Abstract

This study aims to discuss the Oke Saki ritual and how this ritual can be a means of instilling Catholic values among Manggarai Catholics themselves. The new understanding in the Catholic Church that recognizes that there are seeds of goodness and salvation in other religions and cultures makes the Church aware of the importance of rooting faith in local culture. This re[1]search uses a qualitative research method with an ethnographic design. Pri[1]mary data was collected from interview and observation. The concept of the Oke Saki ritual has similarities to the sacrament of confession, as both involve human efforts, repentance for sins and mistakes committed. How[1]ever, there are also significant differences, one of which is that Oke Saki emphasizes collective sin while Catholicism emphasizes personal sin and re[1]pentance. The Church cares about collective sin, but personal repentance should be prioritized. Because of this similarity, the Oke Saki ritual can be integrated with the liturgy of the sacrament of confession. However, further study is still needed due to different understandings. Efforts are needed to purify understandings that are contrary to faith, especially those that dis[1]credit God’s dominion over all of His creation. This is a way to root Catholic values in culture while preserving local cultural treasures.

Abstract

Currently, our world is experiencing an ecological crisis, and this can be seen in the polution of water, air and soil. It shows the fractured relationship between human beings and other creatures, in a way that it is not reciprocal, and in which human beings relinquishes his and her responsibilities to the nature and to the other creatures. Responding to this, through Laudato Si’, Pope Francis has called on attention to the ecological emergency. The Pope emphasized on the importance of a reciprocal relationship between the na[1]ture and human to reawaken our human ecological consciousness. However, the author finds that prior to the Church’s ecological appeal, the ecological awareness has already existed within the local Manggaraian culture, namely the roko molas poco. This paper aims at exploring the ecological meanings of the roko molas poco rite and its connection to the Laudato Si. The approach adopted by the authors is the qualitative-descriptive method by reading lit[1]eratures related to the topics discussed. From the study, the authors find that there is similarity in the meaning contained in the rite of roko molas poco and that in the Laudato Si’ appeal. Both have the same goal in improving and building our human ecological awareness. Thus, human ecological awareness can be revived by raising up the values that have already existed in local culture such as roko molas poco

Abstract

The focus of this study is to discuss “Understanding Catholic Mission from the Perspective of Manggarai Diaspora Students in Malang City, East Java. ”Mission work is a public duty and an obligation for all those who have been baptized. However, many people who have been baptized see missionary work as the sole responsibility of bishops, priests, nuns, brothers or nuns. This mindset makes other people feel they are not participating in carrying out the task, so they ignore it. Manggarai diaspora students are aware of their presence in a pluralistic society as a representation of the presence of the Church. They are present not only seeking knowledge, but also trying to be witnesses of Christ in their own style and way. This study has the objective of how far the Manggarai diaspora students have realized the work of mission in the midst of a pluralistic society in the city of Malang. The methodology used is phenomenology from the reality of the daily experiences of Manggarai diaspora students. This study found, first, the students had taken part in mission work in their own way. Second, we need to have skills about the local culture. Third, adaptation to the local context

Abstract

The pandemic has had a severe impact on the whole world, and the Catholic Church is no exception. Catholics, who used to worship in church buildings and face-to-face, had to confine themselves to their homes during the pan[1]demic. The church tries to continue to conduct worship online using the YouTube platform. People with internet networks try to live stream mass from their respective locations. This short article aims to discuss the role of digital media as a means of proclamation for the Church during the pandemic and the polemics that arise later, namely digital media to build virtual Catholicism. The focus of the article is to discuss the difficulties of the Catholic Church in worship during the pandemic associated with the Religious Social-Shaping of Technology (RRST) method to form new creativity to create online wor[1]ship. Even though there are still debates within the Church about whether online worship is valid or not, we should not forget the role of the Holy Spirit. Even in online worship, the Holy Spirit still unites people as a community of faith that believes in God. In fact, it is hoped that the Church can develop and reconcile technology with its distinctive characteristics of Catholicism.

Abstract

This article discusses the gap that occurs between Catholic Urban Students and the Church in Malang City. This writing uses qualitative research methods with direct interviews with several urban Catholic students. The author dis[1]cusses this theme in the light of the praxis model according to Stephen B Bevans. The results of this research found that there are two factors that cause the gap between urban Catholic students and the Church. The first factor comes from urban students, namely urban students do not understand the meaning of the Eucharist celebration well, so for them the Eucharist is not an obligation, but as a necessity, urban students often come late to church and choose seats at the back so they don’t hear well. clear parish information is read at the time of the announcement. Then urban students still haven’t moved on with the old culture that comes from their region, but they are swept away by digital culture. The second factor comes from the church. By leading the Eucharist celebration on Sunday, the parish priest feels he has carried out his obligation to serve the people as a whole. Then the pastoral method is not based on the reality of people’s lives so that the services provided by pastoral officers do not touch directly with the lives of people (urban students). Based on the results of this research, this research recommends that the church be the first initiator in embracing Urban Catholic students in Malang City by accommodating activities or training and providing opportunities for them to be involved in church services and supporting them in the growth and development of their spiritual life.
