Abstract

ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to investigate whether there is (1) a difference in the speaking ability between students who are taught by using discussion technique and those taught by using the conventional technique; (2) an effect of interaction between the speaking techniques applied and English learning motivation toward students’ speaking ability; (3) a difference in speaking ability between students with high English learning motivation who are taught by using discussion technique  and those taught by using the conventional technique; and (4) a difference in speaking ability between students with low English learning motivation who are taught by using discussion technique and those taught by using the conventional technique. The study used a 2X2 factorial design, which involved a sample of 96 students. The data were collected by using questionnaire and a speaking test then analyzed by Two-way ANOVA. The result indicates that (1) there was a significant difference in speaking ability between the students who were taught by using discussion technique and those taught by using the conventional technique; (2) there was a significant interactional effect between the teaching techniques applied and students’ motivation toward their speaking ability; (3) there was a significant difference in speaking ability between students with high English learning motivation who were taught by using discussion technique and those taught with the conventional technique; and (4) there was significant difference in speaking ability between the students with low English learning motivation who were taught by using discussion technique and those taught with the conventional technique.   Key words:  discussion technique, motivation, speaking ability

Abstract

This study aims at finding the effect of process and product approaches to the eighth grade students of SMP Harapan 1 Denpasar on their  competency in writing different types of texts. This is an experimental study with post-test only comparison group design using 2 x 3 factorial design. The results of the study are: 1) there is a significant  difference of process and product approach on the students’ writing competency, 2) there is a significant difference on the students’ competency in writing narrative paragraph between process and product approach group, 3) there is a significant difference on the students’ competency in writing recount paragraph between process and product approach group, 4) there is a significant difference on the students’ competency in writing descriptive paragraph between   process and product approach group,5) there is an interaction between the writing approaches and types of texts. Abstract

Abstract   This study aimed at (1) describing how English teachers at Middle Years of Sekolah Buin Batu (SBB) develop curriculum; (2) describing how English teachers at Middle Years of SBB determine learning resources;(3) describing how English teachers at Middle Years of SBB deliver learning activities, and; (4) describing how English teachers at Middle Years assess students’ learning progress. The subjects of the study were the English teachers and students at Middle Years of SBB in the academic year 2011/2012. The data were collected using some methods of data collection namely interview, observation, and documentation. Interview and documentation were used to collect data of curriculum and learning resources while interview, observation, and documentation were used to collect data of learning activities and assessment. The result of the study indicated that (1) English teachers at Middle Years of SBB develop curriculum. The teachers develop curriculum based on curriculum development procedure which covers the stages in team development and common understanding of curriculum development at SBB including inventory making, need analysis, drafting, verification, validation, finishing, approval, filing and archiving; (2) English teachers at Middle Years of SBB use various types of resources and identify teaching learning resources based on teachers’ planning to achieve teaching learning objectives, propose to school leaders, request the resources through administration staff, purchase the resources after the Purchase Order (PO) is approved by Finance and Admin Manager; (3) English teachers at Middle years of SBB teach English based on Year level and use various types of methods recognizing every individual abilities and learning styles (4) English teachers at Middle Years of SBB employ various kinds of assessment techniques based on the school assessment policy and the learning objectives   Keywords: ELT, Curriculum Development, Learning Resources, Learning Activities, Learning Assessment

