Abstract

Abstract: Developing a Video-Based Coaching Program Package to Improve Science Teachers’ Teaching Competencies. A number of programs have been launched by the government to improve teachers’ teaching competencies. It seems, however, there is no significant improvement in the practice. This paper presents results of a three-year research project employing the Research and Development (R D) design. In the first year, a needs assessment was conducted to identify teachers’ needs for their professional development. Based on the results of the first year, a video-based coaching package was developed in the second year. In the final year, an experimental study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of the coaching package. The study reveals that through the coaching package there is improvement in teachers’ ability to reflect on their own practice as well as their teaching competencies. Abstract

Abstract: Lesson Study Model to Improve Students’ Achievement in the Instructions Process of Kinesiology Classes. This study aims to improve the quality of students’ kinesiology achievement in the Faculty of Sports Sciences, the Yogyakarta State University. The participants were 43 students attending Sports Science Courses. This study was an action research study consisting of two cycles. The data were analyzed using the descriptive technique, consisting of (1) description, (2) validation, and (3) interpretation. The first cycle showed that the quality of learning was still low. In the second cycle, there was an improvement after the CD with audio visual media was played. The learning process through kinesiology lesson study with a sports analysis increased students' understanding. Based on the results of the reflection and discussion on the action, learning through lesson study by preparing materials using audio visual media can improve the quality of kinesiology learning. Abstract

Abstract: Measuring the Science Process Skill Creativity in the Context of Assessment for Learning. This study aims to measure the science process skill creativity in Biology in Senior High Schools (SHSs), in terms of the basic skills, process skills, and investigative skills and use them in the context of assessment for learning. The study used the learning continuum as the abstract continuum and the instruments of the divergent process science skills in Biology in SHSs developed by Bambang Subali in 2009. Two of the six instrument sets were modified and administered to 1095 students. The results show that in the process science skill creativity, the skill in data measurement is the most difficult skill among the basic skills while the observation skill is the easiest. The skill in making inferences is the most difficult skill among the process skills while the skill in making predictions is the easiest. The most difficult skill in the investigative skills is the skill in planning investigation, followed by those in reporting an investigation and making an investigation. Abstract

Abstract: Learner Characteristics as a Basis for Teaching Method and Research on Instruction. The instructional technology focuses its analysis on the improvement of the instructional quality on the basis of instructional strategies or instructional method variables. Instructional methods variables are classified into three main categories: (1) organizational strategy, (2) delivery strategy, and (3) management strategy. The variables which greatly influence the utilization of instructtional methods are the instructional condition variables, classified into three categories: (1) objectives and characteristics of a field of study, (2) constraints and characteristics of a field of study, and (3) learner characteristics. The learner characteristics are students’ personal quality, such as their intelligence, prior knowledge, cognitive styles, learning styles, motivation, and socio-cultural factors, which greatly influence the process and result of the study. Learner characteristics will determine the selection of the management strategy, which is also related to the method to organize the learning process. The learner characteristics have to be accepted as a given condition and utilized as a basis for research on instruction. Keywords: instructional variables, learner characteristics

Abstract

Abstract: The Improvement of ECE Educators’ Performance in Developing the Kinesthetic Quotient. This study aims to improve the performance of Early Childhood Education (ECE) educators at the TAPAS Al-Ikhlas BPPNFI Regional IV Surabaya so that they are capable of developing children’s kinesthetic qoutient through the concepts of ECE and kinestetic teachinglearning. This study was a classroom action research study. The data were collected through interviews, observations, and documents and were analyzed by means of data reduction, data display, data verification, and conclusion drawing. The findings showed that: (1) before the action was implemented, the kinesthetic teaching-learning model was teacher-centered, the educators did not understand kinesthetic learning concept and learning psychology, the classroom management was not well implemented, and the teaching style was monotonous, (2) after the action was implemented, the educators’ teaching skills improved, they employed a variety of teching styles, they understood ECE concepts better, and they were willing to accept changes and committed to making changes. Abstract

