are presented with open questions to identify the kinds of proto- type and its cognitive model. In addition, they are expected to evaluate the best attribute for the words angry and hate. The result shows that the word “angry” can be physiologically and psychologically identified, while another word, “hate” can only be psychologically identified. Moreover, there is family relateness in their cognitive model. This fact influences the implicit meaning of the two words in the current dictionary. Key words: prototype theory, cognitive model, dan konsep abstrak.

Abstract

The level of scientific publications of Indonesian students at the international level is still very minimal. Even when compared to Malaysia and Thailand, Indonesia is still lagging behind. The Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education targets that in 2019 Indonesia will reach 30,000 international publications. Therefore, students' interest in writing must be increased, especially writing based on sources. Therefore, this study would like to find students' perspectives and perceived challenges in writing based on sources. This research was based on a case study.  The research involved 68 students from one of the state universities in Bandung, and it analyzed 20 selected scientific papers written by students. The instruments for data collection included questionnaire and observation. The results of this study found that 59% of students perceived that writing scientific papers is very difficult. The students found it difficult to find suitable sources for writing material and develop their ideas. They tended to use articles as the sources from the internet whose originality is unclear. One reason this happens was because 80% of students did not know where to find or get indexed journals to use as references for their writing. In addition, many students also preferred not to use journals that were majorly English-based because of their limitation of English skills. The implication is that students should be given further understanding of how to access journals and use reference sources in writing. It is expected that every lecturer will give more source-based writing assignments so that the ability of students to write and develop ideas based on existing sources can be further improved.

Abstract

Considered important for global competitiveness like ASEAN Economic Society, the English proficiency of Indonesian students is unfortunately not satisfactory yet. This condition is, one of which, due to low teachers’ professionalism and students’ motivation for English learning. The motivation of students may become weak because they have not found ways to identify, drive and sustain it. Of the various studies on motivation and challenges in EFL practice in the Indonesian context, research specifically addressing how learners find motivation triggers synergized into project-based learning for sustainable and continuous English learning is still limited. This survey and interview study investigates the motivation of Senior High School (SHS) students in West Java province of Indonesia on English learning and how to drive their motivation through a collaborative project as mandated by the 2013 National Curriculum. Results of questionnaires, interviews and document analysis show that despite having integrative and instrumental motivation to learn English, the participating SHS students show low investment as indicated by low learning enthusiasm in the classroom and poor English performance. This low motivation is also related to some socioeconomic status such as school geographical location, classroom learning situation, and parental supports. The study recommends students’ involvement in a cooperative learning project which can direct and energize their English learning motivation so that they can have increased motivation, good English proficiency and become global citizens with high competitiveness.

Abstract

Abstract: In the past few years, game shows such as Take Me Out Indonesia were quite popular in Indonesian television. These game shows were quite interesting to study because they were not only involving many participants, but also requiring the settings in which politeness and implicature needed to be used to keep the communication flows smoothly. This paper is a pragmatic study that aims at investigating conversational implicature that the presenters of Take Me Out Indonesia operate within their utterances along with the possible implications that lie behind the implicature[AJ1] . The episode XXII of the show was chosen purposively as the sample. Qualitative method was employed in processing the transcription of the 204 recorded implicature data. The intended features were identified, classified, calculated and then separately analyzed based on conversational implicature theory proposed by Grice (1975). The result shows that the presenters tended to use generalized conversational implicature (59, 8%) rather than the particularized (40,2%). Based on the functions, inferences or motive it contains, generalized conversational implicature can be classified into ten categories implying: (1) the presence of the opposition, (2) the invalidity of the expressions or events at the time of speaking, (3) “not all”, (4) events that have not yet occured, (5) the actual position, (6) persons or things having similararity, (7) “not completely”, (8) further actions, (9) the others of the similar kind, and (10) the opposite of the real situations. The needed inferences fall into two classifications: (1) the show’s settings inferences and (2) general knowledge inferences. Based on the objectives, particularized implicatures are used to ensure: (1) the effectiveness of a polite criticism, (2) maximum efficiency of communication, (3) minimum degree of an imperative’s imposition, and (4) alleviation of other’s self offensiveness. This study concludes that various types of implicature were used in informal game show conversation to make interaction flows smoothly.   Key words: conversational implicature, maxims, inference, meanings, game show s.

