Abstract

Study on bio-ecological aspect of bony tongue (Scleropages jardinii) was done in Merauke, Papua Province on May 1997.The aims of this study are to know the aspects of reproduction, behavior, habitat, and conservation. The results recorded fecundity between 87 -161 eggs, fertility 45-84. This fish is a predator and carnivorous. Water quality is suitable for fish life as well as their reproduction. Conservation action is urgently important.

Abstract

Biodiversity of Basidiomycetes was studied in Kelila, Jayawijaya, Papua.The aim of this observation was to identify species diversity of Basidiomycetes and their utilities. Sixty one species were found in the location. The 19 species were edible mushroom while 7 species have been used as traditional medicines and some species have a common odours (smell) and 1 species (Clavatia sp.) contains clavatin which could be used as arm tumour agent.

Abstract

Cellulolytic Candida sp.was isolated from Wamena, Papua.The strain was able to grow in media with carboxymethyl cellulose as a sole carbon source implying that the isolate produced 1-3 oc endo-gluconase.To study the effect of glucose and osmotic pressure on 0.1% glucose and 0.1% NaCl were augmented to CMC-contained media.Glucose augmentation affects cellulolytic activity of culture,probably due to higher biomass production in media. NaCl addition appear not to affect cellulolytic ability. Profile of pH also varied depend on the cultivation media. Maximum growth rate was achieved when glucose was added which was implying that glucose stimulate cell growth.

Abstract

Papua possesses high biodiversity and several ethnics.Muyu community at Soa Village, Merauke still has a close relationship with their surroundings, as found in the usage of natural medicine, traditional food and ritual ceremony.A research was conducted at Soa Village and surroundings, Merauke, Papua by open-ended discussion and observation methods.There are 37 species used to cure 26 kinds of diseases as traditional medicines by Muyu Tribe community. Commonly, they use the plants still in wild position, gathered from village surrounding and parts of plant used namely bark, root and leaves.Many kinds of traditional food as staple food like sago (Metroxylon sagu).Wati (Piper methysticum) is used in ritual ceremony.

Abstract

The objective of the ethnoecology study of the Dani-Baliem society is to know the relationship between Dani-Baliem society and their environment.This study covers the perception and traditional management system of environment by the Dani-Baliem society, and also the impact of their activities to the environment change in Baliem Valley. This study is expected to determine the change of plant diversty, which happened, and to reconstruct this change from pre-historic era to the present time.The methods used in this study based on anthropological, ecological, paleoecological and bibliography study.The result showed the ecosystem change in the Baliem valley since 26.000 BP.It was indicated by Carbon content as a result of fired activities in the base of valley sedimentation.Since 7000 years ago, the impact of human activities in the Baliem valley area is significant. It is indicated by organic material sedimentation.This environment change continue untill now and relate to the intensity of human activities intervention. These human activities cause many enironment units which has physical and biological characteristics. By using floristic analysis in each environment unit, it can be seen the change of plant diversity composition in this area.

Abstract

The population of wiep (Grevillea papuana) originated from Papua, decreased because of over cutting or over exploitation for timber, ornamental or medicine. Experiment was carried out to propagate wiep by using tissue culture method.Hypocotyls,cotyledons and nodes from seedlings grown in vitro, were used as explants. These explants were grown on Murashige & Skoog medium which macro and micronutrients were half strength, with or without hormones (BA 1 mg/1, BA 1 mg/1 + NAA 0,5 mg/1, BA2 mg/1 + NAA 0,5 mg/1, BA 1 mg/1 + 2,4-D 0,5 mg/1, and BA 2 mg/1 + 2,4-D 0,5 mg/1). All explants did not produce callus on medium without hormones, but produced callus with hormones except BA treatment on cotyledon explants. Bigger callus were produced by explants that were treated by combination BA with NAA or 2,4-D compare to those treated by BA only. Nodes and hypocotyls could produce shoots, but cotyledons did not. Three kinds of explants did not produce any roots. Node is the best explants for producing shoots. Combination of BA 1 mg/1 and 2,4-D 0,5 mg/1 caused synergistic effect to stimulate shoot production of wiep hypocotyls explants.

Abstract

The richness of biological resources (biodiversity) in mountainous area of Papua is an asset that has to be preserved.Exploitation of natural resources often cause damage on those biological assets and as genetic resources.Care has to be taken to overcome the situation of biological degradation, and alternate steps had been shaped on ex-situ biological conservation. Wamena Biological Gardens, as an ex-situ biological conservation, has been established to keep the high mountain biological and its genetic resources in Papua.

Abstract

Enzymatic activities in soil as due to microbes action in organic matter degradation, lead to propose as indicators for determining soil degree enrichment.In this work, the enzymatic activities of cellulase, invertase and amylase were determined in tropical soil collected from Biological Research Station in Wamena. Result of measurement on five soil samples showed that cellulase activity occurred between 0.10 - 0.31 mg reducing sugar/g soil/hour in 2% Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) substrate, and about 0.15 - 0.25 mg reducing sugar/g soil/hour in 0.5% Avicel substrate.Amylase and invertase assayed in 6% of amylum and 6% of sucrose substrates correspondingly; and its activities between 2.55 - 3.54 and 0.59 - 1.30 mg reducing sugar/g soil/hour, respectively. Correlation of enzymatic activities and soil organic-C content (1.35 - 2.70%) of soil layer was significant in selulase and amilase, but it was poor correlation in invertase activity.

Abstract

Pseudomonas bacteria plays essential role in soil ecology such as decomposer and biological control. The bacteria were isolated on selective media and identified from five soil samples taken within area of Wamena Biological Gardens.There are six species Pseudomonas were indentified based on morphological characters and biochemical reaction.P. striata was found to be common in soil of the area.No pathogen Pseudomonas was indentified in all soil samples. Preliminary study on biological control for fungal pathogen Fusarium indicated that P. fluorescens, P. striata and P. cepacia have ability to inhibit Fusarium growth in vitro.
