Abstract

This paper examines and discusses the presence of individuals’ passion as a psychological construct that may cause entrepreneurial failure – with particular context and analysis to the failed nascent entrepreneurs in one of the largest port city in Sumatera island, Padang, Indonesia. This paper uses quantitative study with relational approach, and was undertaken with 180 failed nascent entrepreneurs in Padang. Data and information were collected by using a questionnaire as a cross-sectional cohort data and were further analyzed with Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) and supported by PLS 3.0 as the statistical tool. Both the process and the content framework were used to show the logic of methodology according to the dualistic model of passion) and their relationship with entrepreneurial failure. The study found that individuals’ harmonious passion in entrepreneurship should also be considered as a cause of entrepreneurial failure, meanwhile the obsessive passion is significantly found to influence entrepreneurial failure. This study implies that entrepreneurs should consider and make clear boundaries between psychological push and rationality when they start new ventures. This paper has value and originality in terms of the examination and analysis of individuals’ passion as a psychological construct that causes entrepreneurial failure. In different with other researches and studies which have merely viewed the passion as a source of entrepreneurial success, this study views and argues that individuals’ passion either is categorized as harmonious or obsessive passions (especially when it is uncontrollable) may also cause the entrepreneurial failure.

Abstract

This paper aims to analyze and discuss the implementation of innovative strategies in a public higher education institution in Indonesia. Analysis is undertaken by using Total Evaluation and Decision Square (TEDS) Method, which employs [a] Total Financial Management (TFM), [b] Total Content Management (TCM), [c] Total Process and Project Management (TPPM), and [d] Total Stakeholder Management (TSM) as the focus of analysis. The study is a qualitative study with the descriptive approach. Data and information were collected by using in-depth interview to the dean of the faculty and leaders of the department in the faculty as informants. Results of the interview were further analysed by using thematic analysis to get insights related to the topic of study. It can be inferred that the institution has already undertaken positive and beneficial innovation strategies. However, they are not effectively undertaken. This can be seen in the results of this study which show positive indicators in the parameters of Total Content Management (TCM), Total Process and Project Management (TPPM) and Total Stakeholder Management (TSM). The parameter of Total Financial Management (TFM), however, shows negative result in innovation strategy. The study reflects the actual condition of higher education institutions in Indonesia regarding institutional funding, and it further implies that the institution needs to be more innovative in finding suitable and reliable funding resources (apart from regular/yearly institutional budget as being provided by the Indonesian central government) to undertake its major tasks by law, which are [a] education, [b] research and development activities, as well as [c] the community development-empowerment activities. Keywords— TEDS method; total content management; total financial management; total process and project management; total stakeholder management

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to expose an informal entrepreneurial learning pattern that is undertaken by the Minangkabau tribe in Indonesia and relate it to cultural dimension and perceived value of a society. This informal entrepreneurial learning pattern is called as ‘Merantau’ - which can simply be meant as ‘to emigrate’, in which the young males (mostly during the ages of 15-20, or even younger) leave their homeland; move to other places nationwide or abroad, and running entrepreneurial activities for their daily life. The existence of merantau as an informal cultural based entrepreneurial learning for the young Minangkabau tribe combined with their cultural dimension and perceived values have contributed to the creation of and bring positive impacts to entrepreneurial culture of the Minangkabau tribe. The Minangkabau tribe, as one of tribes in Indonesia, experiences very supportive social environment in which entrepreneurial culture is recognised as part of the way of life. Therefore, Minangkabau tribe is known as one of the most entrepreneurial tribes in Indonesia. This paper considers perceived value and cultural dimension that may bring consequence to entrepreneurial culture of a society, with particular analysis to Minangkabau tribe in Indonesia. Analysis is undertaken by considering the elements and index of cultural dimension and perceived values of a society that can create and intiate entreprenuerial habits and relate them to entrepreneurship.Result of the analysis shows an evidence that culture of a society also plays an important role to create and maintain entrepreneurial habits and experience of a society. Together with cultural dimension of a society, perceived values that a society has, also contributes to the creation of entrepreneurial culture of that society. This is shown in the context of the Minangkabau tribe who is well known as an entrepreneurial tribe in Indonesia. However, this study analyses one single cultural background from a specific tribe in Indonesia and since it was undertaken to a single cultural background, it will be worth to extend this study and investigation into several cultural and value backgrounds from various ethnic groups/tribes in Indonesia or any other countries. Comparatively, this will add knowledge and dimension regarding entrepreneurship and its relationship to cultural dimension and perceived values of a society/community/ethnic group.

