Abstract

In Indonesia, exposure to the English language is primarily mediated through the use of English textbooks. What cultural knowledge and whose culture are represented in these textbooks become a critical issue because culture interweaves both language and thought. With this in mind, this study aims to examine how Indonesian cultural diversity and whose cultures are represented in middle school English textbooks. We argue that diversity and multicultural perspectives represented in these textbooks are the core of English language learning and teaching. We also contend that language textbooks play a pivotal role in the acquisition of both linguistic and cultural knowledge of English. Drawing on Kress and Van Leeuwen’s (2006) semiotic approach to analyzing textual and non-textual representations of cultures, we found that the 2013 English textbooks for Grades 7 and 8 permeate Indonesian cultural values and practices that do not provide a balanced and equal depiction of Indonesian cultural diversity. The findings suggest the importance of inclusive representation of the richness of Indonesian local culture in a more salient manner, especially those of minority groups. Pedagogically, teachers are expected to design language materials with cultural sensitivity and appropriation for the inclusiveness of other cultural values that might not be covered in the textbooks.

Abstract

This study aimed at finding out the psychological effects that have been drawn by the implementation of online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic on university students. The approach implemented in carrying out this study was a descriptive qualitative approach. There were 140 students involved as respondents. The instrument used was a questionnaire set that was generated from Wiles (2020). Before proceeding with data collection process, the validity of the instrument was checked, and the items were valid. Then, the data were analyzed using Interactive Analysis as suggested by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). The result shows that from the seven mental effects raised from increased screen time, the students admit that they most likely feel fatigued (100%), they experience physical pain such as headache, shoulder sore, eyesore, and others (100%), they have bad time management (98.6%), they feel isolation being drawn from their classmates (68.6%), and they experienced uncertainty about the lecturer’s explanation during the online classes. Hence, it is suggested that there is a special unit to care about the students’ mental health during online learning in this pandemic.

Abstract

This study investigated the TOEFL benchmark policy as an exit requirement for Universitas Teuku Umar students. The research method used was survey design hereby the data from the questionnaire and students' TOEFL score were collected. Under the policy, the students have to pass the standard passing score of TOEFL to graduate. 100 non-English major students from Universitas Teuku Umar participated in this study. The results of the study revealed that the participants gave more positive responses than negative ones. The extend of approval for this policy seemed more related to their abilities, awareness of the importance of learning English, and motivation to learn English. The result from TOEFL scores taken from 2018-2019 found that as many as 58% of students failed to obtain minimum criteria (˃ 400) while only 42% of them reached 400 or above. It indicates that Universitas Teuku Umar students are not ready yet to face this policy.  On the other hand, based on the questionnaire result, most students agreed with the implementation of TOEFL as an exit requirement, however, a minimum passing score should be evaluated and a set of students' needs under the policy should be facilitated.

Abstract

A great demand of mastering English in globalization era has made English education in Indonesia valuable and popular. Problems in classroom, quality of teachers, teaching strategies and media are a plethora of topics that have been concerns to be developed. On another front, there is an effort to shape students’ character building which enables them to master social competence with the expected behavior and moral capacity. Students can be trained some certain good characters within the implementation of language teaching. By taking these two variables into account, success of learning can be achieved not only in language mastery, but also in students’ character.

Abstract

The research sought to understand the value of patriotism in the Hikayat Prang Sabi by using a qualitative approach. Hikayat was referred to narratives (saga) of war rooted in Acehnese cultural tradition, and Prang Sabi in Acehnese language meant ‘Holy War’. As a literary work, Hikayat Prang Sabi embodied the concept of jihad, which was usually sung during the time of war in the Acehnese history: Portuguese in 1511, Dutch in 1873, Japan in 1942, and the Republic of Indonesia in 1976. The source of the data was verses or stanzas of Hikayat Prang Sabi that contained patriotic values. These verses were then treated as the unit of analysis. A hermeneutic approach was employed to analyze the data. The findings show that Hikayat Prang Sabi contains two types of patriotic values: national and religious. National value refers to the sense of nationalism, ethnicity, and humanity. Religious value, on the other hand, displays the value of spirituality, prophecy, and peace. These values indicate the foundation of thinking and doing of the Acehnese people manifested in a literary work, which then can be transferred into the notion of character education.

