Abstract

Several herbs have been evaluated as feed additive for chicken, namely tumeric, white tumeric, javanese ginger and black ginger. The purpose of the research was to examine antibacterial activity (inhibition diameter zone and minimum inhibition concentration test) on several herbs extract toward Escherichia coli. In the experiment, there were 6 treatments namely aquadest 100% (A0), antibiotic tetracycline (A1), tumeric extract (A2), white tumeric extract (A3), javanese ginger extract (A4) and black ginger extract (A5) in response to inhibit Escherichia coli. Variables measured were inhibition diameter zone and minimum inhibition concentration test against challenge on Escherichia coli. The experiment was arranged in one way nested ANOVA based on completely randomized design and if there were different effects among variables it would be tested by Duncan’s multiple range test. The result showed that the use of turmeric extract gave highly significant inhibition diameter zone for Escherichia coli (P<0,01), further test indicated that as low as 50% (w/v) concentration of turmeric extract was enable to show as minimum concentration of inhibition against Escherichia coli. The conclusion of this research was among the herbs, selected turmeric extract showed the highest inhibition diameter zone if challance against Escherichia coli with minimum inhibition concentration of 50% (w/v).   Keywords : herbs extract, Escherichia coli, inhibition

Abstract

The purpose of the research was to study the effects of feeding inulin derived from dahlia tuber powder and extract on the existence of bacteria and growth of caecum in crossbred native chicken starter period. Experimental animals were 280 birds of unsex crossbred native chicken and source of inulin derived from dahlia tuber in the form of powders and extract which were started to be fed on day 22. The present experiment was assigned in completely randomized design with 7 treatments and 4 replications (10 birds each). Feeding treatments were as follows: T0 (basal diet/BD), T1 (BD +0.4% powder of dahlia tuber), T2 (BD +0.8% powder of dahlia tuber), T3 (BD +1.2% powder of dahlia tuber), T4 (BD +0.39% extract of dahlia tuber), T5 (BD +0.78% extract of dahlia tuber) and T6 (BD +1.17% extract of dahlia tuber). Parameter measured were lactic acid bacteria (LAB), Escherichia coli, pH of caecum, height dan weight of caecum. Data were subjected to ANOVA and followed by Duncan. The results indicated that feeding inulin derived from dahlia tuber powder form at 0.8% (T2) and extract form at 1.17% (T6) could increase lactic acid bacteria population, low pH and Escherichia coli, increased height and weight of caecum. In conclusion, feeding inulin derived from dahlia tuber powder at 0.8% (T2) and extract formed at 1.17% (T6) could increase lactic acid bacteria, but on the contrary, it decreased intestinal pH and Escherichia coli population as well as increased height and weight of caecum. Abstract

Data on live weight (LW) at 550 days of age and body measurements such as withers height (WH), body length (BL) and heart girth (HG) of Aceh bull and heifer have been collected from 79 animals (39 males and 40 females) managed at the Indrapuri’s Breeding and Forages Centre (IBFC) of Aceh Cattle, Indrapuri District, Aceh Besar Regency, Aceh Province, Indonesia to estimate the LW from body measurements. The overall means (+ SD) for LW, WH, BL and HG of Aceh cattle over sexes were 129.37 + 30.84 kg, 96.59 + 7.11 cm, 93.10 + 11.77 cm and 118.15 + 11.08 cm, respectively. The study revealed that HG was the best predictor of LW and this variable alone contributed 70% (female), 86% (male) and 74% (all animals) of the variation in the LW of Aceh cattle. It was concluded that highest determination coefficient (R2) value of simple linear regression model was found on model LW (kg) = -172.47 + 2.59HG (cm), whereas this model were more effective and efficient for predicting the LW of male Aceh cattle. Key words: Aceh cattle, body measurements, live weight estimation, regression models.
