Abstract

Students’ perceptions of the language learning have been a fascinating topic for researchers as they can be as reflection for the improvement of the teaching and learning of English especially speaking. The present study aims to investigate the students’ perception of the drama activity in speaking class. It was designed in qualitative research method. The research subject was the fourth semester students of English Department at University of Riau Kepulauan. The data was collected through the content analysis by means of rubric and reflection sheet. With the help of these instruments, the results and the analysis of reflection sheets and rubric reveals the students had positive perception of drama activity in speaking class in terms of building self-confidence, fun, emerging acting skill, improving vocabulary, and building teamwork.

Abstract

This thesis aims to define the factors of students’ speaking anxiety and how the students’ strategies to overcome speaking anxiety in the class room. The problem in this research is anxiety of tenth grade students SMK Indomalay School Batam to speak in classroom. Based on the issues above, the purpose of this researcher is to define the factor causing of speaking anxiety and how the students' strategies to overcome speaking anxiety. This research is qualitative descriptive. The subject in this study is tenth grade of SMK Indomalay School Batam in Academic year 2015/2016. The totally number is 22 students.  The data collected by Interview and questionnaire. The results showed that the factor causing of the students' speaking anxiety to speak in the language classroom are:  lack of familiarity of task, fear of making mistakes, low motivation, incomprehensible inputs, lack of confidence and then low English proficiency. And the student’s strategies to overcome speaking anxiety were peer seeking, preparation, relaxation, positive thinking and resignation. Keywords: students’ anxiety, speaking

Abstract

The objective of the study is aimed to know the effect of Problem Based Learning Strategy on Enhancing Students’ Grammar Ability in Passive Voice. The research design was experiment research. The population in this research was selected by simple random sampling technique. The instrument of research used grammar test. Test was given in pre-test and post-test form. The data were analyzed by using quantitave method. Then, the researcher analyzed the research by using t-test formula. The findings indicated that score of students in post-test is highest compared post-test after Problem Based Learning Strategy on grammar ability in passive voice. The average score of students in pre-test experimental class are 62.91. and the average score of students in post-test experimental class are 74.16. the research showed that the value of t-count is 19.984 and the df (degree of freedom) is 22. The values in the table of significance of 5%, df = 22 is 2.0738. the hypothesis showed t-count is higher than t-table, namely 19.984 2.0738. it means that Problem Based Learning Strategy gives an effect on enhancing students’ grammar ability in passive voice. Based on the finding above, Problem Based Learning Strategy can be suggested as one of strategy to be implemented in teaching learning process of grammar activities. It is aimed to make the students interested, so become more creative and motivate in learning English.

Abstract

Based on syllabus, junior high school students learned about degrees of comparison. The purpose of this study is to know how far the eighth grade students of SMP Clarissa Batam in mastering of degrees of comparison. the research type of this study is qualitative research, the population in this research was twenty two students. The research focused in SMP Clarissa Batam and was held on may until June 2017. The data was collected from students by giving test. Then, the writer analyzed the data to know how the students master in degrees of comparison. After that, the writer interviewed some students to know their difficulties in mastering degrees of comparison. the result showed that from 22 students of eighth grade students of SMP Clarissa Batam, only 6  (27.3%) students were able in mastering of degrees of comparison of adjective and there were 16 (72.7%) students are fail in it. it means most of eighth grade students of SMP Clarissa Batam did not master degrees of comparison well

Abstract

Lecturers are no longer occupying the single position in conveying knowledge to the digital natives. Hence, they have to adapt the effect of the fourth industrial revolution in the teaching learning process through hybrid learning which combine the face-to-face classroom to the online or offline technology. Thus, this study aims at measuring the students’ learning achievement in studying use kinds of media based blended learning at University of Riau Kepulauan, Batam Indonesia. It was a quasi-experimental method with nonequivalent control group design. The population was all of the sixth semester students with purposive sampling technique. The instrument was in the form of written test which have been validated and reliable previously. The data were measured statistically use T-test. The result exposed that pre-test and post-test marks of the two groups revealed a notable enhancement. It recommends to instructors, or curriculum designer in applying such media based vitual learning to encourage learners’ accomplishment.