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to make a theoretically informed judgement about how a child processes a text in a reading activity. A second-grade English language learner participated as the subject of this study and was observed for five times of one-on-one guided reading condition (30 minutes each). The observation focused on what happened when the child read, how and what changes occurred over time. We also focused on the individual differences and the role of knowledgeable others in helping the child processed the texts. We took notes on observable behaviors in reading processing, including monitoring activities, self-correction behaviors, and problem-solving strategies. The findings suggest some critical arguments, including (1) reading is a problem-solving activity involving multiple knowledge sources, (2) self-correction in reading is as a sign of progress, and (3) reading progress from novice to expert occurs in different path system. DOI: 10.26905/enjourme.v4i2.4036

Abstract

In this paper, we draw upon three observation data to explore the concept of pretend play and peer cultures among kindergarten children situated in a childcare center of the Midwestern area of the U.S. Framed in this study, Paley’s (1992) notion of dynamic play that exists within children that children behavior is changing over time and across ages. Pretend-play and peer culture are worth investigating to better understand children’s social development that might have implication for their success in education. Two observation data were obtained from a university-based Child Care Center, and one from an Indonesian family who have lived in the U.S. for three years. 12 children aged three to four years old and two kindergarten teachers were involved during the observation. The observations lasted for about 40 minutes. The findings suggest that the children were involved in different kinds of play: (1) spontaneous fantasy, and (2) socio-dramatic play. Spontaneous fantasy is when children are involved in a less structured play or no strict rule that governs the activity. Socio-dramatic play is kinds of play when children take agency that exist in the society, such as mothers, fathers, workers, and other adulthood. Both types of pretend play embodied shared knowledge about how to play appropriately based on the theme and plot emerged.

Abstract

Interpersonal communication is communication that occurs between two or more people, which is usually not formally regulated. In interpersonal communication, each participant uses all elements of the communication process. Village cadres have a very important role in monitoring, controlling and paying attention to the health condition of the community in Keude Tanjong Village, XVI District, West Aceh Regency. The services provided by village cadres with the community at the posyandu are positive and can be well received by visitors at the posyandu, so that the satisfaction achieved gets positive results. This research is quantitative. Respondents who became the target of the study were mothers or people who visited the posyandu in Keude Tanjong village. Data collection using the Likert scale method, in-depth interviews, and using SPSS (Statistical Product and Service Solutions) application access. Analysis of the services provided by village cadres to the community got a good response, but there were also some respondents who did not accept the services provided, so that when they got respondents it was not pleasant, it was marked by negative perceptions of the various characteristics of these things and the triggers of the problem. The results showed that the relationship between interpersonal communication of village cadres and satisfaction with health services at the posyandu between posyandu cadres and the community in Keude Tanjong Village was strongly positive, namely, the relationship between interpersonal communication of village cadres and satisfaction of health services in the same direction where the greater the interpersonal communication relationship of village cadres, it would be the greater the satisfaction of health services in the village of Keude Tanjong.

Abstract

English language learners (ELLs) may not yet be proficient enough to participate in a mainstream classroom in the U.S. schools, and they often feel anxious, frustrated, and embarrassed. Identifying best instructional practices to foster literacy learning of ELLs has been an urgent priority in research given the fact that the ELLs population continues to increase. Teachers in the U.S classrooms need to be equipped with sufficient knowledge and skills to meet the needs of these students. In this paper, current understanding of teaching literacy to ELLs in elementary classroom is presented, which revolve around discussion of oral language, complex text, and teacher engagement which is both culturally and linguistically relevant.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate whether there was significant difference on the students’ reading comprehension of narrative text between those who were taught through Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) method and those who were not. Forty-nine students were selected as the sample and quasi-experimental, non-randomized pre-test and post-test design were employed. The analysis of covariance showed that the students who were taught by using CIRC method statistically outperformed those who were not on their reading comprehension of narrative text, (F (1, 48) = 13.56, p < .05). This result implies that CIRC is an effective method to teach reading comprehension, particularly on narrative text. Since this study only focused on narrative text, future researchers might be interested to seek the effect of CIRC on other text genres. Similar study though may be conducted with a randomized design of larger population.
