Abstract

This study focuses on students’ interest in English, and how it influences students’ achievement. The aim of this study is to figure out whether there is a correlation between students’ interest and their academic achievement in learning English. The number of the sample in this research are 87 students at the second grade of SMA Negeri 1 Tomohon. This study used quantitative research design which is non-experimental research. The data collected with questionnaire to obtain the information about students’ interest and students’ achievement in learning English. The questionnaire consists of 31 items divided into positive and negative statements. The items were tested with SPPS to determent the validity and the reliability of each items. The data was analysed by using the formula of Pearson Product Moment Correlation. It was found that the correlation score was 0.424. The significance value was 0.217 showed in the r table. The score of correlation 0.424 was higher than the significance value 0.217, means that the alternative hypothesis was accepted. Based on the result, it can be concluded that there was a positive correlation between students’ interest and their academic achievement in learning English. The researcher suggests that the case interest is very important particularly in affecting students’ achievement, therefore it must be improved.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the use of images can improve students' reading comprehension of descriptive text. This study was conducted at SMP Negeri 6 Manado. This study was quantitative study with one group pre-test and post-test as the design. The teaching method used for treatment was images. The population of this study consisted of 7 classes in the second grade, and the sample of this study consisted of VIII, and 25 students. They analyzed statistically, taking into account the average score of the test. The results of this study showed that the post-examination score was higher than the pre-examination. The average score for the post-test (T2) is 8,52 and the average score for the pre-test (T1) is 5. This shows that the use of diagrams improves the student's comprehension of the explanatory text. The results of can conclude that it is effective to use figures when teaching explanatory texts.

Abstract

This study aimed at identifying denotative and connotative meaning in English proverbs, in Solomon’s Proverbs in Proverbs 25, 26, and 28, King James Version. This study was conducted in order to explain the patterns of proverb that used on Solomon’s proverbs in Proverbs 25, 26, and 28, King James Version. In conducting this study, descriptive method were used. The data were collected through documentation, the writer spending times in reading and analysing the Solomon’s Proverbs in Proverbs 25, 26, and 28, King James Version and the files that in relation with this research. The data were analyzed by following step of unitization, categorization, explanation and interpretation. The result shows that there are 36 English proverbs that used patterns of proverbs by Mieder which are Better X than Y, Like X like Y, No X without Y, One X doesn’t make Y, If X than Y. It is suggested that understand the denotative and connotative meaning in reading English writing especially English Proverbs should be considered in order to get the real meaning that the author or speaker exactly means. Other researcher may conduct a study about denotative and connotative meaning with different point or object.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to reveal the effectiveness of using Kim’s memory game in increasing students’ vocabulary. This research was pre-experimental research using quantitative research with one group pre-test and post-test design. Population of this research were students of SMP Negeri 3 Kombi and the sample were VIII grade students in academic year 2019/2020 and the total number of the sample were 15 students. The data were collected through multiple choice test. The data of this research were analysed statistically using mean score formula X̅ . The result of the data analysis showed that the highest score in pre-test was 88 and the lowest was 40. The highest score in post-test was 96 and the lowest was 70. The mean score of pre-test was 65.33 and the mean score of post-test was 81.86. The improvement was 16.53 from the pre-test until the post-test. It was indicated that the used of Kim’s Memory game was effective to improve students’ Vocabulary.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to reveal the influence of the environment to Maggie’s behavior in Crane’s “Maggie: A Girl of the Streets”. In conducting this research in which the data are in the form of words rather than numbers. In analysing the data, the writer used objective and psychological approach. The data collected in this research from two sources, primary and secondary sources. Primary sources is Crane’s “Maggie: A Girl of the Street” and secondary sources are the other books and data from internet that related to this research. The result of this research shows that Maggie has a miserable life that caused by her bad environment. Caused by her family condition, her job, her neighbourhood, her love relationship with Pete, and all the problems that she has to face in everyday of her life. But the conditions make her depressed. At the end of the story, Maggie chooses a wrong decision. She kills herself.

