Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine a native speaker's interaction with young learners in an English class to determine (1) what types of sentences she used in instructing young learners and (2) what tenses she used in giving instruction and asking questions while teaching young learners in the classroom. The researcher used the qualitative descriptive technique in order to perform the investigation. The information was gathered via class observation, including recording three meetings' worth of teaching and learning activities. After that, the tape was transcribed to analyze the data. The participants were a native English speaker and young learners from grade two primary students. The study's results reveal that the native speaker used various phrase types in her instruction, including simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences. However, the most type of sentence she used is a simple sentence followed by a compound-complex and complex sentence. A minor type of sentence she used is a compound sentence. She also used three distinct tenses during her teaching. They exist in the present, the past, and the future. The most type of tenses she used was present and future tense. She almost rarely used past tense.

Abstract

This study seeks to figure out how certain new and given information as information structure of syntactic forms are revealed in Barack Obama’s remarks in Jakarta. The study is focused on the beginning parts of Obama’s remarks, as in that he recalled his childhood memories of staying in Jakarta, Indonesia, for four years. In order to investigate the information structures, we collected the data from digital documents (scripts and videos) of the remark; then, we analyzed the syntactic forms of article “a” (indefinite) and “the” (definite) and also the rheme and theme of the script and the video of the remarks using close textual analysis. The results indicate that the uses of these articles construct certain messages whose tones are either distancing, getting close, or neutralizing the speaker against the audience. Furthermore, the information contained in Obama’s speech reflected the context-awareness of the speaker and also the audience. The speech could also open up further study on (political) critical discourse analysis, as it was delivered in the political contexts between Indonesia and the USA.

Abstract

Many people are still struggling to cope with gender equality in all aspects of life. There is hope for a balanced role for men and women to participate in any industry. The gender balance today seems to be that both men and women have equal possibilities to present, attend classes, work, and take part in other positive activities. Above and beyond, gender equality can be introduced at a young age by bringing up the roles of men and women in a balanced way of contributing to daily activities, as demonstrated in coursebooks. The excellent coursebook should illustrate the way men and women interact in society based on their roles, position, surroundings, culture, and community structures that are portrayed throughout the form of images and sentence descriptions in a balanced way. However, the current English coursebook with an Indonesian setting has not been able to fulfill gender equality. At this point, the researchers conducted a study to look into various aspects of gender awareness in the Cambridge Global English Coursebook 8 Grades. This study employs qualitative research using content analysis. The data of this study was derived from the content of Cambridge Global English Coursebook 8 Grades, which depicts gender relations. The content was categorized into visibility, jobs, games, household duties, and the data, consisting of pictures and texts from the coursebook. The data of this study was obtained through document analysis. This study showed gender awareness in Cambridge Global English Coursebook 8 Grades. Abstract

This study aims to find out the use of cohesive grammatical devices in twelfth-grade students’ explanation texts. In addition, this study also aims to explore the types of grammatical cohesion specifications in their essays. In this study, the researcher wanted to find out how good the quality of their student’s writing explanation texts was. To achieve this goal, the researcher used the conceptual framework of Halliday and Hasan (1976) regarding grammatical cohesion. This study applied to the twelfth grade of the Senior High School Level. The research uses descriptive and analytic studies by assigning students to write the texts. The result from the students’ explanation texts as the data in this research, there are 146 cohesive grammatical items found in students’ explanation texts. The reference occurs 68 times which has 46.5 of percentages. Conjunction occurs 53 times with 36.3% percent. Substitution occurs 23 with 15.7% percent. Ellipsis occurs two times with the lowest rate of 1.3%. The result shows that all four types of grammatical cohesion appear in students’ explanatory texts, which are the primary data in this study. However, there are subtypes of cohesive devices that don’t exist in students’ explanation texts from all of those devices. The most dominant was the reference and conjunction; on the other hand, ellipsis was the smallest presentation among grammatical cohesive, and only a few students used them. The result also indicated that the lack of grammatical cohesion devices used in terms of the generical structure of explanation text, knowledge, and ability in writing leads the college students to use inappropriate grammatical cohesion devices to be applied to this type of text. Thus, this study comes up with feedback to teachers that the discussion on the structural writing of texts and the use of coherence and cohesion should be more intensive.

Abstract

Conversation analysis is one of the practical strategies for discourse analysis in speaking that may be used to teach oral English in an English foreign language classroom. Through conversational analysis, this study intends to examine the theoretical foundations of Arabian social identity and the possibility of using a discourse way of speaking to educate a group of learners. The current study focuses on cultural disparities between Arabic-speaking and English-speaking populations, examining the impact of such cultural barriers on Arab-English foreign language learners' communication. A case study of English foreign language students from the International Arab Egyptian School (IAES) was conducted to achieve this purpose. Using contrastive rhetoric, several challenges in students' English speaking were explained. Qualitative data analysis of culturally bound distinctions in numerous linguistic features such as letters, vowels, writing style, word use, and syntax, as well as some rhetoric and structural styles such as coordinating, subordinating, and metaphoric styles, revealed the high potential for errors and issues faced by Egyptian EFL students when developing spoken English. Data was collected by recording some sessions and extracting some language from both teachers and students by analyzing the language used inside the classroom. The most significant finding of this research is the organizing training to differentiate the interaction medium in the language classroom. In other words, teachers should use an "interactive decision-making" method in which they must make rapid decisions on which media to use to meet emerging issues such as subject matter comprehension, classroom management, or building a good rapport in the classroom.
