Improving Students’ Speaking Skill Through Role Plays: A Classroom Action Research at MTs Mualimin Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta in Academic Year 2011/2012 Syahruzah, Juang Kurniawan

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out how the implementation of role plays can improve the students’ speaking skill of grade VII of MTs Mualimin Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta in academic year 2011/2012 and how students respond to the use of role plays methods in teaching and learning process. This research is an action research. In this study the researcher uses action research theory proposed by Kemmis and McTaggart. The participants of the research are the students of grade VII of MTs Mualimin Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta in academic year 2011/2012. The research instrument used by the writer is in the form of observation checklist and test. The data in the research are mainly gathered through the use of pre-test, observation, questionnaires, and post-test. After the data are collected, the researcher analyzes them. The researcher uses the pre-test as the basis for measuring the students’ reading skill. The finding of the research shows that the implementation of translation and discussion can improve students’ speaking skill of grade VII of MTs Muhammmadiyah Yogyakarta in academic year 2011/2012. In the pre-test result, in which they formerly did not learn using discussion and translation, the mean of the pre-test was 55.64. After they learnt English using discussion and translation, the mean of the post-test was 63.3. The students’ response was positive when role plays methods were applied in teaching speaking. Abstract

Tujuan dari kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah untuk memberikan pelatihan pengajaran Bahasa Inggris usia dini pada guru-guru KB dan TKIT Genius Kids Desa Panggungharjo sehingga mereka mendapatkan bekal yang berguna untuk meningkatkan keefektifitasan pengajaran English for the young learner. Untuk mencapai tujuan tersebut metode pelatihan adalah dengan melaui pelatihan dan pendampingan. Hasil kegiatan ini adalah para peserta dapat memahami karakteristik siswa usia dini dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris, dapat menggunakan media pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris anak usia dini yang menarik dan interaktif dan dapat  mengajarkan Bahasa Inggris melalui lagu, cerita, serta permainan.

Abstract

The intention of this study is to describe the effectiveness of peer learning in EFL reading classroom of English Department students of PGRI University. The comprehension analysis is intended by comparing the answer of EFL reading classroom students in reading exercises. In order to sequence the reading comprehension of the EFL reading classroom the pre-test and post-test of reading exercises are measured. The experiment of reading comprehension includes the recruitment of 40 students of EFL reading classroom, the training, and exercising of reading text in reading exercises. These students are all first-year female teacher training students at PBI-UPY and aged between 17 and 23. The measurement is compare with pre-test and post-test of reading exercises. Standard measurement is comparison of students answer in pre-test and post-test of reading exercises. The result of this research the students who passed the standard score improved from 37% in the preliminary data to 77% at the end of the research. It means that peer learning strategy improves students’ reading comprehension that was influenced by student’s factors (attention, interest and participation) and lecturer factors (choosing the material and managing classroom).

Abstract

The aims of this research are to find out how the implementation of translation can improve the students’ reading skill and how the students’ responses to the use of translation method in the teaching and learning process. This research is a classroom action research. The participant is 39 students. The research instrument used is in the form of observation checklist, test, and questioners. The finding of the research shows that the implementation of translation improves the students’ reading skill in the teaching process and the test result. The result of evaluation which carried out in end of the cycle I obtained that the lowest score is 40 and the highest score is 82 then the average score is 58.1, cycle II gets the lowest score is 50 and the highest score is 85 then the average score is 60,9, and cycle III get the lowest score is 60 and the highest score is 85 and the average score is 65.8. Therefore, it can be concluded that the translation method can improve the students’ reading skill of grade VII D of MTs. Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta and the students’ responses are positive when the teacher applied translation method in teaching and learning process.

Abstract

Tujuan pelatihan dan pendampingan adalah untuk meningkatkan kemampuan pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris siswa netra berbasis Audiolingual di yayasan Yaketunis agar memiliki kesempatan belajar sehingga diharapkan bahwa para siswa ini memiliki kemampuan berbahasa Inggris yang sama baiknya dengan anak normal lainnya. Pengabdian ini dilaksanakan di Yaketunis, sebuah yayasan yang didedikasikan untuk anak penyandang tuna netra. Pengabdian ini menggunakan metode pelatihan dan pendampingan. Pelatihan dilakukan dengan pengajaran klasikal yang berfokus pada pembentukan kalimat sederhana dan pengucapan yang tepat. Pelatihan dilaksanakan dengan metode audiolingual dan menggunakan variasi drills seperti Repetition, Replacement, Completion, Transportation, dan Expansion. Pendampingan dilakukan dengan teknik menghafal dialog (Dialogue Memorization Technique) dan dipraktekan dengan menggunakan teknik pengembangan dialog (Backward Bulld-up /Expansion Drill). Selanjutnya, pengajaran klasikal dengan menggunakan metode audiolingual ini dilengkapi dengan media pembelajaran yaitu British Council Podcast. Hasil kegiatan ini yaitu peningkatan kemampuan bahasa Inggris siswa netra dalam pembentukan kalimat sederhana  dan pengucapan yang benar dengan menggunakan metode pembelajaran audiolingual.

Abstract

Historically historical literature has cultural roots especially in the development of the character of the values of local wisdom. In addition to the development of literary history culture can be one of the references in the process of writing historiography. This study aims to find the values of local wisdom in the work of historical literature. This research uses historical method. The conclusion in this study finds that the historical literature that developed in Java expressed the literary writer's poetry. Culturally, the contents of historical literature reflect the strategy of enculturation of the values of theroyal family's wisdom to the Javanese community. The suggestion in this study is to develop a further study of other forms of enculturation in historical literature in the development of local wisdom values of the Javanese community.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the effectiveness of using the ONLINE game to teach writing in the EFL classroom in Indonesia. It based on the research problem that the students find difficulties on memorizing English words because they used ineffective strategy.The research used experimental research design. The population in this research was the student of EFL classroom in INDONESIA, then the sample was the 8th grade in the EFL classroom in INDONESIA. The samples were taken by using random sampling technique. This research was conducted in 3 stages: data collection, action and data analysis. The data were collected through test, observation, and questionnaire. The data were analyzed by using the steps of: normality test, homogeneity test, inferential analysis, determining hypothesis testing, and conclusion.The result of this research presents that the onlines game strategy is effective to teach writing at the university level. The hypothesis is determined into the Null hypothesis (H0) and Alternative Hypothesis (Ha). H0 is accepted if the significance value >0.05 and Ha is rejected. The control group’s mean score on the pre-test is 58,11 increases to 59 in post-test with gain point 0,89. The experiment group’s mean score on pre-test was 57,59 increased to 60,89 on post-test with gain point 3,3.
