Abstract

The problem in this study was the students’ common difficulties in TOEFL Reading Comprehension. This study only used one variable. The research method used in this study was a descriptive research. The purpose of this study was to know the students’ common difficulties in TOEFL Reading Comprehension on the second semester of English Study Program at Islamic University of Indragiri Tembilahan. The total of the sample used in this study were 23 students, the technique was used to take the sample is total sampling. In collecting the data, the researcher used a test. After the data has been collected, the result of test showed that the skills that are considered to be the most difficult ones in TOEFL reading, which is skill 3. This skill is identifying stated detail questions correctly. It is the highest percentage (84%) with the total of incorrect answer is 210 from 5 items. Then, it is followed by skill 5 (82%) with the total of incorrect answer is 82 from 2 items, which is finding pronoun reference. It is the second most difficult skill for the students. The third most difficult skill is skill 7. It is responding of transition question achieve 81% with the total of incorrect answers is 81 from 2 items. Next, skill 10 is considered to be the fourth most difficult skill in TOEFL reading comprehension. The questions are about the use of context to give meaning of difficult word which is counted 80 % from the total of incorrect answers is 120 from 3 items. Then, the fifth most difficult skill in TOEFL reading comprehension is skill 1, which is consisting the questions about answering main idea questions correctly, students made 78% of the total incorrect answers is 156 from 4 items.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The study purposed to determine if application letter can improve the students writing skill. The research intent onto the students’ ability English functional writing, especially in writing application letter at the fourth semester ASM Persada Bunda Pekanbaru. The research participants were the fourth semester students of Akademi Sekretaris dan Manajemen (ASM) Persada Bunda Pekanbaru. There were 5 students. The research determined that application letter coud improve the students writing’s skill. This research is qualitative research. The writer collects the data using the test and the documentation. The test is written test of application letter in English subject for the students at the fourth semester of ASM Persada Bunda Pekanbaru. Then, the students’ sheet were corrected by scoring rubric of business letter. Finally, the writer analyzes the students’ score . Key words: Application letter, Writing Ability,

Abstract

the purpose of this research is to know the level of students’ self-directed learning at the second semester of English Study program of Islamic University of Indragiri. It is achieved by conducting a quantitative study. Questionnaire was distributed to 23 students to get the result of the research. The questionnaire was using Guttmann Scale. The result of this questionnaire revealed that students’ self-directed learning in listening class relies on low level.

Abstract

There are several kinds of literary works. They are a poem, novel, fiction, drama,etc. Daisy Miller is one of the famous and popular novels. This novel is written inthe spring of London. The Author is Henry James. The writer analyzed this novel bythe sociological approach. This research applies qualitative research which thedata are taken from the analysis document and material from books and internetresearch. Data analysis concerns the interpretative technique that focuses onexamining data. The main source of this research is the novel Daisy Miller thisresearch is going to answer the research questions what is the characteristic ofdemocracy and Feudalistic is as reflected in Daisy miller novel? And what are thephenomena between democracy and Feudalistic in Daisy Miller novel? From theanalysis the author concluded that Daisy Miller is a representative of Americanwoman as same as democracy in the American Custom, She is going abroad toSwitzerland which is peaceful country inhabited by all kinds of people of differentrace, ethnic, language, skin color, religion, profession, from all over the world.The Henry James as the author showed Daisy Miller as a vulgar and as free asthe representation of American culture that has correlated with the social life. On theother hand, the author describes Mrs. Costello as a Feudalistic of Europeanculture. Mrs. Costello is a representation as European social-life that alwaysdistinguishes between high and low status and it is one of the character of Feudalism.The feudalistic was that the power of the ruling class or Aristocracy rested on theircontrol of the farmable lands, leading to a class based upon the exploitation of thepeasants who farm these lands.

Abstract

Politeness is a visible feature in communication. A conversation is regarded as a polite conversation and an impolite one occasionally. The context is a meaningful aspect to acknowledge this meaning. It covers age, situation, place, relationship, etc. Mode of communication may also be acknowledged as a context. Along with the globalization era, mode of communication also grows and thrives to be diverse modes such as telephone and social media which enable people to communicate in face-to-face communication. One of the renowned modes is Facebook. In Facebook, as it is known that there are miscellaneous areas of people creating some groups to communicate where one may post or/ and comment on other’s wall. What the members do in point of fact is like what they do in the real conversation. As in the real society, they should also consider how to be polite in virtual communication. Thus, this paper is to discuss the politeness principles & strategies in Facebook conversation. The excerpts of the conversation are obtained from a professional group named Teachers Voices (TV). The group's members were academicians such as lecturers, teachers, graduate students and others who are interested in English language studies.