Abstract

Abstrak Artikel ini mengenai pandangan mahasiswa dan dosen terhadap pentingnya strategi motivasi pada proses pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris, yang bertujuan untuk: (1) mengetahui pandangan mahasiswa tentang pentingnya  strategi motivasi tertentu dalam proses belajar-mengajar bahasa Inggris; (2) pandangan dosen tentang pentingnya  strategi motivasi tertentu dalam proses belajar-mengajar bahasa Inggris; (3) membandingkan pandangan mahasiswa dan dosen tentang pentingnya  strategi motivasi tertentu dalam proses belajar-mengajar bahasa Inggris; (4) mengamati penerapan strategi motivasi yang diterapkan dosen dalam proses belajar-mengajar bahasa Inggris.tentang pentingnya  strategi motivasi tertentu dalam proses belajar-mengajar bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini didasari oleh teori strategi memotivasi Dornyei (2001). Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah explanatory mixed method design. Berdasarkan analisis data kuantitatif, yang kemudian dikelompokkan berdarkan rumus Nurkacana’s (1992), hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa: dimensi menciptakan kondisi motivasi dasar dipandang penting oleh mahasiswa (cI=4.22) dan dosen (cI=4.43); dimensi membangkitkan motivasi awal dipandang penting oleh  mahasiswa (cII=3.82) dan sangat penting oleh dosen (cII  = 4.70); dimensi memelihara dan menjaga motivasi dipandang penting oleh mahasiswa (cIII=3.99) dan sangat penting oleh dosen (cIII=4.54), dimensi dan strategi evaluasi yang positif dipandang penting baik oleh mahasiswa (cIV=3.61) maupun dosen (cIV=4.40). Namun terdapat beberapa perbedaan pendapat mengenai penerapan strategi motivasi tertentu dalam masing-masing dimensi. Didalam penerapannya, dosen menerapkan sebagian besar strategi memotivasi pada keempat dimensi yang disarankan Dornyei, dan terdapat beberapa strategi yang belum diterapkan oleh para dosen.   Kata Kunci: strategi motivasi, pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, pembelajar dewasa, pandangan mahasiswa, pandangan dosen. Abstract This article is concerned with the study on students and lecturers’ perspectives on the importance of motivational strategy in English language teaching and learning process, which aims at investigating: (1) Students’ perspectives on the importance of motivational strategies helping them in the foreign language teaching and learning process; (2) lecturers’ perspectives on the importance of motivational strategies that should be applied in foreign language teaching and learning process; (3) The comparison between students and lecturers’ perspectives on the importance of motivational strategies in foreign language teaching and learning process; (4) Lecturers’ implementation of motivational strategies in the foreign language teaching and learning process. The motivational strategies used were based on Dornyei’s theory (Dornyei, 2001), that consists of four important dimensions: creating basic motivational conditions, generating initial motivation, maintaining and protecting motivation, and creating positive evaluation. The data of this study were collected by means of some methods of data collections, such as: questionnaires, observation, and interview. There were two kinds of questionnaires used in this study: questionnaires for students and questionnaires for lecturers, which were adapted and have been translated from Dornyei’s (2001) theory on motivational strategies. Based on the quantitative data analysis, which was further categorized using Nurkacana’s formula (1992), the result of this study revealed that: the dimension of creating basic motivational conditions is considered important  for both students (cI=4.22) and lecturers (cI=4.43); the dimension of generating initial motivation is considered important for students (cII=3.82) and very important for lecturers (cII=4.70); the dimension of  maintaining and protecting motivation is considered important for students (cIII=3.99) and very important for lecturers (cIII=4.54), and creating positive evaluation is considered important for both students (cIV=3.61) and lecturers (cIV=4.40). Moreover, there are some strategies proposed by Dornyei (2001) that were not applied by the lecturers.   Keywords: motivational strategy, English language learning, adult learner, students’ perspectives, lecturers’ perspectives.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aimed at developing good reading comprehension materials for reading I course in English Education Departement of FKIP Mahasaraswati University Denpasar. It was developed by using the Research and Development proposed by Sugiyono (2010). The content of the product was based on Competency Standard and Basic Competency mentioned in the syllabus. The reading materials which have been provided for the first semester of reading I course in the English Education Department of FKIP Mahasaraswati University Denpasar based on the criteria of a good reading material, involved the reading comprehension materials for reading I course that are relevant to convey the topic of (1) Grief and Escape, (2) Speech Production, (3) Career Women, (4) Visiting Bali, (5) “Ada Apa dengan Cinta?”, and (6) How to make Ice Cream. The reading comprehension materials, which should be developed, involved the skill of (1) understanding text organization, (2) inferring, (3) evaluating the text, (4) predicting, (5) understanding the writer’s style, and (6) dealing with unfamiliar words. The reading materials were corrected by the expert judges and field tested. The product, which was in the form of reading materials, was tried out twice. Firstly, it was tried out to the forty two students of the first grade students and one lecturer in the English Education Department of FKIP Mahasaraswati University Denpasar. The result of the analysis showed that there were some invalid items. Then, the product was revised. Secondly, it was tried out in the class I B and ten lecturers in the English Education Department of FKIP Mahasaraswati University Denpasar. The results of the analysis showed that all of the items were valid. The product did not need to be revised again. Therefore, it could be used for reading I course for the first grade students in the English Education Department of FKIP Mahasaraswati University Denpasar.   Keywords: materials and reading comprehension

Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate teachers’ knowledge about effective classroom management and their classroom management practices for teaching English in SD Cipta Dharma Denpasar. It was also investigating the correspondence between teachers’ knowledge and the practices. This study designed using qualitative case study approach. The data was obtained using multiple-choice typed test, observation checklist, and interview. The subjects were four English teachers and their students as supporting subject. The data obtained was analyzed using interactive model proposed by Miles and Huberman. The data revealed that the subjects had variety of knowledge about classroom management; one of them had sufficient knowledge , another one showed average result and the other two were emerging. In their classroom management practice, two teachers performed effective classroom management skill, but the other two showed average effort in managing their class. For the correspondence, it was found that there were three group of teachers; the first group has sufficient knowledge and applied it simultaneously, the second group has average knowledge but applied it in more effective ways, and the third group has emerging knowledge and applied it likely to be the same as their knowledge in the classroom management practice. Abstract

