Abstract

Abstract An abstract is an entire picture of writing in terms of the information it contained. In terms of using English for the abstract is due to the reason that the language itself known internationally, thus makes it being recognized and read by lots of people. However, writing in English has never been easy for some people- particularly for English language students- who are demanding to write perfectly in terms of grammar. It is even more complicated due to fulfilling all the formalities; composing, developing logical ideas for the reader to comprehend its content. In this study, the writer aims to find out the errors in grammar in the thesis abstract of the graduate students of English Concentration of Post Graduate Program of State Islamic University of Sultan Syarif Qasim II (UIN SUSKA) Riau. This research uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive analysis technique. Samples of this research were collected purposively from the Post Graduate Program Library of the University in 2018, and the number is 17 (seventeen) abstracts from 2015 to 2017. The result of the data analysis shows that the types of error produced in a row are punctuation at the first place by 76.47% and then singular-plural by 47.06%, preposition and subject-verb agreement each by 29.41%, verb form and conciseness (long words) by 23.53%, and the last is Capitalizing by 5.88%. In addition, the omission of the article, especially article 'the', also occurred many times in the writing. Keywords: Error Analysis, Grammatical, Thesis Abstract, Writing

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the benefit of listening to English songs to improve their listening skills. This study uses qualitative case study methodology. Qualitative case study methodology enables researchers to conduct an in-depth exploration of complex phenomena within some specific context. According to Baskarada cited in Rashid, case study method is the most widely used in academia for researchers interested in qualitative research. Data collection by giving questionnaires and written interviews in this study were ten students of 4th-semester education class A, English Education Department, one of the private universities in Bogor for the 2020-2021 academic year. This study shows benefits for students in listening to English songs; it can improve English language skills, help students focus more on learning, motivate learning, relax the body, all students agree that listening to English songs can be obtained by listening to English songs as a learning medium. Abstract

This Paper is used to apply the FARS (Framework for Analysis of the Relational Structure) model of discourse analysis. In this paper, the writer tries to analyze the in the text in order to recognize the relation between segment and find the plausibility of the application of FARS relation to the writer’s massage which is attemted to communicate in the global level of the text and how it is developed in lower level or in micro level of the text. This analisis is attampeted to show the prominence of paratactic and hypotatic relation may relates to writer massage which is delivered within the text. It is also used to present the comparison of applicability of CARS and FARS analysis in language pedagogy. FARS analysis is focused on the study of discourse structure, textual coherence and fungtional of textual relation. FARS analysis is developed based on the RST (Rhetoritical Structure Theory) model of discourse analysis. The three main claims found in RST are abuot the predominance of nucleus/ Satellite structural pattern, the functional basis of hierarchy, and the communicative role of structure (Mann & Thompson, 1988). However, in FARS these three main points are presented a little bit different in the number of relation, the taxis principles of each relations and the name of the relation. Abstrak Pada tulisan analisa diskursus FARS digunakan untuk menganalisa teks guna mengetahui hubungan antar segment pada tulisan ESL dan Native Writer . Selain itu analisa in juga untuk menemukan tingkat kelogisan dari aplikasi FARS terhadap pesan yang ingin dikomunikasikan oleh penulis pada tingkat global dari teks yang dianalisa dan tingkat kelogisan ini dibangun pada level yang lebih rendah atau pada level mikro. Artikel ini mencoba menunjukkan relasi parataksis dan hipotaksis yang menonjol yang berhubungan dengan pesan penulis yang disampaikannya melalui teks. Artikel ini juga untuk menunjukkan perbandingan pengaplikasian analisa CARS dan FARS pada pengajaran bahasa. Analisa FARS adalah studi stuktur diskursus , tekstual koherensi, dan fungsi relasi tekstual. Analisa ini dikembangkan berdasarkan model analisa RST (Rhetoriticl Structure Theory). Tiga klaim pada RST adalah tentang keunggulan inti/ pola strukstural satelit, tingkatan dari dasar fungsi, dan peran komunikatif dari struktur tulisan. Namun demikian, pada analisa FARS, tiga poin inti ini disajikan sedikit berbeda pada jumlah relasi, prinsip taksis pada tiap- tiap relasi dan penamaan relasinya.

Abstract

This research was intended to identify the sctructure and texture of the text in a child’s story Kesetiaan Merpati by M. Syafii Masykur in addition to reviewing the language worthiness which is used by children under five years of age. The design of this research was qualitative descriptive research using the discourse analysis approach. The source of data in this research was the children's book story Kesetiaan Merpati, the data from this research was a lingual unit of words, clauses, or sentences found in children’s book story Kesetiaan Merpati. The data was collected by using the responsive technique and note-taking technique. To fulfill the aim of this research the data was taken by using a criterion-based sampling technique. The data were analyzed by using the distributional method and interactive analysis, which were data collection, data reduction, data presentation, deduction, and verification. The research found in the text structure of children's story Kesetiaan Merpati, there were orientation, complications, evaluation, resolution, and coda. Meanwhile, textual texture in the children’s story Kesetiaan Merpati consisted of grammatical and lexical. The narration of Kesetiaan Merpati found 45 grammatical errors; among these were ineffective sentence in 5 sentences, infrequent punctuation in 4 sentences, uneconomical word as 4, infrequent use of words as 4, the error of phonology as 3, the error of morphology as 1, the error of conjunction as 3, double subject as 2, the error of preposition as 1, the negative clause as 2, vocabulary as 8, nominalization as 6, technique term as 2 and the type of sentence used were paratactic and hypotactic complex. Hereinafter, on lexical of narration in 56 sentences. From the grammatical mistaken identification of the book story Kesetiaan Merpati by M. Syafii Maskur, it was not worthy to be given to a child under 5 years of age. This was seen in the many grammatical errors of a vocabulary that is difficult and uneasily understood by children of that age, as well as the clauses and metaphors.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out the students’ perception on online learning class during covid 19 pandemic. Sample of this study were 16 students of the third semesterand the fifth semester of English Study Program at Islamic University of Indragiri. The research method used in this study was a descriptiveresearch. Researchers gave questionnaire and interview about student’s perception on online learning class during covid 19 pandemicto collect the data. After the data has been collected, it was found that the data from questionnaire shown that the percentage is 52,97 %, it can be written that the students’ perception on learning online class during covid 19 pandemic wasNeutral, because 52,97% was in range 60%-79,99%. This finding means that the students do not refuse learning online classduring covid 19 pandemic but also do not accept as whole since some obstacles they faced during online class. The poor connection and less of interaction made most of the learners did not have deep understanding of the material as in offline class.

