Abstract

Sarcasm has become an uncommon way to treat other’s faces in communication. However, the study of sarcasm has not yet been investigated thoroughly in the case of such daily illocutionary acts of the conversations. One of the sarcasm phenomena is mostly seen in the comedy situation of The Big Bang Theory. This research aims at analyzing mock politeness or sarcasm in the utterances of each character. The analysis focuses on describing the use of mock politeness in pragmatics context. The data was obtained from informal speech acts’ situations. The research carries out the descriptive qualitative method. The data was analyzed by using politeness strategy in examining the functions of mock politeness. The results show that sarcasm caused by the violation of pragmatic aspects in The Big Bang Theory releases in several types of utterances, they are: declarative, representative, and expressive. The function of sarcasm in this comedy situation mostly to create humors which are divided into several functions such as humor as a means of social critics, humor to satirize, and humor to mock.

Abstract

Tujuan dari kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini diantaranya adalah sebagai berikut: 1) meningkatkan kemampuan menulis memo bahasa Inggris guru-guru melalui penerapan pendekatan berbasis genre; 2) meningkatkan kemampuan pemahaman makna teks fungsional (memo) bahasa Inggris sesuai dengan konteks dan fungsi penggunaan sehari-hari; dan 3) memberikan pengalaman belajar yang baru kepada para guru yang dimana pada akhirnya dapat mentransfer pemahaman materi kepada siswa untuk meningkatkan motivasi siswa dalam mempelajari bahasa Inggris khususnya pembelajaran menulis (writing). Pelaksanaan kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini mengadopsi kerangka pemikiran dari Cope and Kalantzis (1993), yang mengklasifikasikan tahapan penulisan melalui pendekatan berbasis genre (Genre Based Approach) ke dalam tiga langkah pelaksanaan kegiatan, khususnya pada pembelajaran menulis (writing) antara lain: 1) modeling, 2) joint construction, dan 3) independent construction. Abstract

Tujuan dari kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini diantaranya adalah sebagai berikut: 1) Memotivasi guru untuk meningkatkan kemampuan dalam melakukan PTK, 2) Memberikan keterampilan langsung untuk melakukan dan melakukan PTK yang praktis, 3) Memberikan pemahaman pada guru akan kebermanfaatan PTK untuk meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran di sekolah, 4) Melatih para guru agar dapat membuat sendiri proposal PTK, 5) Mengenal Potensi Siswa yang dapat dikembangkan oleh guru untuk meningkatkan hasil belajar mata pelajarannya masing-masing. Pendekatan pelatihan ini secara individual dan klasikal. Metode yang digunakan adalah ceramah, latihan, dan evaluasi. Abstract

The present research aims at analyzing the English summative test at SMA Perguruan Rakyat 1 in the Second Term of 2018/2019 Academic Year. The analysis concerns to difficulty level and discriminating power to know the teacher-made test English summative test at SMA Perguruan Rakyat 1 whether or not the test has good items, especially of its difficulty level, discriminating power and the effectiveness of the distracters. Such research procedures are employed, such as observation, literature review and statistical analysis. Specifically, the result of the research is expected to be beneficial for educational practitioners to have a more-depth insight of English summative test analysis. Furthermore, the result of the research is also expected to give valuable knowledge for those who are interested in analyzing the English summative test writing, mainly to the indicators of its discriminating power and distracters. Lastly, it is also hoped to be as reference for further researchers to draw related concepts of English summative test analysis that is integrated with various disciplines implemented in the classroom contexts.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to analyze empirically English writing skill of Senior High School students. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The population of this research is the second grade students from SMA Yaspen Tugu Ibu in Depok. The sample was taken through simple random sampling of which 25 students as samples of this research. For collecting the data, the instruments used in this research were writing test and interview. The writing test was conducted to obtain the writing skill indicators, while the interview was carried out to elicit information of students’ problems in writing. The result of this research explained that students’ English writing skill was definitely good at SMA Yaspen Tugu Ibu Depok. There were 88% of students with scores more than 50 and only 12 % with scores less than 50. In conclusion, the students’ writing skill at SMA Yaspen Tugu Ibu is considered to be high category in English writing skill.