Abstract

Exposure of environmental issues is essential to prevent mass environmental destructions; therefore, campaigns (posters) should be able to activate the viewers’ contemplation on such issues. The emergence of multimodal texts provides a vast opportunity for semioticians to do their analyses in a more creative manner in current communication processes. Accordingly, this study focuses on the interactive meanings of semiotic resources in posters on environmental campaigns using a multimodal perspective. It examines the contribution of visual and textual resources to raise people’s awareness on the significance of preserving the environment for future generations. This study drew upon analytical tools from SFL, social semiotics, and reading images (Bezemer Kress, 2008; Kress, 2011; Kress Van Leeuwen 1996; Martinec Salway, 2005).  This form of contemplation can be considered to be a part of an essential educational process to build a good character. This study shows that the sample posters are significant to represent and transfer environmental messages through these multimodal resources.

Abstract

Recent understanding as strongly believed by studies investigating the interactive or interpersonal meanings of images in such printed texts as textbooks and picturebooks shows that interpersonal relation can be established not only through verbal sentences as the primarily representational mode of our experiences but can also be represented through visual forms such as photographs and pictures. Further, studies on how meanings are represented through verbal and visual modes have revealed how readers’ experiences and readers’ social roles in relation to the content of the texts are constructed. The construction of readers’ social roles through the use of images in printed texts has been regarded to be parallel with how interactants’ social position is enacted in direct communication relying on the use of verbal sentences. In Indonesian contexts, however, studies on how verbal and visual modes represent experiences and construct social position of the interactants seem to be underexplored. The present study examined three Indonesian picturebooks using the perspectives of multimodality and reported how the children’s experiences were represented through the verbal and the visual modes used, and how these two semiotic resources represented the social relationship between the characters in the picturebook and the potential readers of the books. The examination of the verbal texts has been focused on the clauses as the building blocks of the texts by identifying the participants, process types, circumstances, and clause types. The examination of the pictures has been focused on such visual elements as who/what are in the picture, what activities taking place, the attributes possessed by the represented participants, and the circumstances. In addition, how the represented participants address the viewers was also examined. The results of the analysis show that ideationally the narrative is mostly centered around the activities done by and to children, which are presented as an offer to the readers. Verbally and visually the represented participants are socially equal to the children readers. The three picturebooks are excellent examples of picturebooks that present a narrative of Indonesian children designed for young readers because of their simple vocabulary, simply-constructed Indonesian grammar employed, and simple yet interesting plot they deal with.

Abstract

This study aims to present a mathematical linguistic analysis in establishing the relations between TRs, LMs, potential senses, and actual senses by using the case of the preposition on found in academic texts under the framework of Trajector (TR) and Landmark (LM) configurations. Data were corpora taken from 10 bachelor’s theses written by Indonesian students. To sort the data, Ant Conc 3.4.1.0 was used to parse clauses or sentences based on the TR-LM configurations. Based on the TR-LM configurations, a mathematical model was developed to discover how these variables are quantitatively related to the number of potential senses produced by using a geometric representation of TR and LM. This study indicates that the relation between TRs and LMs, on the one hand, and the sum of potential senses, on the other, follows the integral function of , which means that the total number of potential senses of Ps equals the integral of TR with respect to LM. Meanwhile, the total number of actual senses, ∑As can be obtained by the integral function of , which equals TR.LM + C where C is -Ls representing the constant of the number of lost senses. This mathematical modeling confirms that TR-LM configurations may be used to generate senses which prove the polysemous nature of prepositions.
