Abstract

The objectives of the study are to find out the types, the difference, and the reasons of conversational maxims occurring in the talk show. This research was conducted by qualitative content analysis method. The data were three topics of Mata Najwa namely politics, law, and education with different guests culture; Javanese, Makassar, Bataknese, and Chinese. The findings showed that all kinds of conversational maxims, i.e. quality, quantity, manner, and relevance, occurred in all topics and guests. Conversational maxims occurring in topic of politics is dominantly violated maxim of relevance, in topic of law is dominantly obeyed maxim of relevance, in topic of education is dominantly violated maxim quantity. Conversational maxims occurring with the Javanese guests is dominantly violated maxim of relevance, with the Makassar, Bataknese, and Chinese guests are all dominantly violated maxim of quantity. There are no relationship between culture and language tradition of the guests and their conversational maxims because the guests of Makassar, Bataknese, and Chinese have the same violation of maxim of quantity and all different guests have the same abstain obedience of maxim of manner. Factors affecting conversational maxims found are (1) The language attitude of the guests as participants in answering, (2) tendency to hide something or not to reveal truly, (3) making a joke or humorous answer, (4) using the metaphorical words in comparing or using language features, and (5) the issues of the topic itself.

Abstract

SMA di Darul Mursyid, Desa Sidapdap Simanosor Kecamatan Saipar Dolok Hole Kabupaten Tapanuli Selatan, Sumatere Utara. PKM ini diadakan di kelompok Saintek dan Soshum untuk persiapan memasuki Perguruan Tinggi Negeri (PTN). Pengajaran diberikan sebagai salah satu bentuk pengabdian pada kelompok masyarakat yang membutuhkan pengajaran literasi bahasa Inggris. PKM ini adalah bentuk pengajaran literasi bahasa Inggris secara rutin pada periode I (September s/d Oktober 2022). Pengajaran rutin diperlukan karena untuk peningkatan literasi bahasa Inggris dilakukan dengan intensitas yang banyak dan pengulangan. Metode pengajaran dalam PKM ini adalah ceramah, pengajaran, dan latihan soal (try out). Materi bahasa Inggris yang diberikan dalam PKM ini dengan mengajarkan kepada para siswa struktur (grammar) bahasa Inggris yang mendukung pemahaman literasi mereka. Materi struktur tersebut meliputi: Tenses (Present, Past, Future), Passive Voice, Modals, Clauses (Adverb, Noun, Adjective), Derivation, Concordance. Untuk penguatan literasi bahasa Inggris, pengajatran wacana (teks) adalah pemahaman tentang: Teknik membaca (scanning and skimming), Topik dan judul (topic and title), Ide utama (main idea), Rujukan kata (reference), Benar/salah (true/false), Tujuan teks (text purpose). Jika melihat hasil capaian siswa dalam kegiatan ini, maka terlihat hasil yang sudah memuaskan dan telah melewati ambang batas (passing grade 600). Dengan adanya kegiatan PKM ini, maka masalah tersebut telah teratasi untuk mencapai nilai ambang batas UTBK. Guru dan sekolah juga diharapkan terus memberikan penguatan materi kepada siswa. Dan orangtua juga diharapkan memberi motivasi/dorongan kepada para siswa dalam belajar untuk persiapan UTBK tahun 2023.

