Abstract

The discovery of internet has facilitated humans in their daily life such as in getting information, performed business transaction, etc. The occurence of social media since the 1990s has developed a new function of internet which enables the users to interact with each other virtually. Unfortunately, social media is suspected to cause phubbing behavior among internet users. A previous study has stated that the ‘like’ and ‘love’ responses in social media posts may cause a social media addiction in the users’ everyday life that can interfere with their daily activities. In this article, we explain briefly a review from neuroscience perspective on the emergence of addictive behavior in the use of social media in daily life.

Abstract

Pornography content is becoming an increasingly serious problem in Indonesia, where it is suspected that around 97% of 1,600 children and adolescents have been exposed to pornography. Various efforts have been made by the government to minimize the prevalence of pornography content, such as by blocking porn-suspected sites. It is also known that the exposure of massive and periodic pornography content to children and adolescents can result in adverse effects in the form of addiction. Research results with EEG (Edison, RE., et al) and fMRI (Prawiroharjo, P., et al) have reported changes in the brain activity of children and adolescents who were suspected as having addiction to pornography content. Interestingly, there is a tendency to a phenomenon of faking good among the subjects. This article discusses the phenomenon from the perspectives of psychology and neuroscience.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Exposure to environmental enrichment has a positive effect on brain function, including improved cognition. Environmental enrichment has many aspects, including social interactions, object stimulations, and physical activities. Exercise and environmental enrichment can be considered to improve cognitive function with different underlying mechanisms. This study aims to compare the effects of environmental enrichment and aerobic exercise at both synaptic and whole-organism levels using synapyophysin as a measure of synaptic physiology and spatial memory as a measure of cognitive function.METHODS: A six-week in vivo experimental study on 15, 6-month old male Wistar rats randomly divided into three groups (n=5): aerobic group (A), enriched environment group (EE), and enriched with an aerobic or combined group (EEA). All rats were tested four times in the Water-E maze (WEM) task at weeks 0, 2, 4, and 6 of the study. We used immunohistochemistry to determine the synaptophysin expression in hippocampal CA1 region.RESULTS: Based on synaptophysin immunostaining, there were higher optical density scores for synaptophysin in hippocampal CA1 region following EEA, but there were no statistically significant differences between groups (ANOVA test, p>0.05). The spatial memory test showed there were significantly reduced travel time and total errors from the 2nd and 4th weeks in the EEA group, respectively (p<0.05).CONCLUSION: The combination of enriched environment and aerobic exercise seems to rapidly improve spatial memory and enhances the presynaptic protein, synaptophysin in hippocampal CA1 region.KEYWORDS: aerobic exercise, environmental enrichment, spatial memory, synaptophysin, Water-E maze

Abstract

ABSTRACT Low back pain ranks second in disease in Indonesia and globally the prevalence of low back pain reaches 15% - 45%. Medical students have a high risk of experiencing low back pain because they spend more than six hours a day sitting during lectures. Sitting for a long time without changing position causes the muscles and posterior longitudinal ligament to become more tense, and oxygenation to the discs and other tissues is disrupted, which can cause low back pain. This study used an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional approach. The research used a questionnaire which was distributed to all students of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Bengkulu via Google form in May - June 2022. Sampling was carried out based on the total sampling technique. The number of research samples is 158 people. The relationship between the two variables was analyzed using chi square analysis. The results showed that the duration of sitting during distance learning had a significant relationship with low back pain with a significance value of 0.02 (p <0.05). The results of the study between the duration of sitting during distance learning and low back pain disability did not have a significant relationship with a significance value of 0.68 (p > 0.05). Sitting duration during distance learning is significantly associated with low back pain while sitting duration during distance learning does not have a significant relationship with low back pain disability. Keywords: Sitting Duration, Low Back Pain, Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). Kata Kunci: Durasi Duduk, Low Back Pain, Oswestry Disability Index (ODI).

Abstract

The Indonesia National Adolescent Mental Health Survey (I-NAMHS), over a third of all adolescents (34.9%) reported a mental health problem, with depression in third position in mental health problems (5.3%). High levels of physical activity and low sedentary behavior of athlete students have been associated with improved self-concept and reduced mental health problems, such as depression. As a result, depression has received little attention in this population. To describe the prevalence of symptoms of depression among athlete students at a single university. This cross-sectional study was administered to undergraduate students enrolled in physical education, faculty of teacher training, and education at the University of Bengkulu. Participants (n=70) completed the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) and a demographic questionnaire. Differences in symptoms of depression were calculated by gender. The prevalence of symptoms of depression, as measured on BDI-II, was 36%, and there is no significant gender difference in the prevalence of symptoms of depression (p>0.05, distributed between male and female participants (52% women and 24.4% men). The BDI-II identified the prevalence of symptoms of depression among athlete students. The symptoms of depression in female students were higher than in male students.