As the context of the study, a specific SME in West Sumatra was taken as the case study. The study is an empirical-exploratory research where the qualitative method in terms of descriptive analysis was used as the main research approach. It also uses content analysis from the result of an in-depth interview as its main data analysis. A case study approach is used to collect data and information from the informants of the study. It can be inferred from the study that knowledge sharing has allowed an equal dissemination of information between people in the organisation of SME. Employees and owners spread information, knowledge as well as experience equally one to each other and this has led to the creation of a conducive environment in which learning processes can be smoothly undertaken. Such learning processes directly ease the innovation processes that is schemed and undertaken by the SME.Bahasa Indonesia Abstrak: Artikel ini membahas proses dan implementasi knowledge sharing sebagai sebuah dasar bagi pembelajaran dalam proses inovasi yang dterjadi pada usaha kecil dan menengah/UKM dengan konteks pada UKM di Provinsi Sumatera Barat, Indonesia. Abstract

This paper examines the presence of emotive factor that mediates the variables of voluntaristic, deterministic and opportunistic behaviour that impact entrepreneurial failure. The study is a quantitative study and uses causal analysis as its research approach. It relates the constructs of voluntaristic factor, deterministic factor, and opportunistic behaviour with the mediation of emotive factor to entrepreneurial failure. Sample of the study is 1541 nascent entrepreneurs in West Sumatra Province, Indonesia, who have experienced business failures. Analysis was undertaken by using causal step analysis in which the statistical protocol and rule were operated. The study found and argue that emotive factor of entrepreneurs is identified as individual psychological construct that partially mediates voluntaristic, deterministic and opportunistic behaviour in causing entrepreneurial failure experienced by nascent entrepreneurs. Originality and value of the study lies in the framework used – which considers the construct of opportunistic behaviour of entrepreneurs as an independent variable that can cause entrepreneurial failure. Other is related to the consideration that emotive factor that mediates the voluntaristic, deterministic and opportunistic behaviour in causing entrepreneurial failure.

Abstract

This paper aims to examine and to discuss how entrepreneurial culture is formed from perceived values, cultural dimension, kinship system and informal cultural based entrepreneurial learning of a society. As the context of the research, it uses the Minangkabau tribe, which enjoys supportive social supports and where the culture of entrepreneurship is naturally accepted by the most of the tribe members as a part of their way of life. This paper considers and argues that perceived value, cultural dimension, kinship system and ‘merantau’ – an informal cultural based entrepreneurial learning of the tribe have brought direct and/or indirect positive impact to the creation of an entrepreneurial culture within the tribe. As the basis, a qualitative approach and analysis in terms of descriptive-reflexive observatory method is used to analyse the topic, which is further narratively and descriptively presented. Results of paper have shown the possible model of how perceived value, cultural dimension, kinship system and informal cultural based entrepreneurial learning can perform an entrepreneurial culture of a society, in which it is considered as the significant contribution in the research related to the culture and entrepreneurship.

Abstract

This paper examines factors that influence the depth-usage of social media as a business platform among student entrepreneurs by focusing analysis on the mediating effect of social media adoption. The study uses The Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) Model which identifies factors that can influence individuals’ behavioral patterns to accept and to use technology as the main theoretical/conceptual foundation. The study is a quantitative study which operates relational analysis between variables. A survey through the questionnaire with 142 student entrepreneurs in three state owned universities in Padang, Indonesia was undertaken to collect primary data and information. The result was further analyzed by using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) Partial Least Square (PLS) and causal step analysis in order to investigate the relationship between each variable and the mediating effect of social media adoption on factors that influence the depth-usage of social media as the business platform used by students entrepreneurs. The study found that performance expectation, perceived trust and social influence as the major factors that influence the adoption of social media usage as the business platform by student entrepreneurs. Meanwhile, perceived risks does not bring positive and significant influence. However, the mediating effect of the adoption of social media usage is only found in the performance expectancy when it influences the depth-usage of social media as the business platform by the student entrepreneurs.