Abstract

Introduction to Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers (ILFS) through materials, strategies and techniques in teaching is a Community Service Activities (CSA) which was aimed to provide training and introduction to ILFS in West Aceh District, Aceh Province. This activity was carried out on 23 to 25 May, 2022 with the theme “Technical Guidance and Introduction the Basics of ILFS Teaching for Lecturers, Teacher Candidates, and ILFS Activists”. For the theme “Materials, Strategies and Techniques in Teaching ILFS” delivered by Jamaluddin Nasution was held on 24 May 2022 from 08.00 A.M. – 5.00 P.M. The ILFS teaching materials provided were: 1) opening class; 2) compiling syllabus and lesson plans; 3) culture and tourism in teaching ILFS; 4) choosing the appropriate material; and 5) game materials in teaching. This Community Service Activity was also carried out by donating a book from the author entitled “Culture Shock in Uzbekistan” to the Language Center of Teuku Umar University West Aceh Regency. In this case, ILFS teaching can be used as a medium and a means of linguistic diplomacy to introduce Indonesia to foreign countries. Therefore, ILFS needs introducing to the community, especially lecturers, teachers and ILFS activists. This activity aimed to encourage them to actively participate in teaching ILFS both at domestic and abroad. Thus, ILFS can be used as a medium and a means of diplomacy that helps the Indonesian government to introduce Indonesian language and culture to the international world.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengajaran keterampilan menulis BIPA bagi tingkat pemula. Jenis penelitian ini adalah deskripsi dengan menggunakan kualitatif. Tehnik pengumpulan data yang dilakukan dengan melakukan obsevasi serta study literatur (Metode Studi literatur adalah serangkaian kegiatan yang berkenaan dengan metode pengumpulan data pustaka, membaca dan mencatat, serta mengelolah. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, maka diperoleh data bahwa pengaruh dalam pengajaran Menulis bagi Penutur BIPA sangat berdampak dengan keberhasilan pembelajaran Bahasa Indonesia. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian mengenai pengaruh pengajaran menulis bagi BIPA tingkat Pemula adalah Menggunakan media digitalisasi pembelajaran melalui metode langsung (luring) dan google classroom Penutur asing dapat menciptakan suatu tulisan dengan media pulpen dan kertas yang berisi tentang pengalaman secarap pribadi. Ada empat ketrampilan berbahasaMembaca, Menulis, Menyimak dan Berbicara. Seorang pemelajar BIPA harus mampu menguasai 4 Keterampilan dalam berbahasa, dengan tujuan agar memudahkan kemahiran dan pemahaman terhadap bahasa itu sendiri, misalnya bahasa Indonesia. Bahasa Indonesia merupakan bahasa yang menarik, bahasa yang mudah diucapkan dan bahasa yang mudah dipahami. Melalui keterampilan menulis penutur BIPA akan memudahkan dalam kemahiran dalam berkomunikasi menggunakan Bahasa Indonesia.

Abstract

The problem of this research is students’ difficulties to comprehend the text because they had a weak vocabulary, lack interest in reading, and looked bored reading the text. By applying mind mapping techniques to narrative material, this study seeks to increase students' reading comprehension. In order to help students learn new vocabulary, access information from texts, and increase their memory for reading comprehension, this research employed class action research (CAR) with two cycles. The subjects of this research were students of the second grade at SMA S Panca Jaya Galang in the 2022/2023 academic year, totaling 25 students. This research uses data collection techniques in the observation sheet, tests, and documentation. This data was obtained from the pre-test and post-test results by applying the mind mapping. It has been found that teaching students how to use mind maps helps improve their reading comprehension. It can be seen from the data that in cycle I, 14 of 25 students only achieved a score of 75 or higher, the average student score was 66,4, with a total student score of 1660, and the proportion of pupils that succeed the KKM was approximately 56%. In cycle II, on the other hand, there were 21 of 25 students who achieved a score of 75 or higher, the average student score was 83,4, with a total student score of 2085, as well as the pass rate for students. The conclusion of this research is mind mapping techniques can improve students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study is about the difficulties in translating idiomatic expressions. The purpose of this research is to find out the students’ difficulties in translating idiomatic expressions from English into the Indonesian language, and the causes of the difficulties. The type of research method used in this study is the descriptive qualitative research method. Data from this study was collected and obtained through tests and questionnaires. The subject of this study was 10 students from the 5th semester in majoring English Education at UNPRI Medan. Tests were distributed to the students to find out the student’s ability to translate idiomatic expressions, and what their difficulties, the results of translation were totally inadequate on 17%, inadequate on 19%, adequate on 11%, almost completely successful on 11%, and successful on 42%. After that, the researchers found the students’ difficulties in translating idiomatic expressions were lexical difficulty at 15%, stylistic difficulty at 28%, cultural difficulty at 28%, and 29% for grammatical difficulty. Based on the questionnaires the researchers found several factors influenced students' difficulties in translating idioms, firstly their lack of knowledge of idiomatic expressions, secondly, lack of vocabulary mastery, and thirdly, the students also rarely practiced expression idioms in speaking and writing. As a result, it is suggested that students study books, articles, papers, song lyrics, and movie subtitles in English to broaden their knowledge of idioms. They should also practice using idioms in writing and everyday conversation. Keywords: difficulties, causes, translation, idiom