Abstract

Sociolinguistics has a lot of aspects that can be researched. One of the aspects is slang. Slang is vocabulary that is used between people who belong to the same social group and who know each other well. Slang is very informal language. This research mainly discussed about slang in Geek Charming Movie. The purpose of this study is to identify the slangs and to describe the types of slang used in Geek Charming Movie. This study is limited to the main characters in the movie, they are Dylan Schoenfield and Josh Rosen.The  writer  used  descriptive qualitative  method  by using Bodgan and  Bilden (1992)   theory, which consists   of four steps: unitization, categorization, explanation, and interpretation. After analizing the data, it is found out that there are three types of slang used by Dylan Schoen field and Josh Rosen in Geek Charming Movie. The types of slang are public house slang, society slang, slangin public school and university.  Those  are  types  of  slang  according  to Eric Partridge (1950).It is important to study slang because the result of this research can be used for further research and help readers to get more knowledge about slang.

Abstract

This research was conducted to identify the forms of code mixing and to describe the social contexts where the youth it was conducted in Kiniar, one of the villages in Tondano used code mixing in their daily communication. Qualitative research design was used in this research. The data were collected in the form of words and phrases, not numbers. The data was taken based on participant observation. and the data were collected by taking note. This research used the theory of Siregar. The data were collected and analysed used the theory of Bogdan and Biklen. The results of this research showed that there are 4 codes used by youth in GMIM Tiberias Kiniar Church: Indonesia language, English language. Manado-Malay language and Toulour language. But Manado-Malay is dominantly used. The data were categorized into types of code mixing: Intra sentential mixing and Extra-sentential mixing. In relation to the result of the study, the researcher suggested that code mixing is not a barrier in communicating or saying something to people, but it may be considered as a useful strategy in communicating to people in formal or non-formal forum, cases, or situation, if the aim is to make clearer the meaning or the message of the speaker to the people or the audiences.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to find out whether using mind mapping technique can increase students' vocabulary or not. It was conducted at SMP N 2 Bitung. The subject in this study was Class V11-4, academic year 2017/2018, which consisted of 35 students. This research was a pre-experimental design with one group pre-test-post-test. Pre-test is the test which was given to the students before treatment to find out students' vocabulary stock. Post-test is the test which was given to the students to find out the students' achievement after treatment or teaching them by using mind mapping technique. The findings showed that the students' score in post-test were higher than the pre-test. The result of the data analysis revealed that the mean score of post-test (82) was higher than the pre-test (49). In addition the standard deviation of pre-test was slightly higher (7.05) than the standard deviation of post-test (5.71). This indicated that the use of mind mapping technique increased students' vocabulary.

Abstract

This research intends to depict the influences of Lady Macbeth to Macbeth downfall, and the effect of Lady Macbeth influences to Macbeth. In doing this research, the writer uses objective approach. Objective approach is used because primary source of this research is literary work, the drama Macbeth. However, the analysis of drama Macbeth is based on the writer analysis and interpretation in accordance with the fact and evidences found in drama. By the analysing the topic, it is found out that, the downfall of Macbeth not only caused by his own weakness but also bad influences of Lady Macbeth as a wife. The analysis shows that Lady Macbeth not only supports her husband to make the prophecy became true, but Lady Macbeth has controlled the mind set of Macbeth. Lady Macbeth influences her husband to did the crime in order the prophecy about Macbeth will be a king of Scotland became true. Finally, Lady Macbeth influences her husband to murder King Duncan. In the end, Macbeth cannot happy to all that He got, He fell guilt, unhappy and uncomfortable.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to reveal sacrifice in Meyer’s Breaking down. In conducting the study, the writer delimited this study only in reveling sacrifice in Meyer’s Breaking down. Bella focuses on the main character.  The research employs a descriptive qualitative method. It means that all of the data is in the form of words and sentences rather than numbers, and it focuses on the process that produces the results. After analyze the novel the writer may conclude that the kinds of Bella’s sacrifice can be formulated into three categories they are: Willing to stop her study and get married in the very young age, Willing to pregnant event it will endanger her life and the third willing to give up her life for her baby. These three types of sacrifice clearly describe in the novel. Finally, the suggestions are 1) Sacrifice is the very important things in human life, 2) Every relationship needs sacrifice to the sake of others life, 3) Sacrifice is a good moral act that important to become a lesson for everyone.
