Abstract

This study aims to compare the policy of the 2005-2013 National Examination (UN, hereafter) version with the latest one 2014-now. The implementation of later UN has received considerable critics. Now that the recent UN has upgraded the policy, we will see if the problems or critics found in the previous UN are solved in the latest one. By reviewing the UN's obstacles and controversy in later versions, we compare this with the current policy regulation. By employing library research, the present study identifies the controversy of later UN from various areas and years. The study revealed that the contemporary laws now solve the previously concerning reason to review UN policy. Further, the study also uncovered that the breakthrough of the new UN policy was on the content of the test. Another major findings derived from this study is that the application of the computer-based test reduced the possibility of the test takers to do cheating.

The impact of Covid-19 outbreak in Indonesia compels the government to set urgent policies during the Covid-19 period. Therefore, the Ministry of Education and Culture had announced that schools have to continue carrying out teaching and learning activities virtually, which causes new problems to emerge; one of them is regarding inappropriate teaching media used by teachers. This study investigates the implementation of communicative teaching media in teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) during the pandemic in Indonesian senior high schools. As qualitative research, this study uses a literature study approach and questionnaire instrument to obtain data. Forth, the results show that social media dominate the implementation of communicative teaching media in Indonesia. English teachers' communicative media, which are frequently used, are WhatsApp then followed by Google Classroom and Zoom due to the simplicity in the technology used and features that adequately create collaborative, practical, active teaching and learning activities during the pandemic.

Abstract

This study investigates whether there is a significant relationship between the speaking ability of students in bilingual classes and their daily conversation performance, as reported in the oral placement test. The researchers analysed the relationship between the placement test scores and the speaking performance of 146 first-year bilingual students attending an Islamic Junior High School. An oral interview was applied to determine their speaking ability on the placement test and was conducted again to test their speaking ability at the end of the semester. Pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, comprehension, and fluency were the scoring criteria for assessing the oral interview to indicate the learners’ English performance in speaking and their oral abilities. Each student is tested individually in more or less than ten minutes. A Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient was applied to determine the strength of the correlation between the oral placement test and those from the oral interview at the end of the semester. The data indicated that the results of the oral placement test when the students are still considered first-year students are still the same with their speaking at the end of the term; therefore, there is no significance and changes. These results turned out to be affected by the students’ learning style at the previous school, background knowledge, and the teacher’s teaching methods.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the visual components of a Pearson primary school English textbook. By applying visual semiotic theory to the visual aspects (Barthes, 1977), this research demonstrates that the EFL textbook has three kinds of multicultural values: respect for other people's traditions, appreciation for women's equal rights, and appreciation for other people's viewpoints. Three photos exemplified respect for other people's traditions, one exemplified gratitude for women's equal rights, and two exemplified appreciation for another person's viewpoint. Additionally, two visual components identified in this research are classified as source culture (SC), four visual elements are classified as universality culture (UC), and there are no visual elements that reflect target culture (TC). The current study discovered that the EFL Pearson textbook for Indonesian primary school continues to have an asymmetric depiction of multicultural values.