Abstrak   Rendahnya kemampuan memahami bacaan oleh siswa SMP menjadi dasar dari penelitian ini. Tujuan penelitian adalah untuk menginvestigasi efek dari musik latar pada kemampuan memahami isi bacaan oleh siswa SMP. Selain itu, perbedaan jender siswa juga digunakan sebagai variabel moderator. Populasi penelitian tersebar pada sepuluh kelas dan melalui teknik sampel acak, di dapat dua kelas yang kemudian di kelompokkan menjadi grup eksperimen dan grup kontrol. Secara kesuluruhan, jumlah sampel yang digunakan dalam penelitian adalah 80 sampel. Untuk memeperoleh data penelitian, digunakan skor dari postes yang kemudian di olah dengan dua metode statistik yaitu statistik deskriptif dan inferensial. Di akhir investigasi, ditemukan bahwa (1) ada perbedaan yang signifikan pada kemampuan memahami bacaan anatara siswa yang diajar dengan mengunakan perlakuan musik latar dengan siswa yang diajar tanpa musik latar (2) ada perbedaan yang signifikan pada kemampuan memahami bacaan antara siswa perempuan dengan siswa laki – laki. (3) terdapat interaksi antara perlakuan musik latar dan teknik konvensional dan juga jender pada kemampuan membaca siswa SMP, (4) terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan pada siswa perempuan yang diberi perlakuan musik latar dengan siswa perempuan yang tidak diberi perlakuan musik latar, dan (5) tidak terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan pada siswa laki – laki yang diberi perlakuan musik latar dengan siswa laki – laki yang tidak diberi perlakuan dengan musik latar.   Kata Kunci: Musik latar, jender, pemahaman membaca, teknik mengajar konvensional.

Abstract

Abstract This study focused oninvestigatingthe main effect of MCSR on second semester students’ reading competency and the differential affect of MCSR between the students with good vocabulary mastery and with poor vocabulary mastery on students’ reading competencyin EESP of Unmas Denpasar.The findings show thatthe students taught usingMCSRachieved better reading competency than those who were taught usingconventional teaching. Furthermore, there is an interactional effect between teaching strategies and vocabulary masteryon students’ reading competency.The students with good vocabulary masteryimproved their reading competency when beingtaughtusingMCSR than usingconventional teaching.On the other hand, there is no difference in reading competency between the students who havepoor vocabulary mastery taughtwithMCSR and withconventional study.It can be concluded that this study provides an empirical evidence of the importance of the teaching strategy considering vocabulary mastery in English reading instructions. Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aimed at describing the English literacy coverage of grade 5 students of Primary Schools in Bali, developing materials to support grade 5 students’ English literacy skills, and investigating the quality and the effectiveness of the developed materials in supporting grade 5 students’ English literacy skills. The subjects of this study were the grade 5 students of  Public Primary Schools in Bali. The data were gathered through documentation, expert judgment, observation, syllabus analysis, conducting test and questionnaires. Based on the competency standard and the basic competence in the syllabus, the English Literacy coverage were about understanding and copying some simple texts and sentences. The materials that need to be developed were based on the topics in the syllabus used by the schools. The developed materials were classified into 4 topics: Animals, Food and Drink, Classroom Objects, and Public Places. The materials designed were emphasized on the practices of English literacy skills which consisted of Topical Vocabulary, Grammar Focus, Everyday Expression, Language Games and Time for Story.  The quality measurement showed Sr<4.485=3.6<4.485, means that the materials were categorized as good materials. The effectiveness of measurement showed that the materials of Rich Language Learning Environment are effective to support the grade 5 students’ English Literacy Skills.   Keywords: TEYL, Literacy Skills, Rich Language Learning Environment

Abstract

Abstract This study aims at investigating the effect of desuggestopedia on writing competence of the second semester students with different temperaments, of FKIP UNMAS Denpasar. The problems of this study were formulated into two major points: 1) the effect of desuggestopedia on students’ writing competence, 2) interaction between desuggestopedia and the temperament. This study was designed with experimental research and instruments being used were lesson plans, posttest, writing rubric, and questionnaire. It used intact random sampling which is one type of probability sampling technique. As a result, two classes from seven classes were chosen, one as the experimental group and the other as the control group. The research instruments used to obtain the data in this research were in the form of tests which were analyzed using descriptive analysis and Statistical Two-Way ANOVA. There were 2 findings in this research: 1) there was significant different effect on students’ writing competence between the students who were taught by using Desuggestopedia and those who were taught by conventional technique, 2) there was not significant interaction effect between desuggestopedia and students’ temperament on students’ writing competence.