Abstract

The research aims at analyzing the socio-cultural semiotic that characterize the deixis in taglines. Such types of deixis are analyzed qualitatively by examining the socio-cultural functions using “Sign Mapping of Roland Barthes”. The analysis focuses in describing the signifier and signified as well as the meaning of denotative and connotative characterized the deixis in taglines of various advertisements. Findings have shown that the signifiers and signified concepts function to inform, to challenge, to emphasize, and to persuade, of the consumers as the addressee. The types of deixis occur into such types of pronominals deixis (she, you, I, me), nominal deixis (girl, age, the city), verbal (blow, drive, come, follow, let, change), adverbial (in her face, anywhere, Marlboro country, when you can fly), and grammatical deixis (imperative, statement, interrogative). The denotative meaning is reflected from the use of signifiers that serves the real of sense of the product referred to, i.e., the commercial product that is divided into categories, man’s category, woman’s category, and unmarked category. The connotative meaning relates to some cultural values, such as pleasure, masculinity, feminity, passion, luck, beauty, freedom, and the sense of belonging.Key words: Socio-cultural semiotic analysis, deixis, tagline

Abstract

Gamification is the comprehensive use of game features with the aim of improving student’s performance and motivation in learning. The purpose of this present research is to conduct a systematic review of previous relevant research using the Quizizz and Kahoot! in learning English during 2021. The research method employed a Literature Study through a search on the Google Scholar page. Synthesis of literature data was analyzed from various components of students’ needs in learning English using Quizziz and Kahoot! The results point out that the online learning application Quizizz and Kahoot! have various advantages for learning English, among others, increasing the students’ ability and motivation in participating in the process of learning English actively and communicatively.

Abstract

Learning vocabulary is the most fundamental aspects of learning for students in learning the language. In the process, the teacher is expected to be a good facilitator so that the vocabulary learning process can proceed smoothly. Creativity in learning vocabulary is absolutely necessary. Scavenger Hunt technique  was chosen as the solution of the saturation experienced by students in the process of learning English vocabulary. The purpose of this reseach is improving the mastery and understanding of the students' vocabulary appropriate with context and function of everyday use, through the application of Scavenger Hunt technique. Moreover, this teaching technique is also expected to add a new learning experience for students. The research was carried out in Gema Insani Indonesia Foundation by employing a classroom action research with two cycles of assessments. There were 18 third grade elementary school students as an object of the research. The data was collected by observation, note taking, and test. The findings showed an increase in the ability of  students’ mastery and understanding of the meaning of the vocabulary through the application of  Scavenger Hunt technique  that can be seen from the increase in student’s mean score on the second cycle with 82 that is considered as good predicate. Keywords: scavenger hunt, vocabulary, vocabulary learning

Abstract

Perilaku respon backchannel merupakan perilaku seorang penutur yang secara signifikan mempengaruhi keberhasilan komunikasi, terutama dalam konteks komunikasi lisan atau percakapan. Terjadinya perilaku verbal respon backchannel akan diikuti oleh perilaku non verbal respon backchannel. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi jenis dan fungsi verbalisasi backchannel serta perilaku verbal dan non-verbal respon backchannel siswa kelas XII SMK Atlas Cimanggis Depok. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode kualitatif deskriptif dengan sampel berupa 9 data rekaman video. Hasil analisis data menunjukan 7 jenis dan fungsi verbal respon backchannel dan 7 klasifikasi non-verbal respon backchannel. Berdasarkan analisis hasil penelitian dan pembahasan temuan data rekaman 9 video, diperoleh data sebanyak 50 perilaku verbal respon backchannel menurut jenis dan fungsinya. Berdasarkan jenisnya didominasi oleh jawaban singkat atau tunggal respon backchannel yaitu sebanyak 40 respon. Berdasarkan fungsinya terdapat 50 verbal respon backchannel yang didominasi oleh 13 fungsi klarifikasi. Berikutnya untuk data perilaku non verbal respon backchannel, analisis data yang diperoleh berdasarkan perilaku verbal respon backchannel adalah sebanyak 39 dimana data didominasi oleh adanya perilaku non verbal ekspresi wajah yaitu 15 dataANALISIS PERILAKU BACKCHANNEL DALAM LATIHAN PERCAKAPAN BAHASA INGGRIS SISWA KELAS XII SMK ATLAS CIMANGGIS DEPOK
