Abstract

AbstractPancasila is the ideology of the nation and becomes the foundation of Indonesian characters. However, based on the reality, there were many Indonesian’s characters that are far below expectation of the standard in Butir-butir Pancasila (Items of Pancasila), as a further explanation of the values in Pancasila. Therefore, it is needed to introduce of Pancasila and its 45 items in our formal education system. Textbook still become the primary media formal education schools. By assessing several books which were published by distinguished publishers and used in schools, it was found that they included only a very few of those items. This study was held to know if character points of Pancasila which Indonesian learners need to know have been included in the textbooks titled When English Rings the Bell: Buku Siswa and When English Rings the Bell: Buku Guru which were officially published by the Educational and Cultural Ministry of Indonesia and used the primary textbook in models schools as the implementation of Kurikulum 2013. The findings showed that as the official textbook has adequate number of Pancasila items in it. However, the teachers’ role was still the most important factor to make those items were known and can be applied. How to Cite : Husna, N., Kamar, T. L.. Abstract

A pop song is one of the popular genres widespread in society. The label 'popular' is used as it covers a diverse range of masses, started from pre-dominantly youth to adult, that target them as the market. To the extent of the popular meaning, a song is supported with alluring music video clips, entertaining musical instruments, and lyrics that make an addiction by turning the repeat mode on a music player. Regardless, no all of the songs carried by singers incorporate lyric meanings of what they indeed seem. They thus frequently embed figurative features of the language to fit the context of a song. The figurative language feature is a variety of language that authors operate to convey out of the comprehension of literal meaning. It then involves no surface context instead of a deep one. Therefore, this descriptive qualitative analysis study was conducted to investigate how figurative language features carry and influence the meaning behind BLACKPINK-Selena Gomez's song Ice Cream. The findings showed that metaphor (48%) was the most frequent figure spotted in the musical discourse, followed respectively by simile (28%), hyperbole (12%), and repetition (12%). It indicated the song was intended to convey the lyrics contained no real-context meanings that can cause misleading or even be puzzlement if the listeners cannot comprehend the song as a whole. Therefore, further research may comprehensively consider this issue with different perspectives to broaden the language field.

Abstract

The present study aims to analyze multiple-choice questions obtained from a trial testing conducted in a state junior high school in Indonesia. The study seeks to reveal the level of difficulty, discriminating power and distractor efficiency of the selected test items by employing item analysis. The result of the study discovers that levels of difficulty on the question items are varied. Some question tended to be easy and moderately difficult while the others are difficult to answer. It also uncovers that, in regard to discriminating power, some questions are well constructed while the others are ambiguously worded that can potentially cause the questions to fail to evaluate the students’ ability. The analysis on distractor efficiency presents information how the chosen multiple-choice questions were frequently constructed with less effective distractors that caused more high achieving students to choose wrong answers.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are: (1) to find out what types of speaking skills in the communicative language testing approach do the teachers use on the secondary level; (2) and to find out which of the five types of speaking skills on the communication language test were most used by teachers during the pandemic. This study used the descriptive qualitative method. Respondents of this study were English teachers at the secondary level in Jakarta, which consisted of 20 teachers. The results of this study indicate that: first, the English teacher only uses performance to assess students' speaking ability in this pandemic era. Second, Assessing Students' Speaking Ability Using Communicative Language Testing Approach on a Secondary Level in the Pandemic Era is only carried out during the initial assessment stage and formative test. The implementation of the assessment of students' speaking abilities using a Communicative Language Testing Approach was applied when the teacher asked students to build a response or performance that is not just providing information. The teacher asks students to solve specific case problems (problem-solving). The teacher asks students to select the correct response that requires information and concepts so that they are more active in class because they must be able to bring information to solve problems based on the learning material that has been previously delivered. Third, teachers' perceptions are assessment using Communicative Language Testing is very good for improving students' speaking ability because students clearly show their work. Students can convey their ideas without fear. Students not only understand the theory but practice it in real life. On the other hand, the use of authentic assessment takes a long time.

Abstract

This study aims to (1) determine the kind of grammatical cohesion devices that were used in a news item text of a textbook (2) to examine how reference, substitution, ellipses, and conjunction were used to describe the Cohesion that was used in the news item text of an English textbook for senior high school students in the 12th grade "Symphony 3". This study is qualitative descriptive research. The analysis of data found that the grammatical cohesion devices in the news item text of the textbook are reference, conjunction, and ellipsis. References become the most common devices, followed by conjunction and ellipsis. Surprisingly, there is no substitution found in this text. Hence, substitution and ellipsis are the two most minor common forms of cohesive devices. It demonstrates that the two types of coherent devices have no use in written discourse. The news item text of the textbook is written cohesively "good" as the percentage is 61 % for the reference. In comparison, 38% for the conjunction is categorized as "fair." This textbook is considered an objective criterion of cohesiveness. It may be fascinating to analyze these in separate studies in spoken discourse, particularly spontaneous speech.