Abstract

This research was about Monitor Comprehension Strategy (MCS) to the reading comprehension of students in class 8 SMPN 9 Batam in academic year 2015/2016. The purpose of this study was to find the influence of strategy on reading comprehension of students. To get the purpose of the study, researchers conducted research experiments. 5QAAnumber of students is 210. Researchers used a purposive sampling technique to determine the grade of research. The subject was VIII.4 and VIII.7 classes totaling 30 students each class. Researchers conduct research in two classes. The first class (VIII.4) as experimental class and the second class (VIII.7) as the control class. In analyzing the data researchers used quantitative calculation to find the result. Data were analyzed showed significant differences before getting treatment for an average of 67.50 and 67.17 for the control class. The average score obtained student after getting treatment in the experimental class are 82.50 and 78.50. Based on these result, the use of Monitor comprehension strategy gives significant influence on student’s reading comprehension. Keywords: students’ reading comprehension, monitor comprehension strategy

Abstract

This research was concerned with the inquiry of the correlation between vocabulary mastery and English speaking ability of the tenth grade students of Senior High School 12 Palembang. Mastering vocabulary is much needed in order to be good in speaking ability. The problem of the study is to investigate the correlation between vocabulary mastery and English speaking ability of the tenth grade students of Senior High School 12 of Palembang. This is a quantitative study. The data collection is deliberated by adopting test and r Product Moment Correlation is used to analyze the data. Findings show that there is correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their English speaking ability. In respect to the data analysis of this study, it can be concluded that there was significant correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and students’ English speaking ability. It has been analyzed by test of vocabulary mastery and English speaking ability test. The result showed that the coefficient correlation of them was 0.630, rescpectively with the significance level 5% was 0.320. Therefore, alternative hypothesis ( ) is accepted while Null Hypothesis ( ) is rejected. The conclusion suggests that mastering vocabulary has significant role to improve students speaking ability.

Abstract

This research aimed to (1) know whether or not cognitive strategy can increase students’ skill in writing descriptive texts, and (2) know what factors can influence the increasing of those writing skills. This research categorized as action research which conducted in two cycles. Each cyles consisted of four times meeting. Each of them composed of plan, action, observation, dan reflection. The participant in this research was all 22 students of VII-2 SMPN I Indra Praja Tembilahan. The data was collected from (1) Observation sheet; students, teacher, lesson procedures/plan, (2) Field note, (3) Interview, and (4) Writing test. It was found in this research that the use of cognitive strategy can increase students’ skill in writing descriptive texts. The finding of this research shown that there was an increasing of students’ mean score above minimum criteria of minimum learning mastery standard (75).The factors that influenced students’ skill in writing descriptive text were (1) reading material given to students,(2) students’ motivation, and (3) teachers’ approach to students. It can be concluded that the application of cognitive strategy in teaching reading descriptive texts gave positive results shown by the increasing of students’ skill in reading descriptive texts.

Abstract

It is a qualitative study that focuses on how students apply their creating skill as seen in their compositions posted on Instagram. There were six tenth graders in one of the vocational high schools in Sidoarjo selected as the participants. They comprised three male students and three female students. The researcher collected the data in the form of written expressions (sentences) by observing students’ creating skill processes as seen in their compositions posted on Instagram. The data thenwere analyzedusing the elements of each Brookhart’s HOT skills of transfer, critical thinking, and problem-solving. The findings showed that the activities of composing narrative texts and posting them on the Instagram account belong to the real and meaningful transfer learning of near and far transfers. Next, students could fulfill seven out of eleven criteria of critical thinkingskill. Last, from five components of the IDEAL problem-solving skill, only the last component of looking back andevaluatingthe effects of the activity that the students did not do. All in all, theactual evidence of creating skill implementation when students created their compositions by using Instagram is possible to justify.

Abstract

The study was intended to investigate the relationship between listening anxiety and listening comprehension of high school students in Batam. This research was a correlational research that aimed to obtain the relationship between two variables, listening anxiety and listening comprehension. The data were collected by using two techniques, questionnaire, which was distributed to find out students’ listening anxiety level, while to find out students’ listening comprehension, a listening test was conducted. The data was analyzed by using Pearson Product-Moment correlation to obtain the degree of relationship between two variables (listening anxiety and listening comprehension). The finding of the research was that robtained  was -0,287 that means: (1) there was a negative correlation between listening anxiety and listening comprehension; (2) the correlation degree between listening anxiety and listening comprehension was low; (3) there was no significant correlation between listening anxiety and listening comprehension, as robtained  (-0,287)  is smaller compared to rtable (0,374) .