Abstract

Almost all of the students who learn English assume that learning grammar of English is not so important. They often think that their English is already acceptable in every condition without good grammar. This assumption makes their care on how important grammar is for their English less. It causes their grammar competence becomes low. Besides, the lecturer’s way of teaching which is not interesting also gives contribution to this low competence. This pre-experimental research was done by implementing gallery walk technique which is believed as an interesting and challenging teaching technique in intermediate English grammar class. The objectives of this research were to know: (1) the students’ grammar competence before the implementation of gallery walk technique, (2) the students’ competence on grammar after being taught by using GWT and (3) the effectiveness of GWT towards students’ grammar competence. The population of this study was two classes of the third semester students of English language eduacation department of UNHASY in the academic year of 2019/2020. The sample was class B comprising of 19 students by using purposive sampling. The students’ average score of grammar before GWT was applied was 67. After GWT was implemented, their mean score of grammar became 73. Because the value of sig. (2-tailed) was lower than 0.05, it showed that the improvement of the average results of pretest and posttest was significantly different. Then, it came to the conclusion that GWT was effective for teaching grammar.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to find out the effect of graphic organizer instruction on the students’ reading motivation. The study was done through quasi-experimental design. The data were collected using Motivation for Reading Questionnaire (MRQ) developed by Wigfield and Guthrie (1997) . The population consisted of 119 students. A cluster sampling technique was used to take them as samples. The samples were divided into two groups; experimental group and control group. Then, the data were analyzed using t-test and paired sample t-test methods to find out whether there was significant difference between the experimental group taught by graphic organizer instruction as the treatment and the control group taught conventionally. The results of the research shows that the significant probabilities were higher than 0.05 (>0.05) ) in both paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test. It meant that there was significant difference on the students’ reading motivation in the pre-questionnaire and in the post-questionnaire of the classes. In sum up, the the application of graphic organizer instruction gives positive effect toward the students’ reading motivation.

Abstract

Abstract This research was purposed to analyze students’ errors in changing active into passive voice of simple present and past tense. This study used descriptive qualitative research design. The data source was students’ test printed papers which contained passive voice questions as the instrument. The subject was eighth grade of SMP Swasta Puteri Sion Medan which consisted of 31 students. The data was identified, classified, and analyzed based on surface strategy taxonomy of Dulay’s theory, namely error of omission with percentage 23,3%, error of addition with percentage 12,19%, error of misformation with percentage 55,82% which established as the dominant error, and error of misordering with percentage 8,67%. The total of errors’ percentage reached 99,98%. Keywords: Error Analysis, Passive Voice. Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis kesalahan siswa dalam mengubah kalimat aktif menjadi kalimat pasif dalam simple present dan past tense. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Sumber data adalah lembar kerja siswa yang dicetak yang berisi pertanyaan kalimat pasif sebagai instrumennya. Subjek penelitian ini adalah kelas VIII SMP Swasta Puteri Sion Medan dengan jumlah siswa sebanyak 31 orang. Data diidentifikasi, diklasifikasikan, dan dianalisis berdasarkan kesalahan taksonomi siasat permukaan dari teori Dulay, yaitu kesalahan penghilangan dengan persentase 23,3%, kesalahan penambahan dengan persentase 12,19%, kesalahan salah formasi dengan persentase 55,82% yang ditetapkan sebagai kesalahan dominan dan kesalahan salah susun dengan persentase 8,67%. Total persentase kesalahan mencapai 99,98%. Kata kunci: Analisis kesalahan, kalimat pasif.

Abstract

Abstract The purposes of the study were to explain the effects of implicit instruction on student’s sociopragmatic competences, implicit instructions on students’ pragmalinguistic competences, explicit instructions on students’ sociopragmatic competences, explicit instructions on students’ pragmalinguistic competences, the differences between implicit and explicit instructions on students’ sociopragmatic competences, the differences between implicit and explicit instructions on student’s pragmalinguistic competences, and the interaction between instructions with the students’ sociopragmatic and pragmalinguistic competences. The study used a quantitative research by using experimental factorial design 2x2. The data were taken from 80 second semester students at English Language Education Study Program at STAIN. The result of the study revealed that the mean score of post-test in implicit instruction on students’ sociopragmatic was 80.000 while explicit 92.550. Meanwhile, the mean score of post-test in implicit instruction on students’ pragmalinguistic was 83.000 while explicit 95.5000. It could be concluded that explicit has better effect to teach refusal strategies than implicit instruction on students’ sociopragmatic and pragmalinguistic competence based on the difference between the means score on implicit and explicit.

Abstract

Speaking is a skill to produce sequences of words that exist at the meaning while reading means a skill to get meaning from the written words. Vocabulary is the key in which these two skills relate to each other. The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between speaking skill and reading comprehension of the third semester English students at Islamic University of Indargiri. The sample of this study was 20 students. The research method used in this study was a correlational study. Researchers gave the test of speaking skills and reading comprehension to collect data. After the data has been collected, it was found that the average of the students’ speaking skills was categorized as Good because 70,8 in range 66-79 and the students’ reading comprehension was categorized as Good to Excellentbecause 78,7 in range 76-100. Based on those findings, researchers analyzed the students’ speaking skill and their reading comprehension by using Pearson r formula, with the result is 0,691. Based on the coefficient correlation, 0,691 was interpreted as Moderate Correlation. It means there is a significant correlation between students’ speaking skill and their reading comprehension.
