Abstract

The studies on error correction have been laying their emphasis on grammatical structures of the language with lack of focus on non-grammatical aspect such as lexical collocation. Therefore, this study aims at investigating the effect of direct and indirect written corrective feedback on low-performing ESL learners. Ninety-two students of a public university involved in the study. Three intact groups that have equal proficiency were identified at the beginning of the university’s academic term. A quasi-experimental design was employed with two experimental groups receiving indirect WCF and direct WCF separately, and a control group deprived of any treatment. The groups were measured in three different time points with pre-test before the intervention, immediate post-test after the intervention, and delayed post-test to measure retention effect. One-way ANOVA and repeated-measures ANOVA were used to measure the effect. The findings reveal that significant differences were detected in immediate post-tests of direct and indirect WCF groups which indicate that both WCF strategies can enhance participants’ collocational competency. Additionally, the findings also show that direct WCF strategy greatly affects participants collocation errors despite both groups performed better than the control group. This study demonstrates that retention effect was detected in the group that received direct WCF while the indirect WCF group was not able to retain - in delayed post-test. Recommendation is also discussed for Future directions of studies.

Abstract

The advancement of Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) has significantly affected English language teaching, such as the utilization of miscellaneous applications, social media and other digital platforms facilitating the learners to invigorate their language skills, notably L2/FL writing context. However, insufficient attention has been addressed to the contributions of employing storybird to the learners’ narrative writing activities. To fill this void, this study aimed at delineating the contributions of employing storybird to the Indonesian EFL learners’ narrative writing activities. Three Indonesian junior high school learners participated as research participants. The data were gathered through semi-structured interview and analyzed with Thematic Analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006). The findings designated that storybird (1) generated ideas for writing a story (2) facilitated to construct generic structure of English narrative texts (3) considered lexicogrammatical features of English narrative texts (4) produced English narrative texts joyfully and (5) wrote English narrative texts actively. Given these facts, storybird enables the learners to think creatively, provides them enjoyable learning experiences, brings their abstract thoughts to real life and guide them to communicate and collaborate effectively.

Abstract

This study investigates the written test results of the Indonesian undergraduate students’ argumentative essay. For that reason, three research questions are made. 1). what is the level of achievement of the students in the argumentative essay quantitatively? 2). what aspects of an essay appear in respect to the argumentative essay generic structure as formulated? 3). how well did they use the rhetoric reputation and argument in their essay?. 27 handwriting' answer sheets of undergraduate English Department students enrolled at semester four of a state university in Indonesia were taken purposively. The data analysis uses a quantitative and qualitative approach. The results show that the students quantitatively achieved average score 76,74 which means good. All parts of generic structures were expressed in different quality. However; the organization of the essay is the lowest part compared to the other four parts respectively content, vocabulary, and language use seen from their segmented scores. This study is confirmed to be inline the previous study in that the majority of the students did not present the refutation section in both their English essays. This implies that teachers should be more aware of promoting this absent aspect as this refutation or rebuttal is a distinguishing marker in argumentative and discussion essays.

Abstract

The urgency of technology integration has arisen due to the current pandemic break. With a sudden shift from conventional learning to virtual learning, less proper preparation on utilizing the technology integration may occur. The present study aimed at unraveling the perception and obstacles faced during the implementation of videoconferencing as a speaking assessment medium. By applying qualitative research with a snapshot case study design in a vocational education institution, this study gained the data through questionnaires, focus group discussion, and an interview. As a result, the majority of the students perceived negatively toward the implementation of videoconferencing as a speaking assessment medium. These negative reactions occurred due to the nervousness and anxiety along the online speaking assessment process. Moreover, the obstacles faced, such as bad internet connection, technical problems, and surrounding disturbance, also contributed an impact on students’ language production and the sound heard by the students during the online speaking assessment. From the results of the present study, the application of videoconferencing as a medium in assessing students’ speaking ability needs to be reappraised to preview its function whether it can be used as an alternative way or it contributes a drawback effect during the assessment process.

Abstract

The influential work of H.P. Grice (1975) on Cooperative Principle has been extensively applied in both authentic and fictional contexts. Scholars in the field of pragmatics argued that non-observance of maxims lead into the creation of humor (Khosravizadeh and Sadehvandi, 2011; Jorfi and Dowlatabadi, 2015; Zeb, 2019; Kuang and Zhao, 2017) and character development (Pertiwi , 2013; Saradifa, 2020; Sembiring and Ghozalo, 2017). Built on this argument, the present study was conducted to confirm such claim by focusing on the instances of violating and flouting of maxims and the purpose it served in an intertwined context of reality and fiction in the television adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. Findings revealed that characters deliberately violated and flouted the maxims in order to avoid conflict and to also highlight information, which are deemed indispensable in building the narrative. This study also found instances of violation and flouting of maxims as a product of suppression of women characters that mirror gender inequalities in many parts of the globe.