Abstract

There are some English learners feel hard in understanding a sentence when they are tested in listening comprehension. It can be seen when they are joining a test about English conversation although they have learned English Vocabulary and English Grammar. To increase the English learners’ listening comprehension ability, it is so necessary to introduce basic theories of Pragmatics to the English learners. Conversational Implicature theories by Grice is one of the most important aspects from the Pragmatics theories. Conversational Implicature by Grice focused on the phenomenon theory of conveying more than what have been explained in the theory. That is why, English learners as English listeners in this situation must be able to master the conversational implicature theory that already explained by Grice. It was about how to infer the implicature in guiding English learners’ learning and it is able to be learned in such theories in listening comprehension. This research attempted to examine the correlation between them and it stated the role played in the conversational implicature in listening comprehension.

Abstract

Penerapan kaidah tata bahasa dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing (BIPA) memiliki peran penting dalam mempelajari dan menggunakan bahasa Indonesia dengan benar. Penelitian ini membahas mengenai penerapan kaidah tata bahasa dalam bahan ajar BIPA tingkat pemula. Dalam penelitian ini, metode yang digunakan adalah studi literatur dengan mengumpulkan informasi dari sumber-sumber yang relevan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pemahaman yang kuat tentang kaidah tata bahasa menjadi dasar yang penting dalam menguasai bahasa Indonesia sebagai bahasa kedua. Penerapan kaidah tata bahasa melalui latihan dan aktivitas komunikatif dapat memperkuat pemahaman dan kemampuan berkomunikasi para pembelajar BIPA. Melalui pemahaman yang baik terhadap kaidah tata bahasa, Pemelajar BIPA dapat menyampaikan pesan dengan jelas dan tepat serta membangun kemampuan berbicara, membaca, menulis, dan memahami bahasa Indonesia secara keseluruhan. Diharapkan bahwa pemelajar BIPA akan memperoleh pemahaman yang lebih baik tentang pentingnya penerapan kaidah tata bahasa dalam pembelajaran bahasa Indonesia tingkat pemula, yang akan membantu mereka berkomunikasi dengan lebih percaya diri dan efektif dalam bahasa Indonesia serta melanjutkan pembelajaran bahasa Indonesia ke tingkat yang lebih tinggi.

Abstract

The research aims to find out how the students’ ability in translating noun phrase, at the third grade of Madrasah Aliyah Swasta (MAS) Amaliyah Sunggal, Medan. This research used qualitative research design; the subject of the research were 30 students of the second grade of Madrasah Aliyah Swasta (MAS) Amaliyah Sunggal, Medan. The instruments used in this research were test and interview. The researchers gave essay test for the students. The findings of the research found that 40% students were able to identify the translating noun phrase and 60% students were unable to do so. The students’ difficulties in translating noun phrase are found since the students’ lack of vocabulary understand and lack of translating in a sentence, but they can translate a word. It is suggested that the teacher should pay more attention to the students’ creating of better translation especially in the form of translating noun phrase.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengembangkan bahan bacaan menggunakan media digital. Kelebihan dari penelitian ini adalah pemanfaatan media digital sebagai sarana pembelajaran dapat dijadikan sebagai acuan dalam memberikan alternatif bahan bacaan yang sesuai dengan kebutuhan peserta didik. Kegiatan ini melibatkan analisis dan pengorganisasian berbagai keterampilan yang kompleks seperti pembelajaran, berpikir, penalaran, asimilasi, dan pemecahan masalah. Pertama, media sebagai penunjang pembelajaran, dan yang kedua adalah media sebagai sumber belajar. Membaca teks bahasa Indonesia untuk penutur asing menghadirkan tantangan tersendiri dalam mempelajarinya. Membaca memiliki beberapa keterampilan yang harus dikuasai. Kebiasaan berlatih membaca sangat membantu Anda meningkatkan kemampuan membaca. Menggunakan media digital dapat meningkatkan kemampuan membaca kata. Anda juga harus dapat menafsirkan dan memahami kata-kata dalam teks.
