Abstract

Selfitis is one of the phenomena that is currently popular among adolescents. Adolescents are attracted to show self-presentation, one of which is through selfies. This study aimed to identify the correlation between the obsessive desire to take selfies and high school adolescents' self-esteem. This research was a quantitative study with a cross-sectional design. The study population was high school adolescents aged 15-16 years with 797 participants recruited using a total sampling method. The instrument in this study used the Rosenberg self-esteem questionnaire to measure self-esteem and the Selfitis Behavior Scale (SBS) questionnaire to measure selfitis in adolescents. The results showed that most of the adolescents had borderline selfitis (46.3%) and high self-esteem (88.1%). Factors that were significantly related to taking selfies amongst adolescents were gender (p-value: 0.000) and socioeconomic status (p-value: 0.000). Meanwhile, gender (p-value: 0.013), socio-economic status (p-value: 0.032), family harmony (p-value: 0.000), and selfitis (p-value: 0.000) were significantly related to self-esteem in adolescents. The multivariate analysis results showed that harmony in the family was the most influential factor in adolescents' self-esteem. Adolescents with higher levels of selfitis and harmony in the family tended to have better self-esteem.

This study aimed to examine the interlink of a harmonious family with stress, anxiety, and depression in adolescents. Methods: This study employed descriptive correlational design with cross-sectional approach and examined 851 high school adolescents aged between 16-18 years who were recruited using a total sampling method from five high school in Malang City. Stress, anxiety and depression in adolescents was assessed employing the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS - 21), while, to assess family harmony, a questionnaire   developed by the researcher was used. Data were analyzed through descriptive statistics and bivariate tests using Spearman Rank Correlation. Results: It was revealed that 428 adolescents (50.3%) were male, 321 adolescents (37.7%) came from parents who worked privately, and 482 adolescents (56.6%) had their parents' social status above the minimum wage standard. Eight hundred and two adolescents (94.2%) had harmonious families, while the remaining 49 adolescents (5.8%) had non-harmonious families. Our study concluded that family harmony had a significant relationship with adolescent stress levels (p-value 0.013). On the other hand, the analysis showed that family harmony was not related to adolescents' anxiety (p-value 0.071) and depression level (p-value 0.13). A harmonious family makes children mentally healthy, able to adapt to the environment while a family that is not harmonious can trigger stress because conditions are not as expected, coupled with the burden of schoolwork, stressors from teachers and peers. Conclusion:The results of the research showed that harmony in the family had a significant effect on stress in adolescents. Therefore, it is necessary to provide education and counseling to the family to prevent fights in the family so that it can reduce the emergence of stress in adolescents.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional multi-centre design with 357 participants aged 15-16 from fve high schools in Indonesia. We used the convenience sampling method to select participants. Communication in the family questionnaire, Rosenberg Self Esteem Instrument, Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21), and the Scale for Suicide Ideation (SSI) questionnaires were used to measure communication within the family, selfesteem, stress, anxiety, depression, and suicide ideation, respectively. Data were analyzed using Chi-square and binary logistics regression. Results: Most of the adolescents were male (52.1%), had harmonious families (96.6%), had economic status above the minimum wage (65.5%), had high self-esteem (88.5%), and had high social support (67.8%). However, in terms of mental health problems, as many as 47.3%, 74.2%, 72%, and 30.5% of adolescents experienced stress, anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation, respectively. The multivariate analysis concluded that gender (AOR: 0.499; 95% CI: 0.294-0.847) and socioeconomic status (AOR: 0.2.162; 95% CI: 1.296–3.608) were signifcantly correlated with family communication. Conclusion: Males adolescents are more likely to have ineffective family communication than female adolescents. Also, adolescents with a family socioeconomic status below the minimum wage have a greater risk of ineffective family communication. Therefore, it is essential to improve family communication through assertive communication training in adolescents and families in the educational and community setting.