Abstrak: Telaah Kritis terhadap Filsafat Pendidikan Paulo Freire. Artikel ini membahas filsafat pendidikan Paulo Freire berbasiskan riset kepustakaan. Pembahasan dibagi ke dalam tiga bagian: (a) filsafat tentang manusia; (b) arkeologi kesadaran manusia; dan (c) politik pendidikan. Filsafat manusia Paulo Freire dapat dikategorikan sebagai humanisme Marxis-Kristen, karena berbasiskan pada gagasan-gagasan yang berkembang dalam diskursus Marxis dan Kristen. Arkeologi kesadaran manusia yang dikonseptualisasi Freire merupakan sebuah studi tentang bentuk fundamental kesadaran manusia, dan bentuk-bentuk ini dapat dilihat melalui cara manusia memahami dan menerima realitas eksistensial yang melingkupinya, yaitu apakah mereka melihatnya secara magis, naif, atau kritis. Filsafat pendidikan Freire juga didasarkan pada asumsi bahwa pendidikan itu politik. Dengan bahasa lain, semua aktivitas pendidikan itu memiliki implikasi, kualitas, dan konsekuensi politis, karena semuanya berpengaruh terhadap subjektivitas manusia. Abstract

Abstract: Implementation of Multiple-Representation-Based Instructions to Improve the Mastery of Quantum Physics Concepts. This study aimed to design and investigate the role of multiple-representation-based instructions in the improvement of student teachers’ quantum physics mastery. This study used a quasi-experimental control group pretest-posttest design as quantitative part of a mixed-methods study. The subjects were student teachers of physics in the Department of Mathematics and Science Education in a state university in Lampung Province in the 2009-2010 academic year. For assessing the quantum physics mastery, the Quantum Physics Concept Achievement Test (QPCAT) was used. The quantitative analyses were conducted using the Mann Whitney U test. The results showed that multiple-representation-based instructions had a significant effect on student teachers’ quantum physics concept mastery. The results of semi-structured interviews as qualitative part of this study indicated that in the experimental group the students used a variety of representation modes in the learning process and were capable of using the most appropriate one to solve a given quantum physics concept problem. Abstract

Abstract: Improving the Quality of the Natural Chemical Substance Lesson through the Pattern Recognizing Method. This study aims to improve the quality of the natural chemical substance lesson through the pattern recognizing method. This study was an action research study consisting of two cycles, each of which involved three meetings. The first cycle presented the polyketide topic and the second cycle the terpenoid topic. The instruments were questionnaires, observation sheets, and evaluation sheets. The final stage of the second cycle showed that: 1) the quality of the assignments involving natural substances and the number of chemical found in the references improved, which made it easier to move to further steps, 2) the students’ activities and participation increased, indicated by the group presentation in which each group had a chance to raise questions, 3) the quality and quantity of questions, especially high level ones, increased, and all of them were written and submitted, and 4) the students’ learning achievement improved, indicated by the percentage of students achieving scores above 60 (84%). Abstract

Abstract: The Effect of Managers’ Educational Levels on the Go-PublicCompany Performance. This study aims to investigate the effect of managers’educational levels on the company performance. The population comprised allthe manufacturing companies listed in the Indonesian Capital Market duringthe period of 2003-2007. The sample, consisting of 60 companies, was selectedusing the purposive sampling technique. The variable of managers’ educationallevels was controlled by the variables of accounting income and cash flows. Thedata on managers’ educational levels were collected through a questionnaireand those on accounting income and the cash flows through documents fromthe company financial statement published in the Indonesian Capital Market.The data on the stock returns movement as a company’s performanceparameter were obtained from the Indonesian Securities Market Database(ISMD). The data were analyzed using the data panel regression, employing thesoftware of EVIEWS-3 program. The result shows that the regression coefficientof managers’ educational levels on the company performance is positive andstatistically significant with α 1% and t-value at p 0.01. Abstract

Abstract: Effectiveness of the Feedback Providing Strategies on the PracticumPerformance of the Students of the Diploma Three (D-3) of the ElectronicEngineering Department. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of thefeedback providing strategies (immediate feedback and delayed feedback) onstudents’ performance in the Electronics lab course. This study was anexperiment employed a posttest-only control group design. The subjects werestudents of the Diploma Three (D-3) Program of the Electronic EngineeringDepartment of FT UNM, divided into two treatment groups. Group A,consisting of 20 students, received the treatment of the immediate feedback andGroup B, consisting of 19 students, received the treatment of delayed feedback.The data on the students’ mastery of lab materials were collected throughobservations using a performance assessment form. The data were analyzedusing the t-test. The results showed that the practicum performance of thestudents receiving immediate feedback was better than that of the studentsreceiving delayed feedback.
