Abstract

AbstrackEnglish  as one of the international languages has been learned by the students of Faculty of Letters in Gajayana University. In learning English as foreign language, most learners have problem  in  pronunciation,  especially  in  the  way  they  pronounce  the  sound  of  the  target language.  Mispronunciations  which are produce by the learners is caused by the interference of the source language or first language. The object  of this research  is the students of Faculty of Letters in Gajayana University 2005/2006 intake who are  native speakers of Javanese  and have  been  done  phonology  class.  Some  specific  sounds  are  discussed  in  these  research namely  English  sounds  of  inter-dental  fricative,    and  alveolar  approximant.  The finding of the research are  some interferences occur in pronouncing  those sounds, they are 1) voiceless  inter-dental  fricative    is  pronounced  using  voiceless  dental  stop  ,  aspirated voiceless dental stop  , voiced dental stop  , and voiceless palato-alveolar affricate  . 2).Voiced  inter-dental  fricative  is  pronounce  using  voiceless  dental  stop  ,  aspirated voiceless dental stop  , voiced dental stop  , and voiceless palato-alveolar affricate  . 3).Voiced  alveolar  approximant    is  pronounced  using  voiced  alveolar  trill.  4).  thepossible reasons for the interferences made are based on the similarity of characteristics in the state of vocal cords, place of articulation, and manner of articulations.Keyword: interference

Abstract

Abstract This research looks at listening as one factor that gives contribution toward speaking among high school students. The study attempts to reveal through data analysis, in the form of students’ score from each variable that both have correlation. Further the objective of the study is also to find out the extent of influence contributed by listening toward speaking. The research applies library study and field study (instrument designing and test performing both for listening and speaking). The theory used for analysis deals with listening and speaking correlation from language learning review. The result of the study demonstrates that the correlation of listening as the independent variable with speaking as dependent variable is positive. It also proves that with a unit of program or treatment given toward listening class, there will be a significant improvement equals with 3.134 times from previous speaking score for the same sample. For the analysis of data, the extent of correlation between two varibales is shown as low. It indicates that even though listening do have positive correlation towarde speaking, it is not the only deminant factor to determine success in speaking.

Abstract

This library research aims to (1) identify effects of various colonialism on the change of morphological aspects of English Language and (2) explore the morphological change of verb and noun. Those two aims will give the readers a perspective of how language changes through the time. This is a library research which is conducted by collecting and processing data of various lexicons from a book entitled ‘A History of English Language’. The data processing is entirely based on some rules in a book entitled ‘Sejarah Bahasa Inggris’ written by Tarjana (1991). From the data processing, it is revealed that various colonizers ‘demand’ a language change, especially morphological aspect, in order a language understanding between colonizers and the colony will grow. Besides,  morphological change will give us a clear description about natural characteristics that a language will always experience a change to accomodate the need of communicating effectively and efficiently.   Keywords: morphological change, English Language, colonialism

Abstract

Abstract This research is aimed at finding and describing the intonation of English declarative sentence produced by English Department students of Universitas PGRI Yogyakarta. The intonation is analyzed  based on contour approach through the movements of pitch. The researcher uses three students as his respondents. The data are analized through three steps, firstly, data are collected through listening and recording process, secondly, the recording data are converted to soundwave and pitch diagrams using PRAAT software, at this point, PRAAT text grid is applied to make the pitch diagrams easy to understand, and finally, the researcher draws conclusion according to the contour of pitch in the diagrams.  The result of this research illustrates that the respondents tend to rise the pitch at end of English declarative sentence which correspondingly changes the mood of the sentence into an interrogrative sentence. English declarative sentences generally have falling intonation and native speakers of English do not rise the pitch at the end of declarative sentences. However, this research shows that students of English have inadequate knowledge about suprasegmental features in English particularly intonation.   Keywords: intonation, declarative, sentence

Abstract

Abstract This study investigates language functions used by the caretakers of autistic children in ―Miracle Run‖. The objectives of the study are to find out the kinds and the effectiveness of language functions used by caretakers in the film. This study uses descriptive qualitative approach. It is categorized as discourse analysis because this study analyzes phenomena of talk in interaction. The data are collected from the utterances used by the caretakers; they are mother, doctor, teacher, and therapist when talk to the autistic children and those are analyzed by using M.A.K Halliday theory on language functions. Abstract

