Abstract

This article deconstructs the dominant constructions and portrayals of the Muslim world in literature on social media and civic engagement in relation to the Arab Spring. A critical reading of literature on social media and ‘Arab Spring’ shows that analyses by Western scholars and commentators are still grounded in ‘modernist dualism’ and orientalist understandings. The article starts by tracing the history of technology to argue that analyses of social media’s educational and civic potential within the Western context in general, is continuation of arguments about earlier technologies in relation to societal development. However, when it comes to analyzing social media and civic engagement particularly in the Muslim world this tendency gets muddled with another well-established trend, that of Orientalism. The overall impact of this tendency results in restricting majority of arguments within the essentialists/determinists paradigm. Such analyses essentialize the technological aspects of social media as universal and constitute the West as civilized, democratic, multicultural, and progressive. On the other hand Muslim world is represented as uncivilized, undemocratic, uncultured, and chained in past traditions. Thus, there is a need for a nuanced understanding of the relationship between the social media and civic engagement in the Muslim world, which can be conceptualized by framing the issues within a postcolonial critique of neoliberal globalization. DOI: 10.15408/tjems.v1i2.1264

Abstract

The result of this research reveals that critical thinking skills possessed by the students in the pesantren has been developed through several learning approaches implemented during learning process in the pesantren. Among the approaches are critical awareness on the study of classical books (bahtsul masâil), discussion and debate in which students and teachers are equal in presenting ideas (cooperative and collaborative strategies are also embedded in this approach), and problem solving approach in which contextual issues are posed and solved. While creating students to be critical, such approaches were found to preserve students’ moral attitude to the teachers that has been skeptically seen will be deminished. DOI: 10.15408/tjems.v1i2.1265

Abstract

Globalization has been affecting many aspects of human life, such as, social, politics, economic, culture, information and communication, and education. The development of technologyy in globalization era has brought society into wider world. Connection among individuals becomes easier. What happen in one part of the world can be instantly accessed by others in other part of the world. Information and knowledge can effortlessly be obtained from various sources of technology, such as, radio, television, internet, newspaper and magazines. This situation brings about consequences on education. Modern schools, crative teachers, high performance students are among consequences of the development of technology. Islamic schools, as part of schools, should be able to respond this situation in order not to be left behind. While some efforts might be taken to improve the quality of Islamic educational institutions, such as improving learning quality, preparing competitive graduates both from Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) and Islamic schools (madrasah), pesantren and madrasah are encouraged to preserve their characteristics that have existed for years. DOI: 10.15408/tjems.v1i2.1266

Abstract

This paper aims at describing teaching and learning activities in chemistry lesson through environmental-based (contextual-based)  experiments that are viewed from the perspective of Islam. Islam teaches its followers to study their environment in order to find solution for many problems. One of the problems posed by chemistry teachers with regards to conducting chemistry experiments is the lack of laboratory equipments. In fact, if environment has been studied well, Islam has provided anything we need including the need to conduct chemistry experiment. Verses in Quran, especially al-Baqarah: 185, an-Nisa: 28, al-Hajj: 78, and Hud: 61 implied that our environment provides more than enough for us to do experiments. The problem of not doing the experiments was that because teachers are not studying their environment well enough. This paper describes some ideas in which environment helps chemistry teachers to be able to conduct chemistry experiments without losing the chemistry concept. DOI: 10.15408/tjems.v1i2.1267

Abstract

Islamic values should be built in educational institution as early as possible, at least from elementary school. It might be rather difficult to think of Islamic values being taught in the elementary school, especially in social studies subject. One idea was by focusing students learning process on the development of certain values, such as, wealthiness, fairness, honesty, responsibility, and prohibition of practicing usury. Educating the students with those values were believed to contribute to the development of Islamic values in later age. This paper provides some ideas within which the mentioned values were taught in elementary school. DOI: 10.15408/tjems.v1i2.1268

Abstract

Building nation’s characters is an interesting issue to discuss. The issue cannot be separated from other issues within the nation. In this case, education plays a significant role. Education has to be able to lead the nation to solve various problems, including the changing values and its implication. It is important to note how education can contribute to the process of revitalization of cultural values within the context of social changes. Indonesian education is very fortunate to have Pancasila as its basic principle. Actualization of the values of Pancasila can be seen as a promising alternative in developing nation’s characters and culture.  Pancasila is the core of national philosophy and ideology that has been formulated based on Indonesia’s culture and religions. It is important to note that the spirit of Pancasila is manifest in the formulation of the objectives of the national education. DOI: 10.15408/tjems.v1i2.1269

Abstract

Law No. 4/1950 Jo. Law No. 14/1954 stated that the purpose of education was to create a moral human being.  It was interpreted that moral human being could be created not only through religion because the basis of moral was not always religion.  Therefore, in the 1950s religion was not compulsorily taught at school.  At later stage, as stipulated in Law No. 2/1989 that education was to create a complete human being devoting to God Almighty One, religion was a compulsory at school.  The gap between these laws was that school with certain religion was not required to teach other different religions.  This stipulation has later become problematic.  In 2003, Law No 20 about national education system was enacted emphasizing the existence of religion education.  This law mandated that religion was a compulsory in every education institution whereby the subject matters to be suited to the students and taught by the relevant teacher.  It has been apparent that education has historically been improved from time to time. DOI: 10.15408/tjems.v1i2.1272
