Abstract

This study identifies the factors causing unemployment of vocational high school graduates due to the mismatch between the mismatch demand and supply of labor. The research uses primary data obtained from questionnaires to several vocational high school graduates accompanied by interviews with several entrepreneurs and labor experts in Yogyakarta Special Region. This study utilizes qualitative analysis obtained through focus group discussions (FGD) and the Delphi method to identify the cause of educated unemployment. The results indicate that the dominant factor in worker’s success is the personal character. The vocational high school graduates have advantages in hard skills and soft skills but they are weak in personal character. If they have not found jobs as they expected, they tend to wait for jobs vacancies. During the waiting process, they are included in the unemployed group. Their choices lead to educated unemployment. Therefore, all the stakeholders should strengthen the youth's character.

Abstract

International mega sports events commanding massive public spending are expected to stimulate the economic development of the host country. This study aims to examine the impact of the 2018 Asian Games Jakarta-Palembang on local businesses, captured through the perspectives of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) and official partners of the event. Primary data were collected through face-to-face survey administered using questionnaire during and after the event, yielding usable responses from 284 stallholders in Jakarta and Palembang venues and 19 official partners. The results show that the respondents hired additional workers during the event and they also generated additional sales, profit of which was partly used to scale up their businesses. However, future event can generate greater impact to local businesses with more effective socialization, simpler registration, and better stalls arrangements including more strategic location, better electricity and water supplies, and easier loading access to the venues.

Abstract

The Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis is the relationship between environmental and economic indicators forming an inverted U-curve. This paper aims to provide new insights using the long-term Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) technique. The research data use time series from 1974 to 2020. Empirical findings result in the formation of an open U-curve phenomenon. The immature post-industrialization stage in Indonesia hurts increasing CO2 emissions. Economic indicators as control variables that include population, consumption of electrical energy, and international trade ratios have a good impact on reducing CO2 emissions. The indicator of fossil energy consumption shows that Indonesia still has a dependence on non-renewable energy. After the ratification of the Kyoto Protocol in Indonesia, it does not have promising implications for reducing CO2 emissions. This paper provides important implications for establishing strict regulations to reduce CO2 emissions that contribute to climate change. In the future, the government must encourage people's behavior to save energy, optimize renewable energy, change energy demand patterns, transform low-carbon export products, and evaluate international agreements that impact the pattern of sustainable development in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the factors forming the number of poor people in Eastern Indonesia. Panel data regression was utilized as the analysis approach, with a cross-section comprising 12 provinces in Indonesia's Eastern Region from 2010 to 2018. This study will examine the effect of total government spending on education, government spending on health, labor force participation rate, regional minimum wage, investment, and the Gini index on poverty in Eastern Indonesia. The results showed that government spending on health and regional minimum wages had a negative effect on the number of poor people in Eastern Indonesia. The number of poor people in Eastern Indonesia will decrease if the realization of government spending on health and the determination of regional minimum wages increases. The increase in the realization of government spending in the health sector indicates that regional policies on the allocation of health spending have been carried out in a proportional, efficient, and effective manner so that they are right on target. Meanwhile, government expenditure on education, investment, labor force participation rates, and the Gini index has no effect on the number of poor people in Eastern Indonesia.

The analysis method used  is a quantitative approach with panel data regression using a gravity model based on time series data with cross sections of 18 trading partners from 2008 to 2017. The results of the analysis show that the internet subscription price variable has a significant effect on increasing international trade. Other variables such as GDP, population, and distance have a significant positive or negative effect on international trade, while FTA does not have any effect on exports of creative industry goods.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the market structure and examine the main factors that influence the performance of the pharmaceutical industry in Indonesia, these factors are the Market Power Hypothesis (MPH) and the Efficiency Structure Hypothesis (ESH), where the debate between the two perspectives is still going on until now. The Market Power Hypothesis argues that market performance is the result of market power, while the Efficient Structure Hypothesis argues that market performance is a result of the ability to perform efficiency. The variable used to proxy MPH is market concentration, while the ESH is proxied using the variable of technical efficiency and scale. Next, the performance variable used is ROA. The type of data used is secondary data from the annual report of 8 pharmaceutical producers listed on Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) from 2010 to 2019. The analytical method used is DEA and panel data regression. The results showed that market concentration negatively affected ROA, while technical efficiency and scale had a positive effect on ROA. These results indicate that the performance (ROA) of the pharmaceutical industry in Indonesia is influenced by the level of efficiency rather than market power, so the results of this study support the Efficiency Structure Hypothesis (ESH) that efficiency is the key to success in the market. These results also support the Chicago School SCP framework that performance determines conduct and then market structure.