Abstract

This research was intended to find out the student’s ability in using descriptive adjective and adverb of manner in a sentence. The method used in this research was the descriptive quantitative research. The population of this research was the students of Islamic University of Indragiri. The sample of this research were 41 students (A and B classes) at the first semester of English Education Department, Islamic University of Indragiri in the academic 2021/2022 years. In collecting the data, this research used written test (essay) as the research instrument to use to find out the students’ ability in using descriptive adjective and adverb of manner in a sentence. Based on the result of test, the mean score of students’ ability in using descriptive adjective and adverb of manner in a sentence was 65.43. It was categorized enough level. Then for both of indicators, their ability in using adjective was higher than adverb. It can be proved by the result of the mean score was 73.10, and 61.04 for using adverb in a sentence. In conclution, the students in using adjective and adverb in a sentence were still confused to differentiate between two types of the grammatical structure.

Abstract

This descriptive qualitative study identified the expressive acts in Bohemian Rhapsody movie 2018. The theory from Martinez (2013) was utilized to examine the different types of expressive acts in the data source. Then, an observational approach and a non-participation technique were used to collect data for this research. The data was then evaluated using two methods. Those were pragmatic identity and pragmatic competence in equalizing. The researchers discovered 15 utterances that made by the characters in the movie Bohemian Rhapsody. Based on the character’s utterances, there were 5 different types of expressive acts. There were 2 acts that indicated the congratulating, 5 acts that indicated the thanking, 4 acts that indicated the apologizing, 1 act that indicated the condoling, and 3 acts that indicated the boasting. Furthermore, among the 15 utterances that had been discovered, the act of thanking became the most prominent among the other types of expressive acts.

Abstract

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the learning process is carried out online and students spend a lot of time at home with the phone. Therefore, there are so many types of e-books that you can look for to read in your spare time. This research aims to find out the students' reading habit in the fourth semester of English Language Education, FKIP-UIR. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. The sample of this research was used purposive sampling. The research sample was 43 of class 4B at English Language Education of FKIP UIR. This study found that students' reading habits were categorized as positive. Almost all students have a good attitude toward reading. Then, most students enjoy reading ebooks and do not feel annoyed when asked to read e-books. Meanwhile, students also have positive book reading. Students have favorite types of e-books to read and read e-books quite often. Furthermore, students also have positive time spent on reading both in academic and non-academic. Finally, students also get positive motivation in reading, and students get motivation from their families and lecturers in the academic field to read e-books because reading can improve achievement. on the other hand, the researcher found one indicator of reading habits to get negative results. The indicator is reading frequency. Most students said they did not often visit the web for online reading resources as well as students did not often read e-books because they did not like reading and preferred listening to reading.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to determine the maxim that violated in the movie “The Lion in Winter”. The characters in the movie were chosen as the data source that has a high probability of violating the maxims. This study used Grice (1989) theory to analyse the types of maxim violation. The method in this research applied the descriptive qualitative method from Creswell (2009). Then, the researchers used the non-participatory technique because the researchers did not include in the event. The pragmatic identity from Sudaryanto (2015) was included to analyse the data. In addition, this research found four type of maxim violation from the data source. Those were 7 data in maxim of quantity, 3 data in maxim of quality, 4 data in maxim of relation and 4 data in maxim of manner.

Abstract

Teachers should teach and transfer knowledge successfully in online learning, despite the fact that it is still a pandemic. It is difficult because the teacher and students aren't in the same room. Combining Google classroom and Google meeting is one of the solution to help the learners get some knowledge even in in online learning class. This research can be a good input for the teacher to evaluate future learning better than before in EFL classroom during Covid-19 pandemic for online learning class. This study aims at EFL students’ perception of online learning for EFL students during the covid-19 Pandemic in online learning class. The method of the research was descriptively quantitative. The sample of this research was 13 students, collected by using total sampling. The tool for this study was a series of 20-question questionnaire delivered to students using Google Form. The students were asked to choose one of four options in the questionnaire to collect data. After getting the data based on the students’ answer in questionnaire, the data was analysed. The result of the research stated that the students’ perception about combining Google classroom and Google meeting in online learning was very helpful. However, only a few student was saying not effective in combining Google classroom and Google meeting because of the internet connection around his place. The conclusion of the research was the students’ perception in combining Google classroom and Google meeting was helpful to cover only a few part of learning process, like transferring knowledge, even though there are still many part of learning are missing even though by using Google classroom and Google meeting.