This study was designed to investigate the role of „Hot Potatoes‟ in promoting autonomous learning of the English education students at Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta. This study was conducted on some reasons: first, autonomous learning is very significant in the success of learners‟ learning, and to make the learners implement autonomous learning is quite tricky. Second, the use of Hot Potatoes as the software is very simple and fun to publish any education materials online, and as a result, the students like the program. Therefore, it is very challenging for the teacher to find a way to promote autonomous learning to the students through the use of a simple education software called „Hot Potatoes‟. The study was aimed at exploring the roles of Hot Potatoes in English teaching and learning. Further, it also explored the advantages of the Hot Potatoes in developing the students‟ ability or habit in having autonomy in their learning. This research was a qualitative case study in nature since it dealt with a holistic description. The setting of the research was Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta with 10 students who have implemented Hot Potatoes in designing teaching materials for them to use at schools. The procedure to collect the data was through questionnaires and interviews with the participants. In analyzing the data, the researcher first categorized the data gained from the questionnaires and then extracted the information from the data collected through the interview process. The data were then grouped into categories and interpreted in accordance with the research questions. The study found that students first had awareness to be better in mastering English due to their online publishing the teaching materials developed with Hot Potatoes. They were aware that by publishing materials online, people all around the globe would have a chance to stop by and read the materials. This awareness led them to learn by themselves on the grammar of the sentences they wrote. As a result, they started looking up grammar books to check if the grammar was appropriate or not. The same process also happened to the choice of words and the spelling of words used in the teaching materials they developed. They checked and rechecked until they were sure of the correctness of the dictions and the spelling. The last but not least is about the cultural issue in the sentences. It dealt with the appropriateness of the sentences they make due to native speakers‟ cultural background. Therefore, the writer concluded that the use of Hot Potatoes promoted autonomy in students‟ learning. Keywords: Autonomous learning, Hot Potatoes, Students’ Awareness, online publishing

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research aims to improve speaking ability on speaking for specific purposes class of class A1 students of English Education Department students, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, PGRI University of Yogyakarta in the academic year of 2012/2013. The effort which was done is using role-playing as a technique in teaching and learning activities. This collaborative and participative action research consisted of three cycles, with plan, action, observation, and reflection in each cycle. The participants were the students of class A1 of English Education Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, PGRI University of Yogyakarta. The data were collected by means of interviewing, recording technique, observing, and assessing. The qualitative data were analyzed through data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing, while the quantitative data was analyzed descriptively by counting the mean score and the score percentage of the result of the observation. The results of research show that using role-playing technique can improve students’ speaking ability on speaking for specific purposes class. It can be indicated by the improvement of the activity of speaking classroom English, the interaction between teacher and students, and the students and teacher’s attention. The improvement of speaking ability on classroom English is also supported by the improvement of students’ achievement in speaking performance to a mean score of 161,18 or 70,579% (cycle I), 176,31 or 76,956% (cycle II), and 198,16 or 85,797% (cycle III). Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out how the implementation of role plays can improve the students’ speaking skill of grade VII of MTs Mualimin Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta in academic year 2011/2012 and how students respond to the use of role plays methods in teaching and learning process. This research is an action research. In this study the researcher uses action research theory proposed by Kemmis and McTaggart. The participants of the research are the students of grade VII of MTs Mualimin Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta in academic year 2011/2012. The research instrument used by the writer is in the form of observation checklist and test. The data in the research are mainly gathered through the use of pre-test, observation, questionnaires, and post-test. After the data are collected, the researcher analyzes them. The researcher uses the pre-test as the basis for measuring the students’ reading skill. The finding of the research shows that the implementation of translation and discussion can improve students’ speaking skill of grade VII of MTs Muhammmadiyah Yogyakarta in academic year 2011/2012. In the pre-test result, in which they formerly did not learn using discussion and translation, the mean of the pre-test was 55.64. After they learnt English using discussion and translation, the mean of the post-test was 63.3. The students’ response was positive when role plays methods were applied in teaching speaking. Abstract

Abstract The research aims to improve the level thinking qualities toward students in Reading III using students‘ responses text. The research applied descriptive qualitative method. It described about the students‘ responses text that produced by students in reading novel to improve students‘ higher order based on their own perspective. The participants of this research were nine students of the semester III, A3 class, English Education Program of PGRI University of Yogyakarta. Data were got through observation, interview, document analysis and questionaire. Qualitative data were anayzed through coding data, explanation, or data presenting and conclusion. The findings showed that using students‘ responses text in Reading III learning process that focus on novel significantly improve the students‘higher order thinking level. The first activities, students‘order thinking level still in the lower category i.e., remember and understand. The precentage is only 25%. The second activities, students‘order thinking level imrpoved up to 45%. The improvement of students‘order thinking in reading comprehension using students‘ responses also influenced students‘ motivation and feeling when they were learning. Abstract

AbstractThis essay is under auspice of structural linguistics, which is mean to describe the preposition nganti in Javanese language, understanding, how to use, what kind of categorial coconstituent which is determined the presence, what is function, and what semantic role of prepositional phrases. Therefore, this essay uses descriptive qualitative method and a contact approach. This essay shows the result the presence of the preposition nganti in the sentence is not determined by the filler predicates category, but is determined by the coconstituent category which can be seen from the use. Categorical types of constituents that determine the presence of the preposition nganti are five categories, namely nouns (concrete, abstract), adjectives, numerals, adverbs (temporal, qualitative, size), and verbs (active, adversative). The preposition nganti function is as a boundary ending marker (time, place, number, size), a purpose marker, and an effect marker.   Key words: preposition nganti, Javanese language, structural linguistic, coconstituent, category, function, marker
