Abstract

Asking activity is a form of class interaction that needs attention. With the asking activity, it can increase the questioner’s knowledge. This study aimed to identify the questions form that filed by teachers and students in the classroom following the framework of thinking mandated in the revised Bloom Taxonomy and to explore the problems faced by lecturers in implementing the HOTS-based learning process. This study used qualitative methods by applying observation sheets and interview to collect data. The data analysis of this research used analysis of domain, taxonomy, component, and theme. The results of this study indicate that lecturers and students have applied the principles of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) from core learning activities to final learning activities. The form of the question is in level C4 (Analyzing), C5 (Evaluating), and C6 (Creating), but in the form of Creating questions, students still need to increase the frequency in asking. The problem faced is the difficulty in stimulating students who can answer and ask questions at level C6 in HOTS. Therefore, lecturers also try to overcome these problems by implementing strategies in the learning process.

Abstract

The significance of learner autonomy in today’s English Language Teaching (ELT) context has been well recognized and confirmed by many research findings; however, in some cases in which independent learning is not well established, the implementation may not be easy. Thus, this research is intended to provide data on teachers’ readiness and challenges in promoting learner autonomy during online learning activities. This research employed quantitative and qualitative data collection. The quantitative data were gained by a survey that has been conducted to 38 English teachers in 38 junior high schools in Bengkulu. In addition, the qualitative data were collected from an interview that has also been carried out to six teachers. The quantitative data obtained were then analysed through descriptive statistics analysis in the form of percentages and frequency. Meanwhile, the qualitative data were analysed by using thematic analysis. The results showed that in general most teachers were ready to build learner autonomy in ICT-based English learning. Most teachers used various methods in online teaching, gave freedom for the students to access different online resources according to their interest, found it easy to carry out online learning, yet most of them did not prefer to implement online learning activities. In the implementation, some challenges were faced by teachers, including poor internet connection, students’ different characteristics, and lack support from school policymakers.

Furthermore, research data collection was done through the provision of tests, interviews, and observations. Several experts have validated the instruments used in this study. The data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS, while qualitative data in interviews and observation sheets were analyzed using several stages, including data reduction, data display, and concluding. The results of this study indicated a quality improvement of HOTS-based English questions that have been made by English teachers, which was evidenced by an increase in the results from pretest to posttest. The next finding is that three types of feedback helped teachers make HOTS-based English questions through multimodal feedback: peer feedback, oral conference, and written feedback. Another finding was that English teachers gave a positive perception towards designing HOTS-based English questions through multimodal feedback because these activities provided positive input on their ability to make HOTS-based English questions. In conclusion, the findings of this study benefit English teachers in designing HOTS-based questions, so that teachers can implement the result of the workshop in the teaching and learning process.

Abstract

AbstractTeaching grammar has been regarded as prominence in teaching a language where there are some different views of how to teach it. Recently, with the introduction of Communicative Language Teaching, teaching grammar is emphasized on experiential learning and communicative goals. For these reasons the writer tried to implement inductive approach in Bahasa Inggris class, where all the students are from Non English Department. In inductive approach, the learners study examples and from these examples derives an understanding of the rule. the writer also presented the grammar integrated with four language skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing), where the writer paid more attention to enabling students to work with the target language during the lesson and communicate in it by the end of it.. In totally 14 meetings, the teacher applied inductive approach in presenting the materials and gave all exercises integratedly to four language skills (speaking, writing, reading and listening). The data were collected by means of T-Test. From the results of the T-test, it can be seen that the T value is 5,193, with the significance value 0,001. T value is more than T table ,2,042 . It can be interpreted that there is a significant difference between the students’ achievement in grammar before the treatment and after the treatment by using inductive approach and applying the activities that integrates grammar into four language skills. It was also found that the students were enthusiastic along the teaching and learning processes by implementing inductive approach. Keywords: inductive, communicative language teaching
